Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Took it to an Indy shop I havent used before but specializes in euro cars who said the noise was coming from the front passenger side of engine.
Leading evidence: 'Use before' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine vitals and post here' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but this good mechanic found the noise coming from the same place as the one back in March...and they "recommend taking the engine out"?

They rec take the engine out but also said it may be the tensioner of the timing chain, which could be changed without dropping the engine.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My advice... instead of taking a 20 second in the wheel well and with the camera in motion, take a 1-2 minute video with the engine deck lid open- 30 second on bank 1, 20 seconds on bank 2 and then underneath the car near the heads - 30 sec bank1 and 30 sec bank 2.
Upload to YouTube instead of an attachment.
Tell us about the car - MY, miles, service history etc. Do you have a Durametric to check engine vitals and post here?
Take the serpentine belt off and try that cold start. Only run it like this for 1-2 mins. If the noise is still present, its either:
1) loose spark plug
2) exhaust leak
3) piston slap
4) tensioner/tensioner pad/chain issue
5) catalytic converter
I guess its unlikely that a fuel injector is that loud, but it could be.
If the noise is gone with the belt off, then there might be something stuck on the belt that is hitting something on its way around. The period/frequency of the sound appears to be every other engine revolution or slower.
Probably a catalytic convertor, they make the same sound as a scored-bore....or it could really be a scored-bore..
I would suggest listening to the cats with a stethoscope one at a time....
Car is a 99. Took it to an Indy shop I havent used before but specializes in euro cars who said the noise was coming from the front passenger side of engine. I lost the mechanic I was using to retirement. I have another appt with a shop I saw recommended on some forums (apex autowerks in Clifton nj) and have their next available appt in 1 month.
i guess I will keep driving it. No engine codes. Goes away completely when engine warms up. Im hoping this other shop tells me something different than the first shop. They said maybe IMS but I am pretty sure they had no idea and dont do internal Porsche work. My 99 predates the ims issues.
full engine rebuild about 25k miles ago due to aos failure w 9xx motors in cali
99
You can read about it via a forum search here but the 99s are known to have a cold tick due to the slightly different nature of the Lokasil I plating that they had. But if yours has already had a rebuild then I presume the cylinders arent original?
update: took to a good mechanic, they have isolated the sound to the front passenger side of engine. Like you said, it is less than every turn of crankshaft... they estimated maybe 1 in 6 and increases with engine speed.
They rec take the engine out but also said it may be the tensioner of the timing chain, which could be changed without dropping the engine.
If the engine needs to be rebuilt I am not willing to take that on and will just drive it until failure.
Thoughts?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but this good mechanic found the noise coming from the same place as the one back in March...and they "recommend taking the engine out"? Based on what? And it "might be" a tensioner?
They have great reviews, so must know their stuff, but that sounds awfully vague.
I expect you will get better input than that on this forum, based on the collective knowledge of everyone here.
