Leading evidence: 'head is just cracked and can be repaired' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'head is just cracked and can be repaired' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair ." so you're going' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I posted a few weeks ago that I was having a overheating issue with my 99' c4. The car was running fine. I haven't driven it in a few weeks since the initial post, so I decided to have it towed to a Maryland shop (Autobahn Pro) who determined that there is antifreeze in the oil and as a result, I believe he said " the number "1" head is all likely warped. He suggested that I take it to the dealer for a second opinion, and thinks I may need a new/rebuilt engine costing approximately 4/5 thousand.
I need to make a decision soon, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Search for intermix and you'll find a few threads with good info. Most likely the head is just cracked and can be repaired. Replacement motors from the dealer I believe are going for $17k or more.
Good info from post 2 & 3, not so much from your former shop, these heads crack way before they warp. I will add to get all the oil out of the coolant system NOW as the oil eats the hoses it comes in contact with. Find a shop that knows how to do this properly with the right cleaner, it takes hours to do this properly but this is no time to skimp on the process. Pressure test coolant system at operating temp to locate leak,
Befuttled! Just found out from a dealer that there is a cracked cylinder wall, and I will need a new engine costing (15/17 grand) way more than I want to spend. The tech recommends new opposed to used. Needless to say, but I was hoping/praying for a different result. Now I will probably sell the car once repaired. Any rebuilt engines out there, please let me know...
Thanks
Sorry to hear... The dealer always says replace and not fix when it comes to trannies and engines. Probably should have tried another indy for the 2nd opinion.
Sorry, I didn't get a chance to call. I've been hyper busy this weekend.

Not the oil itself, but the coolant resovior.

Not a problem! You do present an interesting thought - who does one trust when it comes to auto repair?
I don't trust anyone but most if not all dealers perform no real internal engine work nor tranny work for whatever reason. I forget the MD shop I used to go to.
You wrote: "Now I will probably sell the car once repaired." So you're going to dump possibly 15k or more in repair then sell it for maybe 20-25k if you're lucky? Really? I would think it would make better financial sense to cut your losses and sell it for parts, no?
I'd really like to keep the car, however! Selling parts - I never thought about that, but it's a possibility. Will followup with Byprodriver regarding his sale. What's considered a "reasonable" price for a used/rebuilt engine?
Thanks again...
Actually, I don't know what cause the problem, but what I do know is one evening suddenly the car started overheating - I drove it home (approx 10 min.) and that was it. Do you have the 3.4 or 3.6? Email me at

with the specifics.
Thanks
If it's "just" a cracked head, are you sure you need a new motor? As was mentioned, Doug/Dharn55 had his cracked head repaired for ~$500 IICR, plus labor if you don't do it yourself.
