The 996 is a scalpel that can get in and out of space and through tight turns and can give many cars a run for their money on the straight, but is not the king.

It's in the latest issue of Christophorus -
http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessorie...e/latestissue/
- click "The 911 Generations" and you'll see that they're both listed as 5.2 seconds for 0-100 km/h...
you run 1/32?
(me = HO)
...and NO wise cracks!!
did you see the reaction time on that run yesterday.... 0.009 !! JEEZ those guys are dialed in to that light!
I mentioned the article because the 996 seems to be the Rodney Dangerfield of Porsche 911s. If you look in this month's Excellence magazine, there's this great photospread on the launch of the 991 at Porsche headquarters - and they have a line of 3 "modern" 911s - a 991, then a 997, then a 993? What the heck? And this is Porsche (the manufacturer) that did the display?
So yes, I was happy to see that the "official" Porsche magazine recognized that the 996 has the same ***** as the 997. You guys might say that you don't care, but for performance vehicles, the 0-60 time is the equivalent of cup size... ;-)
Don't forget to get the small skinny tires for the front. Just remember not to corner too fast with the car. It'll understeer like a bi***.
In all seriousness, I agree with Spender, 0-60 times are relevent whether we want to admit it or not. Would I like my car to retain it's driving dynamics and feel yet accelerate from 0-60 like a new Corvette Z06? Hell Yes!!!
yup...then that pesky Miata would finally be behind you
as for the OP statement, i agree its good they did this, and I like the 993 in the mix...remember who they are aiming the info at...potential buyers....
996 owners are not buyers because they are happy with the bargain they have already - why spend an additional $90+k for......headlights
OK "BMW guy" (and that sounds like a statement a BMW owner would make too, but I won't get into that) - no disrespect intended, but come on friend, this is a Porsche forum.
Anyway, even with my newly-discovered "hot" 0-60 time, thanks for the heads up not to take on an M3!
I have nothing to add other than my son said this weekend as we were washing the 996 before winter that we should call her "sally" because except for being red she looks like Lighting McQueen's gf.
Okay newbie. I'll be generous and not give you a slapping for that comment, but a true car enthusiast appreciates all sports cars for what they bring. I am lucky enough to own a E90 M3 and a 996. Both are phenomenal sports cars, but I'm smart enough to know that I have different tools for different jobs.
In some circumstances the M3 will slap the 996 seven ways from Sunday and leave it in a daze. It is a brute force wild hog that sets off running with a scream and knocks things out of the way. The 996 is a scalpel that can get in and out of space and through tight turns and can give many cars a run for their money on the straight, but is not the king. The M3 will always win in a straight line and through less challenging curves. Would I want to race a 996 through the Tail of the Dragon in an M3? Hell no, because there's too much weight and too high a center of gravity to throw back and forth through continuous switch backs and the small and nimble 996 would win.
I love both cars and pinch myself each time I walk into the garage. The only thing that would complete it for me is for me is a Lamborghini.
I use zeroto60times.com to compare stats and the '99 996 is listed as 4.9 seconds. My M3 is listed as 4.2 seconds. I can believe both numbers on a relative basis, although, both might be off by a tenth of a second or so.
Yeah, I know, gotta love their ***** - they would be less presumptuous if they had seen some of my more memorable slap downs.
If it had not been a long day already I would be more feisty, but I've had enough drama for the day, so I'll be nice.
Maybe I'm ashamed to own a car that gets more attention from women than the 996?
Thank you very much!
I don't get in here as often as I would like, as my "new" job keeps me either tied up with travel or long days dealing with business, but I am always here lurking in the background, even when I'm not commenting.
OK, first off, can't we all just get along?
No offense intended, just having fun with you dude! It's awesome that you own two hot cars.
Second, explain to me how someone can have as their avatar a still from a music video for a really cool indie band (they're called the Postal Service, but I can't remember the name of the song), but own a BMW?
Thirdly, thanks for the website for those 0-60 times - but it says that my car (a 2003 C4S) does it in 4.5 seconds? Seems like a bit of a stretch.
Finally, as a peace offering, here's my favourite picture of a beemer:
No offense taken. I knew you were having fun. I like the photo - although, I would kick the *** of any girly that stood on my rear bumper
Good catch on the avatar. It's actually is a screen cap from an Apple commercial that used their video - just because I drive cars driven by old men doesn't mean that I can't be hip, trendy and buy awesome toys.
I still have many years before I hit retirement age.
Now, as for the 0-60 times, yeah, I agree that they seem a little optimistic - not sure how they were determined, but it would seem that they were taken on dragstrips.
http://www.zeroto60times.com/
I think when you get down to those sorts of times the driver becomes the biggest variable in a fast time. I'm not sure that the average driver could hope to hit that kind of performance.
HELL, my Honda was faster than........ OK..... I'm thinking......... oh yeah, now I remember.............. one time I was next to an 18 wheeler flat bed truck, which was fully loaded with I-beams, and I beat him off the line and SMOKED him in the 1/4 mile! Yeah baby!
Later he passed me on the highway doing 65 MPH!
Maybe I'm ashamed to own a car that gets more attention from women than the 996?
[/QUOTE]
Have you been checking the protruding Adam's Apple on these fabulous admirers you speak of ?
Neither would be my first choice for a ToD run. I think the weight bias in the 996 and potential for lift throttle oversteer would make me a little more cautious in the 996 than I'd be in the M3. And, as far as M3s go, your e90 is a lightweight (literally and relatively speaking) in comparison with more recent versions which, while fast, are pretty fat cars (from a weight perspective).
They show the 0-60 times for my C4S and Volvo at 4.5sec and 5.4sec respectively but my butt says the Volvo is faster.
I hate to agree...but I do. Maybe it's just the difference between the cars. The 996 is deceptively fast.
Bimmer = BMW Car.
Beemer = BMW Motorcycle.
All you posted was a picture of a girl. There wasn't even a car or a motorcycle in the picture. Sheesh. lol
-Eric
I've done the ToD in the 996 and it was planted, nimble and fast. I don't think that the M3 would handle the switchbacks as well as the M3.
I'm not sure I understand you comment on the M3 - the E90 is the most recent version. E90 is the latest generation of the sedan. E92 is the latest version of the coupe.
Crikey, are there no sports car lovers left in this joint? A good 0-60 time means a car is quick, not that it's fast. When it's still accelerating past 100,
that's
fast.
And the first guy who says, "no replacement for displacement!", I'm gonna close his frunk lid using the hood ornament. Don't test me.
Hmm... fingers and brain not communicating.
I meant to say that I suspected the 996 would handle the switchbacks better than the M3.
- simple physics - less weight and a lower center of gravity make it easier to throw around the switchbacks.
It's the standard bench mark for assessing a car's capabilities, but as mentioned, there is so much more that defines a decent sports car, like steering feedback, power delivery, handling, braking etc., and although I've drunk from the Porsche fountain, I am very happy with the overall Porsche package and think as a marque, it is one of the best.
One of the things I've enjoyed most about Top Gear are the number of times a Porsche has been pitted against other marques with higher hp & lower 0-60 times -- but spanked them in elapsed times on a road course.
My two cents, which are generally worth less than a penny combined:
I own both a completely stock '04 C4S, and a lightly modified '07 335i sedan. (Granted, the Bimmer isn't an M3, but with its full compliment of M3 suspension, limited slip differential, recalibrated engine control, pulse width methanol injection, and larger intercooler, it is substantially "faster" than every stock E90x M3 it has ever met.)
However, when I want to go and drive for the joy of driving... I choose the 996 every time. I simply find it more fun, and for the kinds of driving I like to do, more capable too.
Make of it what you will. I think it's all about preference and driving experience, really.
When I was a kid a motorhead in the neighborhood had a bright green hemi challenger. This car could reach 60 sec. in four seconds flat. That beats my 997by a mile, yet my car is quicker. Any car besides another Porshe cannot beat it in any real world situation. The 0-60 is important but please people is that all there is? And personaly I don't think any M3 owners should be on this sight boasting about beating Porsche without some real world experience to back it up. You can find many cars that beat a Porsche 0-60 time but Porsche has been successful is bringing the 911 to the world with steady improvement over the years to a point where they rule the road, indominable.
Wayne,
It is AWESOME! I have gotten a few comlpiments from some guys at work saying that they heard me leaving the office in the evening and tell me that the car sounds great. And these are not Porsche guys!

Doh!! Serious brain fart on my end. For some reason I read "e90" as "e30". Yep, you've got the fat one. Nevermind. My bad. I need some sleep. It's been months since I've had a full night.
Btw, it's still a great car!
I'm surprised to hear you say that about the M3. Interesting. I've only done the ToD in my TT. It was putting out about 250hp but with AWD it felt extremely planted. Btw, talk about a fat car...still loved every bit of it though.
-Eric
I look forard to hearing it next time I see you. My wife makes the comment that she can hear me pulling into our neighborhood because of the distinctive sound of my exhaust.
No worries, easily done.
Right now I'm only operating on supposition, as I've only driven the ToD in my 996 and not the M3. If I get a chance I'll take the M3 out there next time.
My assumption is based on the experience of whipping the 996 around the hairpins on the NC to TN downhill stretch.... uphill from TN to NC would be pretty easy because you end up in 2nd gear for most of the turns.
You can qualify all you want. I don't have to like it and you can't shut me up dryballs. I hate BMW's they are in my humble opinion pieces of ****. As for being a newbie, my freind I hope your life opens up for you someday but for now I would be cautious. This is a bad time for you I know, but hang in there.
Any real world car, Christ! I thought I'd be preaching to the converted. You must all think BMW's are cool and Porsches are just ok , if so what the f are you doing stirring up trouble in a Porsche site? I'm just confused as to your problems. Why are you here dear?
You have a join date of July 2011. You ARE a newbie and obviously not educated on the relative merits of the M3 to the 996 - that makes you ignorant also - simple statements of fact.
We're sports car enthusiasts. We know the strengths and weaknesses of our cars. We love them, but we haven't drunk the coolaid and don't believe that they walk on water and are the best cars in the world. They are phenomenal cars, but an educated realist knows their limitations. We know where they excel and we know where other similar cars excel.
Newbie, if you're if here to troll, then you've picked the wrong forum and you'll meet some resistance and an receive some education.
That's a good point, however I'd bet Porsche would rather post Nring times and the like, unfortunately this info would go over the heads of most people. On the other hand, just about every performance car buyer is familiar with 0-60 times.
Well, that's the problem - track times are track, weather and driver dependent. Straight line 0-60 is easy.
I did think the same thing. I think Ben Choi might be back with a different name.
My dear welladmac. I believe you misunderstand my motives. I don't have an agenda like you do therefore we are on different levels of conscioucsness and understanding. I'm not saying anything to be mean. Really but it's so cute how you get all ruffeled like a dogs back(no disrepect, if you only knew how much I love dogs.) I don't have a clear understanding of trolling, Is that someone misrepresenting herself?
What the?!
I didn't say a word about BMWs in the context of your post. (I do enjoy them and have owned several, but that's beside the point. They're different cars, with different strengths that suit a different use case entirely, but that's beside the point.) What I find laughable is your generalization that the only car that can beat a Porsche is another Porsche.
The fact is that in capable hands a Honda can "beat" a Porsche in less capable hands, and there are a great number of "real world" cars that are faster and more capable than a 911.
I am a car nut. I presently own a 996 C4S. I love it. I have owned many cars and enjoyed them too. I do not believe that it or any 911 is "the best car in the world" but I do believe that 911s are among the best cars presently available to the middle class enthusiast.
The rest of your personally deleterious comments and poorly crafted sarcasms are out of place here, and do more to diminish your comments than they do the folks you aim them at.
-Michael
Agreed, although 0-60 times are also varied depending on surface and weather conditions(among other things), albeit to a much lesser extent.
I think the Nring has become the holy lands of performance car testing, hell even Caddy tests their high performance models there to record times.
I'd love to see the various manufacturers posts thier Nring times as often as they post their 0-60 times even if they are less than scientific. Of course this does not even take into account the blatant cheating that goes on with Nring testing by the manufacturers, can you say Nissan GT-R or ringer Ferraris? But again, I think posting these times would not be of much interest to the general car buying public, unfortunately.
Ignore him Michael, he's a trolling nut job. He has no credibility and clearly doesn't know his *** from his elbow, nevermind anything about cars. He probably is a wannabee Porsche owner that drives a Ricer Honda.
Yeah, super impressive. The new CTS-V sedan is only a few ticks slower than a Panamera Turbo around the Nring.
Then again the Caddy does have a detuned version of the ZR-1 engine. Not too shabby.
Porsche "can" simply post the track times under the 0-60 times people will catch on. I think that would help some choose which model P-Car they'd prefer to purchase from the Porsche line up.
Imagine seeing on the Porsche web site, "Porsche Test Track Time (PTTT):
Carrera 2 - PTTT - 9:15; 0-60 - 4.7s
Carrera C4 - PTTT - 9:05; 0-60 - 4.6s
Cayman S - PTTT - 8:59; 0-60 - 4.9s
Hmm which to buy? LOL!
0-60 times are cheated most times. You should see the faces of c6's owners when I beat them to 70 mainly because my engine is in the rear which aids in me never having traction problems whereas "they" have to rely on traction control and the perfect launch to get close to manufacturing and magazine times. (of course I'm not saying they don't zoom by shortly after 70).
I don't like to going after someone the way they really should be gotten after, but for you sir I may one day make an exeption. As for the present I'll leave you with the assurance that any medication I take is perfectly in order. You know, I deal with people like you everyday, they hear someone say something a little off, maybe a little radical and they freak. Will ya please get the f**k off it? Oh yeah and smile a little, your writing is sour and vengeful. There's no life in it. And you can't stop me from saying things to you and I'm not in the least bit intimdated by you.
You're so funny. I disputed facts without making it personal. You immediately made it insulting, personal and emotional - congratulations!
Facts always win, emotion just makes you look like a fool - you probably are, but I don't have the facts to assert that for sure. You're not even sport. If you don't have two brain cells to rub together in order to form a cohesive argument, then you're not worth the time or effort of most people around here.
No, I didn't. If you look at the posts I'm not angry in any of them. I'm not angry and you don't scare me. Oh, and by the way I feel you got really personal with me really quick and that shows me your hiding something or are afraid of something I'm not angry and I don't hate you I love you, but your so afraid of me you can't deal with it. Please don't try to hurt me or get rid of me because I'm not going anywhere and you just have to deal with me. My name is Jonathan C. Silva. Better Known as Johnny Rotten, My dear freind you can't yet be invited to the party. (edit) Sport? are you perhaps a brit?

You know, we've seen a continuing evolution on these forums as each new generation of Porsches comes out. The 993 owners thought that the 996 owners were douchbags and the 996 owners thought the same about the 997 owners.
Within a couple of years the douchbags get augmented with the enthusiasts, then the enthusiasts get augmented by the "wrenches", the "wrenches" get augmented by the Boy Racers. All of this correlates to the resale price of the cars.
Those of us that have been around for a while can smile as the new generation of owners roll through and just take pleasure in enjoying our cars.
That evolution has been fun to watch.
I like it here too. We have a core crew that makes it worthwhile to stay. Thankfully the douchebags come and go, mostly they don't stick around long.
I can't believe I scrolled through all of these pages of you two going after each other. Jeez. Agree to disagree and move on.
Krap like this really brings down the forum. Embarrassing.
I pay attention - sometimes....
mostly I read between the lines and make the posts more fitting to my liking....
for example this:
becomes this:
works for me
You guys still at it? I've been 145 mp (this car has gotten quicker over the years) and back and then drove to wait for like 5 kids to get their hair cut by my barber (had to wait like two hours for my turn). Did you guys drive Porsches today?
I did laundry....ran the kids around in the suburban, went to post office, get gas in the suburban (it takes like $1000 to fill) sorted thru bills and shredded paper, listen to Pandora, picked up around the house....
gawd,
I am a woman!!
Don't feel bad my X-GF and her 2 sons where at the barbershop today. She and I dated for 5 years after HS. Anyway her son attends the same HS she and I attended and he's in the marching band. As the older waits for his brother to get his hair cut he sits next to me. He asks, "why are you so quiet were you like this in HS". I say, "am I supposed to march up and down the barbershop yelling?". So I ask him how's the band doing and his percussion solo at the last game. Then he asks how I was in HS and what did I do? I said well I was a star athlete football/basketball and I did Chorus for a couple years. He looks at his mom and then looks back at me and says in a disappointing tone as if I were a looser, "Chorus, really"? Meanwhile, I'm thinking, "ahh you're in freakin marching band you little punk"!
It started before the 993 to 996 and it's already continuing on with the 991 that few have even driven. It's a shame we can't all get along with a common love for these *** engined machines, but it doesn't seem to be so. Personally I have yet to drive a 911 I didn't like (I've driven at least one example from each generation). Hopefully the 991 will be another good one.
I agree and I don't understand it. To me the only thing it comes down to is snobbery and an inferiority complex. The new guys look down on the old and the old guys are afraid of having old toys.
They're all great cars and there's no need for name calling. It's funny, I see no need to trade in my 996 for a newer car, as the difference in performance vs. the added cost is just not worth it to me.
Just a heads up on buddy
His 996 was totalled and he thought about an sc or other ac as replacement, then stumbled into that black beauty and bought it, who can blame him, nice car
Singing is so gay, just ask Bob Dylan
Why can't you get them to see past there own ***? Selfish lazy they can't take the time to find out about what makes things work better cause that's what their parents want them to do. So they go about smashing everything. It's really quite exiting when they get a hold of somthing like a Turbo Carrera.
One more thing I wanted to add. I was on meds to get me through it some tough stuff in my life lately and I resent your characterization of people that require such help.
I was in dowmtown boston looking for this place called the gypsy bar. It was a shlep and a park and a nothing. Then this beautiful brunette passed by just as I was leaving a stop sign and I gave it the gun a little. The look she gave me was the best sex I ever had.
Thanks! They look great, but they're a pain to clean, plus having new tires mounted is nerve wracking for fear of getting chips and dings in the finish.
I had new rear tires mounted a couple of months ago and the BMW dealer's tire mounting machine messed up the finish on one of the wheels - testament to the dealer, they replaced it with a brand new one within 48 hours.
I have to say that BMW dealers know how to do service - the warranty service is amazing and the non-warranty service is almost as good. No complaints there at all.
Paint - it's a dark grey paint + clear coat. I wish it were anodized, then I wouldn't stress about messing up the finish when the tires are changed.
I think the wheels themselves are one of the standard M wheel options for the M3.
I totally agree with this - and this was in part why I started this thread (which has really gone off topic and turned into a bit of a CF!)
It was always my impression that what made the Porsche community "different" is that it was more immune to the status-seeking drive that the owners of many other cars have. Porsche is really and truly a driver's car. (To wit, have you seen the size of the Mercedes and Audi "logos" on their latest models? They are the size of a midget's head - nothing subtle about them.) I did not mean to pick on Wellardmac for his BMW (which is very nice in the picture - I love that color) - but it has to be admitted that a lot of ponces/****** seem to pick a BMW as their car as they can buy a base model 3 series for less than a Honda Accord - and then drive around like they're hot stuff (but I am explicitly excluding Wellardmac from this characterization - an M3 is a cool car). I've just never seen this kind of attitude from a Porsche driver. But I digress.
When I decided last year that I wanted to get a Porsche 911 as my DD, it was between the 996 and the 997. Ultimately, I decided to get the 996 because it literally cost me half as much as getting a 997 -
for probably 95% of the same driving experience
. And yes, the 997 has improvements in many areas, and is beautiful car - my next 911 will likely be a 997 - but I love my 996, and am glad I got it. Best bargain of my life.
Spender, you're exactly right - even in your characterization of BMW drivers - generally they're only buying into the brand like a bunch of snobbish lemmings. I have never been a huge fan of BMWs for that reason.
I bought into the M3 because it's a truly exceptional sport car and I wanted a high performance daily driver. Thankfully the M drivers I've met have been a great crew of sports car enthusiasts and to be honest that's all that matters to me - I like to hang out with people that are not pretentious and just enjoy the experience of a good sports car. I have little patience for mindless brand religion.
I think ole Johnny Rotten is sleeping off a long nite after reading the posts spanning 2am thru 7am this morning.......looks like the meds finally did kicked in.
Cutting to what's really important, tell us about the boat. Looks like a pilothouse sailboat with no masts -- but seems to have a bow thruster. What is it?
you don't think some of the stuff I was trying to get this english gasbag to see was any more important than your laundry?
I've been talking to you guys for a couple weeks thought I was fairly well known around then this clown comes around calling me a newbie and a lyer and the only one that to help me out was ivengene. Don't worry about your laundry. The only thing I could do is show him for hours what a jerk he was being I'm not doing this to be mean I was hurt and had my priorities wrong and all I could do was hope something or someone would come along to make it better. I spent so much time defending myself not because he was attacking me it's that he was lying about stuff that might really hurt me. We have to call it people. When somthing is messed up it's our job. No one is going to do it for us.
It's a Bill Cooke design, built by Lyman Morse in Maine about ten years ago. She's about 55'. She's a motorsailer. She was Wrecked in Ireland the first or second year and was repaired and painted by us. She was refinished again a year or so ago. (it does have a bow thruster you can see the water churning as it's engaged.)
Poor little baby had his feelings hurt!
I never called you a liar. I simply called you out for being a deluded newbie (you are) who stated that the only thing on the road that could beat a porsche was another porsche (you did) - just quoting back your own words my friend. Stop being a big girl and get over it.
I just love how you tried turning this around on me.... "lying about stuff that might hurt someone"
Gotta love it! I think it's time you headed to my ignore list.
here ya go:

Very nice! Back on topic.. I put 500 miles on the car this past Saturday and kept up with all the "faster cars" in my old POS.
https://rennlist.com/forums/9038619-post39.html
I knew this the day they posted up the 0-60 times for the 997. They went from stating a 0-100 km (0-62) time to using the 0-60 time so that it would market it looking like it was faster, when it simply wasn't. The S is slightly faster but not really any faster then a 996 with x51.
Actually, Porsches speak metric as their first language... 0-62 mph is almost exactly 0-100 kmh, which makes it a better comparable for the rest (read: overwhelming majority) of the world that uses the metric system.
When they introduced the 997.1 they changed from metric to imperial. While the 996 C4S and Turbo models that were still available were using metric. I just know since I live in a part of the world that does use metric.
Phew - that's 45 minutes of my life I'll never get back.
Gotta chime in now that I'm invested.
1) Drove a 997.1 normal back to back against my 996.2 at the start of this year. Felt like the same car except the console in the 997 hurt my knee. Console delete in my 996 makes it a better car.
2) I think the raging medicated noob guy took offense because his 997 was called out being too slow but he won't admit it. It's a pretty car though...you got that going for you.
3) Drove an E46 M3 a few moths ago. I really liked it even though the SMG was f*&^%ing horrible. I'll bet the E90 is fantastic. Straight up manual?
4) Can't say I like the headlight covers on you 996 WellHard...but I love the Carrara white.
Errr - you missed my point. For one thing, any Porsche sold in Canada has to have metric primary speedometer and odometer - it is mandatory. If you have seen a 997 that has an imperial cluster, it is a US import. Secondly, Porsche is produced in a country that has been metric for longer than Canada - Germany went metric something like 100 years before us (just looked it up - DE went metric in 1872!)
I'm so sorry, I would have advised against it.
I would agree.
The E90 is a beast - blazingly fast - surprising for such a big and heavy car. I just wonder what they could do if they put the car on a diet. I have the manual, as I didn't want to mess with any of more complicated transmissions... more stuff to break.
As for the headlight covers - The previous owner installed them. I doubt I would have put them on myself, but I don't dislike them either, so there's no reason for me to pull them off.
