Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Interesting that LNE appears to be using a metal retainer.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Groovzilla looks like you did some great preventive mnt. on your new Porsche. I think that was a great move to go ahead and fix it right rather than go with the IMSG install. Just sucks you to pay so much to fix a Porsche defect. Good job on the photos. Nice looking 996.
KrazyK: porsche ownership is much less of a challenge than a mercedes. i'm surprised i don't here more mercedes stories considering there must be a significant amount of mercedes owners in this forum.
As a previous and current M-B owner and professed Porschephile (currently on my 4th 911 Carrera), I agree that "fine German engineering" carries a price, both initially and on-going. All of that complexity must be attended to in the form of higher preventive mntce. costs and higher repair & replacement costs.
The real question is...is it worth it? Well, it is to me. As my father so famously said when I showed up with my first "exotic" car, "Look at the experience like that of having a mistress...high maintenance, troublesome, and worth every minute!" (I think he was joking...I think.)

I struggle in my mind to understand why no engineers in Germany have never upgraded the bearing on our cars?.
I'm not talking about OEM I mean after market.
The Germans have fine engineers and it just puzzles me.
I have owned plenty of German cars, that good extras have been machined for and commonly from Germany and yet this massive iconic car and nothing?.
funny...theres always been a host of issues with almost every model porsche...the early 356 cars and early 911's from the 60's and early 70's seem to be the best for lack of issues.
75-77 911s: headstud problems, chain tensioner
79-83 911sc: headstud problems, transmission syncro problems, chain tensioner
84-87 carerra 911: valve guide issues
90-91 964: tremendous oil leaks from lack of case seal - split case to repair
95-98 993: SAI clogging causing CEL - won't pass emissions w/o major surgery
Awesome!
That list should be the automatic answer to every IMS/RMS whine followed by this:
It's a known problem and there is a relatively inexpensive fix (for a Porsche that is). Update the bearing and/or install the Guardian and then shut the hell up and drive your Porsche hard... Or just go buy a Honda.
the old bearing looked good. the oil and filter had 2000 miles on it when it went on the hoist this week for the repairs. the oil was drained and inspected as well as the filter taken apart and inspected by doug the service tech at AKERS. everything looked good and clean.
**because the original bearing can be a ticking time bomb, upgrading to the newly designed ceramic bearing feels like a good insurance poilcy especially since my thoughts were/are to sell the car this winter/spring for a lower mileage example. the more i drive it the more i think i'll keep it.
....leaving in about 20 minutes to take my wife out for her first spin in the car. downtown seattle christmas lights are really beautiful!...so are the vodka pours!
I wish your shop was not so far for me.....there is a shop in Tacoma that is a sponsor for our PCA chapter I have talked to, Im going to call them this week for a price for the replacement
Your comment about the 993s is inaccurate. A clogged SAI passage on a 95 OBD-1 993 will not trigger a CEL. In fact, many 95 owners simply delete the whole SAI system. Also those with 96-98 cars can either clear the SAI passages manually or there is an electronic fix for clogged passages. Either way, the car can pass emissions w/o major surgery.
ummmm...i don't think my statement is inaccurate...i've owned a 95 and 96 and yes a 95 will pass emissions but it will trigger the CEL. i guess duct tape over the CEL light on the dash remedies the problem.
all anyone has to do is search SAI and the numerous posts/thread will shed light on the subject...
i also forgot to mention the 993 steering rack issue, cam cover oil leaks, and a host of other leaks that are common with the 993 model.
the 993 in my eyes is the most beautiful model porsche has made other than the 356.
Repsectfully disagree. The OBD-1 system in the 95 993s does not monitor the SAI. Accordingly, one can delete the entire SAI system and seal the ports with no CEL - I speak from personal experience.
I'd encourage you to research the SAI as your information is not current for OBD-II 96-98 cars. The SAI ports can be cleared with some effort. In the alternative, there is an electronic fix for the issue (there's sticky at the top of the 993 forum).
I agree with your statement regarding the beauty of the 993
