I installed a 997 shifter in my 2000 996 Cab today. I was looking for a smoother, more precise shift with a little less throw. I got what I was looking for. The 997 shifter feels smoother and the shifts feel more precise. Could be that the 997 shifter is new, while the 996 shifter had 75k miles on it, but I like it. A little shorter throw, but nothing dramatic. Overall, I am quite happy with this upgrade. Here are side by side photos. 1. 1st gear 996 and 997 2. 2nd gear 996 and 997 3. I've got one sitting in my garage waiting to be installed. I just need to find a few free hours on the weekend to put it in. Was it as straight forward as other people say it is?

I live in the UK and have a 2004 C4S and having read about this online i was thinking about this upgrade for my 996. Does any 997 manual shifter fit the manual 996 or only certain shifters?. How much does the 997 shifter cost and id also like to know a) how difficult is it to install and b) does the aluminium shift **** as shown in these pictures fit straight on to the 997 shift lever?. Thanks Carl

The 997 shifter is a direct drop-in replacement for the 996 shifter. No mods required. The same shift ***** as for the 996 fit on the 997. Installation is simple. Remove center console, disconnect linkage and 4 bolts, install the 997 shifter. Use the B&M short shifter installations instructions (downloadable PDF) as a guide. Install time around 1 hour. I think Pelican Parts sells the 997 shifter for $199.
