I assume it works; it was disconnected but still in place when I bought my 996.

Hmm, I've thought about installing the GT3 console delete, except the PO installed a double-din Kenwood and moved the climate controls.

I installed a Kenwood with the adapter, redid the wiring for a new amp, all wires properly isolated, etc.

I used Crutchfield to get my items for the double din install and they were fantastic.

I had an issue a couple of years ago where it stopped connecting, but I just cleared it from my phone, reset the unit, and went through the discover procedure again.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I installed a Kenwood with the adapter, redid the wiring for a new amp, all wires properly isolated, etc. My radio reception (especially AM) has never been the same. I enjoy much better sound now but that stock head unit was better for AM/FM if that interests you in any way.
I have a 2003 996 and as such, this wouldn't work for me. I did get the following for the cigarette lighter:

Plays my usb with hundreds of songs, Bluetooth to my iphone, plays music from there. I was very surprised by how clear the sound was and no installation.
Interesting option. If you are using the preamp outs into the factory Hifi option amp (or an aftermarket amp for that matter), I'm not sure a new head unit will improve the sound quality over the original Becker . I've never been a fan of the sound of Becker and Blaupunkt radios audio quality with their built-in amps, but it's kind of hard to screw up a preamp out signal. If Becker preamp sound quality is the same, then I'd much prefer retaining the Becker with Bluetooth over swapping it out.
Great observation. Even on higher end audio (home and auto), all of the AM/FM tuners in newer equipment is terrible compared to the older stuff. They either forgot how to make tuners or just are too cheap to do quality tuners anymore.
Another option for you, I have this installed in my 03 996.

Hmm, I've thought about installing the GT3 console delete, except the PO installed a double-din Kenwood and moved the climate controls.
I enjoy having bluetooth capability when I do listen to the radio and not my engine.
The Bose sound is great, but AM/FM reception is horrible with the Kenwood.
I might remove the Kenwood and install the factory radio that came with my car and see if the reception is better or not.
Then if I'm happy, I'll consider picking up a Rennkit.
I've had mine for a few years and it's still going strong. Their customer service is responsive. I had an issue a couple of years ago where it stopped connecting, but I just cleared it from my phone, reset the unit, and went through the discover procedure again. It's been fine since.
I replaced it with a line in for $5.00.
Fool me once...
Mine stopped connecting and wouldn't reconnect unless I did a factory reset with the DIP switches. A little inconvenient.
Our Rennkit BTR-2 is really just for those that want to keep the
stock OEM Porsche radio
in the car - with the Bluetooth for streaming and calling. It does not work like other options that either run down due to dead battery or connect to an FM frequency. The BTR-2 is "always on" whenever the key is "ON", but still has a battery backup (key to "OFF"). This option is for all pre-2003 996 variants (MK-I and MK-II). Any other questions, please reach out.
I use a plug in adapter to the cigarette lighter, which as Rennline mentions can drain my battery if I forget and leave it in. I am contemplating something like what they offer, but for some reason losing the CD player bugs me. Dumb, I know.
Doh, I missed the "Remote CD player becomes inoperable" part.
My CD Changer is removed, but I thought I might re-install it when I reinstalled the factory radio.
I assume it works; it was disconnected but still in place when I bought my 996.
I'm wondering if uninstalling the Kenwood double-din, reinstalling the factory radio, moving the AC controls, removing the console, buying and installing the GT3 console delete, coming up with a new cellphone holder option, and adding Bluetooth is worth all the effort.
I could spend that time installing my rollbar, or a Momo steering wheel, or Aerokit side skirts.
I think I'll put the radio work on the back burner for now.
