Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Replaced my 115k original motor mounts today with Rein mounts. All went well except I broke the head of the most forward bolt on the passenger side. Its like 1/8 down in the hole. I went ahead and bolted the new motor mount in with only the rear of the 2 bolts in place. How terrible is this to drive. The weight of the engine pulls the motor downwards and I didnt think there was really any rotational force on the bolts. I will leave it to a professional to remove , but can I drive it around town and to work? Thank you in advance.

POST 2Original post

The main bolt that holds the engine has a square head that fits a square cutout in the engine carrier and that would prevent rotation. It is probably OK with two of the three. I'd just keep an eye on it until you get it fixed. How did the head break off? I'm guessing the old one was rusted in place? The torque for the new one is only ~18nm. If the old one was stuck that bad, how did you get the main bolt off?!

I think I understand what youre saying, but the main bolt is part of the mount it does not get removed. Its 2 bolts on top and 1 nut underneath that are removed. Yes the top motor mount bolt definitely appeared to have rust on the threads from what I could see that broke off. The nut underneath is 60lbs of torque and required a break bar. Definitely gonna get it fixed, just trying to determine if this is an immediate fix or can wait just a bit with only regular driving.

POST 4Original post

It's fine to drive but like said above fix it when you can. I think the main purpose of those bolts are to prevent the mount from moving vertically. If you look at the engine bracket with the mounts bolted to it as a single unit you've got 3 out of 4 bolts in place and they don't have anything to do with holding the engine up.

My mistake. Only 2 bolts up top. I thought there were three and I should have known because I replaced mine. You have one holding it in place and one broken. I think you should be fine as long as you stay off the track until you get it fixed.

POST 6Original post

I wouldnt drive any way other than gingerly until its fixed, and only if you must.

Mike, I am definitely not disagreeing with you (its definitely getting fixed), but help me out whats your thinking. The mounts do not turn experience rotational force side to side and the massive weight of the engine pulls the mount down into the square fitting. Does the engine go upwards at times? 3 of the four bolts are in place plus the 2 nuts below. I am not being smart *** or questioning just picking your brain as so many of yall have excellent car knowledge and experience. Thanks for the feedback.

You aren't being a smart *** and your thinking is correct. The weight of the engine and the holes in the chassis the mounts slide down into keep the engine in place.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 19412203

Wait, there are 4 bolts on each side and you have 3? I thought there were 3 bolts on each side and you have two.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 19412203

Kinda, yes, only one side though, since its a torque/twisting force. The engine can make upwards of 240 ft. lbs of torque about its axis at the crank, so one side will press down into the chassis and other side wants to come and lift up. I guess there is also an anti-twisting force if one drops the clutch or realizes the clutch so that it jerks and snaps back, especially in lower gears, so that would be the other mount, but with motor mounts, its usually one side that takes the brunt of the load. Your transmission and its mount will also help secure the motor, but its going to be much harder on that mount if one of your other motor mounts isnt doing its job because the twisting force is so close to the rotational axis.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19412649

Well since it's the passenger side the rotational force is already pushing down on that mount so that's better. Replace the bolt when you can. The mounts are doing their job. Those bolts do a minimal amount of work.
