Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have put about 2k miles on the car and have not heard this noise before today. It is also only the second time I have driven with the top up so the noise may be more pronounced. I took a spirited right turn and was accelerating hard when I heard the noise. I thought maybe it was just the PSM kicking in and dragging a break. I then made a slow left turn with no noise. Then made another left under moderate acceleration but not nearly enough that the PSM should engage. The grinding/scraping sound came back.

POST 3Original post

If a ball joint is loose/failing on the lower control arm, it can allow the knuckle to travel enough that the control arm will push the splash shield into the brake rotor and cause a scraping noise. This will only happen while turning one direction on each side. Right turns will make the left side scrape, left turns will make the right side scrape. In any event it's worth checking to see if the splash shields are rubbing the rotors. They can get bent pretty easily and then when things flex a little during turning they can scrape the rotor. Not a big deal, just bend them back away from the rotor slightly. Also check wheel bearings as 808Bill said. Jack the corner up and spin the wheel by hand to feel for roughness, and rock the wheel in and out at 12 and 6 to feel for play.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A little more info. The last drive before hearing the noise I got caught in some heavy thunderstorms. I had ordered an OBD II previous to the incident and the reader came today. I decided to check out the reader performance and see if the noise was still there. I did some lively driving to test the 0-60, HP, and lateral Gs. The sound was gone.... I tried PSM on and off with no difference. Could something have just got water where it should not have been?

POST 5Original post

Rotors can rust pretty quickly when wet. If your car sat in the rain, then it could make some grinding noises the first few miles before the rust gets knocked off the rotors. You'd probably have heard that before though, it happens all the time in all cars.
