Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

PO replaced the IMS bearing (LN Engineering) and clutch last January.
Leading evidence: 'Replace ims bearing (ln engineering) and clutch last january' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'brakes or the secondary air injection pump' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check belt' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
As I understand it, OP hears the sound when under hard acceleration, but not at other times, which doesn't make me suspect brakes or the secondary air injection pump.

The serpentine belt would have more of a reddish hue if the issue was kitten-related...

Suggestion
I would check the belt first, then for a stone chip trapped on the rotor of one of the wheels.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently got a 99 996 and every now and then I hear a screeching sound when I accelerate from standing still. It's not constant and sometimes it's louder and longer than other times. It's not there most of the time.
The best way to describe the sound is: The sound of a chair being dragged across the floor
Any idea what this could be? The car has manual trans and 106K miles. PO replaced the IMS bearing (LN Engineering) and clutch last January.
I'm not too worried about it, but it's not a nice sound.
Thanks
Is there a cloud of smoke and the smell of burning rubber to accompany this sudden burst of acceleration?
I have noticed this issue with both my 996 and my Corvette.
Seriously, though... check the tension on your serpentine belt and look to see if the underside is glazed.
Is your clutch involved when this sound happens, or does it happen regardless of whether or not you are applying pressure to the clutch pedal?
hehe no this is only regular street accelration. its from complete stop. like red lights, pulling out of parking spots etc. so the clutch is always engaged when it happens.
I'll check the belt.
It could be a brake or brake pad. I had a slightly bent flange on the inside of the front disk that was too close to the disk and if a small stone dropped in there, I had a scheech sound as well.
Let us know what you find is the cause.

I would check the belt first, then for a stone chip trapped on the rotor of one of the wheels. I got one trapped between a back disc and pad. It sounded like a squealing pig lol. Take a photo of the belt position so you know how it goes back on. Easy job. How are your engine mounts? Sagging mounts could possibly cause accelerating problems and/or unwanted sounds. Just a thought. .
Im going to replace the belt anyway as it's old and the PO doesn't know when it was changed last.
And I'll probably change the rollers/idlers too. The top one there does look a little tired doesn't it?
As I understand it, OP hears the sound when under hard acceleration, but not at other times, which doesn't make me suspect brakes or the secondary air injection pump.
Not hard acceleration, just normal. I've heard it when pulling out of a parking spot. And I'm not peeling away or anything. Just regular start from a full stop.
And it stops once you're at speed?
Maybe I spoke too soon. I can imagine a scenario where a sticky caliper could cause such a condition.
Since the belt's cheap, I'd replace it if it's even close to time for a new one as the first diagnostic step... if that doesn't work, I'd employ a friend to help identify where the sound's coming from.
The sounds comes and goes. But I had my brother sitting in the car this past week and it sounds like the sound is coming from the rear and more specifically from the rear wheels... Possibly the calipers sticking?
The sound tends to come when the car is warm, but it's very random. And trying to recreate it is very hard.
Old thread, but I'm having the same issue.
Did the belt replacement fix it? Mine sounds like it's coming from the front right wheel but maybe my ears are messed up. It sounds the same as you describe, and although it could be the belt it feels more likely to be calipers. It's not a real belt howl.
I have a similar sound on my 2003 C4S. I can actually make it happen at will and not at will. I'm fairly certain it's something to do with the clutch right as it starts to grab.
If I sort of launch the car ( I never really launch the car but a somewhat instant start) with very little throttle but lot's of clutch bite then I hear the screech for about a half second. If I give it normal revs and ever so slightly ride the clutch and pull off the line slowly then no screech. I don't think it's anything bad with the clutch though.
