Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have put about 500 miles on the car since purchase. Car is excellent, no issues. Changed oil tonight, had my oil sample kit handy so will send that in. Honestly I have never really paid much attention to the oil coming out of other cars I have owned. The IMS issue on this car of course has me paranoid. I noticed that after the oil had drained into my catch pan there was a slight amount of sediment, some sparkles. I then cut the filter open, and it looked perfectly clear. I let the sump drain with the car on a slight angle. Inside the plastic filter housing nothing but clear oil. Anyone else have similar experience?

POST 3Original post

A clean filter is a good sign. I wouldn't worry about the sparkles, that's fairly normal. The Oil Analysis will give you a lot more insight though. Just search this forum for "Blackstone" and post your results there. You can usually get some good feedback and its always good to see what other reports look like.

POST 4Original post

You need a magnetic drain plug to collect any particles

POST 6Original post

it looks fine, don't worry about it. I agree with the magnetic drain plug suggestion, for $24 bucks why not.

KKitis... He said he just bought the car. Prob the first thing I'd do too.

POST 12Original post

He didn't say that the oil had 500 miles on it, he said HE had driven the car 500 miles since purchase. Always nice to start establishing a service history if there isn't one with the car.

POST 15Original post

I actually have a helpful answer, maybe got the first time ever. And the answer is, it depends. If it was 590 miles since your last oil change, you need to get it looked at. If was 5000+ miles, it is normal. I always had a little on my drain plug and compared to pics on line and it was normal. If it was 10,000 miles then you are in great shape. So get a magnetic drain plug and change the oil in 1000 miles and inspect.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for the replies. I am unsure of how many miles on the oil, so changed to establish a baseline. I did install a magnetic drain plug. Car seems very well sorted, but no real history came with it. Sending oil out to blackstone on Monday.

POST 17Original post

Given how free of any debris the filter element was I can't help but wonder if the sparkles in the oil was from previous use of the drain pan. IOWs, the sparkles/metal debris was from a previous oil change of another engine? If you want to examine the oil drained from the engine, from the oil filter housing, you must use a very very clean drain pan. Clean enough a white paper towel wiped around in the pan comes out free of any oil or particles. Frankly, when I change the oil in my cars I don't bother to look at the drained oil. It just drains into a special catch pan that is a large flat jug that catches the oil that I can seal up and then which makes for easy transport. However I have a much smaller drain pan that I clean out with some aerosol non-residue cleaner -- brake cleaner can be used -- before use and dump the oil filter housing oil and filter element into this pan. This way if I see anything in the oil I know it came from the engine I'm currently servicing.
