Suggestion

If this was your current engine, I'd say make a proactive plan - run a better oil like Driven DT40 with higher levels of ZDDP and Moly to keep the problem at bay until you have the cylinders resleeved, but since you're looking to purchase this engine, then move on.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had a car scoped yesterday that I'm considering purchasing that has a 3.6x51 engine with ~35k miles. There is some light scoring on 1,2,3, and 5 from what I can see. The worst looks like cylinder 2. With cylinders 3 and 4, I'm not sure if that's light scoring or normal wear and streaks. The filter and sump looked alright, nothing too large in there. The oil was too fresh for an analysis so I held off on that. What are your thoughts on how these look? I'm not sure if some of those I called out were scoring or normal wear. My thought is this is, this car could be okay at the right price. To contain the issue I'd follow the literature out there on slowing further scoring, find the root cause and budget for a rebuild later.

POST 2Original post

Cylinder 4-6 is where the scoring always take place and these cylinder walls look just fine to me. There is that one scratch on cylinder 2 that is odd though. All in all I'd say you could do much worse, but it's not totally clean either.

My thoughts are this... Find another car. You're only seeing a small portion of the cylinder. I'm almost positive the scoring is worse at the bottom of the cylinder. And... I'm sure the Ferroprint skirt material has started to flake off the pistons. IMHO, this is beyond the beginning stage of the problem. If this was your current engine, I'd say make a proactive plan - run a better oil like Driven DT40 with higher levels of ZDDP and Moly to keep the problem at bay until you have the cylinders resleeved, but since you're looking to purchase this engine, then move on. This problem won't cure itself.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car was scoped through the sump and there wasn't anything bad in the bottom of the sump. Good call on considering about the flaking.

POST 5Original post

Agree with what was said above. Were this your car, I'd tell you it really isn't that bad and you can probably get several years of good use out of it. In this case, you have the option not to buy what's going to be an expensive problem one day or another. I'd take that option and buy something else. Unless you can get it at a price which factors in at least 50% of the cost of a future rebuild (i.e. 15 grand below market).
