I've just bought the quite frankly magnificent TopGear units to reinstate my factory equipped PSE 996.1 which had aftermarket static silencers fitted when I bought it.

I'm also running the same TopGear valved mufflers, but I wired them up to the 996.2 PSE switch with a custom latching relay board.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm trying to find out from first hand owner experience what the operational behavior protocol is for the automated (non-switchable) factory 996.1. I understand how the system works mechanically, but can't find any definitive information on how it responds to different conditions within the automated programing. For example, is it one or off, or does it respond linearly to throttle input and speed? Is it speed and or revs dependent, if so, what speed and revs and is this irrespective of throttle position? Etc, etc. Just need to know it's operational profile and parameters with specifics, rather than the generic 'speed and revs dependent' ambiguity that most searches seem to deliver. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

To my knowledge, it closes the valve around 50km/h and the valve is open below and above that speed, irrespective of engine load, revs, etc. I don't know the exact speed thresholds but expect it to be no more than 3 or 4 km/h below and above 50km/h.

POST 3Original post

From the technical service bulletin for installing PSE: The valves do not open slowly, they are open or closed. Here are the technical documents from Porsche for .1 and .2:

POST 4Original post

From my understanding (I researched PSE quite a bit to retrofit my own), the default function is that the valves are open all the time (louder) _except_ between 28-42mph (closed/quiet)... and this was done to eliminate loudness/droning at lower speeds in residential areas (supposedly). It's a common hack for OEM PSE owners to modify the PSE relay to remove this speed-based closing of the valves.
