So I decided to spend two months (only worked on it a few evenings every week) to touch up the paint, wet sand the entire car, fix all the clear coat damage, ceramic coat it and deep clean the interior.

I lightly sanded the area without disturbing the base coat to make sure the edges are flat with the rest of the area and then used my spray gun and professional grade clear coat to clear coat the area.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I purchased an early (March 98 built) Guards Read 996 back in June off of Bring a Trailer ( https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...mpaign_7715855 ). I posted about it in the early-996 thread here back in June after I bought the car. The car arrived in San Antonio in early July and while it was in great shape overall, the paint on it was terrible. It looked like it was washed with the rough side of a dish sponge for the better part of its life. It also had some clear coat damage; I did see some clear coat damage on the rear bumper on the original ad but both side mirrors had clear coat damage too. The car also had some deep scratches and large chips in some areas. So I decided to spend two months (only worked on it a few evenings every week) to touch up the paint, wet sand the entire car, fix all the clear coat damage, ceramic coat it and deep clean the interior. I also had the IMS Solution installed and now I can finally enjoy her the way she was meant to be enjoyed. The day the car arrived, you can see some of the deep scratches and chips in the second and third image: Started taping everything off to wet sand and polish: Here is a closeup of what the before and after looked like. I didn't get to the small area just under the weather stripping yet but everything else below has been wet sanded and polished. The dull finish just below the weather stripping is how the entire car looked prior to wet sanding. Before and after shots of the clear coat repair: Car after two months of wet sanding and polishing: Also took care of the wiper arms that were completely faded by giving them a new coat of paint: Also installed a new accordion wall on the rear wing as the old one was torn and installed a new "Carrera" decal. Leatherique treatment on the seats, first image is of the conditioner dwelling for a few days while the second image is of the final result (factory fresh). In the next few months I plan on rehabbing the entire suspension, install a 997 GT3 shifter and just enjoy the car.

POST 2Original post

Curiouswas the paint condition disclosed in the auction?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not specifically, I don't blame any party though as this is the risk one takes with buying a car sight unseen out of state. Even though the defects were not called out, there were some auction pictures that showed them if one looked closely and I knew I could rehab the paint. I'm also aware that any 26 year old red paint will need some attention at one point or another. The car had all the specs I was looking for, early build, sport seats, M030 suspension and the differential.

POST 4Original post

Really nice work. Do you think if you had seen the car in person prior to the auction end, would you still have bought it for the same price? When you buy a car sight unseen in person, you never know what you'll get. You sure made lemonade out of lemons!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, I probably would have haggled a bit but would have still bought it as the service history looked good and the interior was in great shape for its age. I honestly enjoy the process of bringing back paint, it's relaxing to spend an hour or so in the grace every night...much better than watching TV.

POST 6Original post

How do you bring deteriorated clear coat back to life? I'm genuinely curious as I have similar spots on my '99 despite years of meticulous care. I thought that once the clear is gone, it's gone forever unless you do a full repaint.

Areas with actual clear coat damage such as the side mirrors needed new clear coat. I lightly sanded the area without disturbing the base coat to make sure the edges are flat with the rest of the area and then used my spray gun and professional grade clear coat to clear coat the area.
