Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Some other parts damage besides camshaft but they say the L&N IMS bearing that was replaced in 2014 still looks good.

Porsche dealership has not yet completely disassembled engine to check for other damage but believes there shouldn't be additional significant amount of damage to pistons, etc.
Leading evidence: 'Replace some other parts damage besides camshaft' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check other damage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You may need to obtain a good used head for remanufacture on the side with the camshaft damage.

I am caught between walking away with losing a big chunk of change having to pay off the net value of the vehicle (the dealership has been working with me significantly on repair costs) or to risk throwing more good money at potentially bad money.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just bought a used 2001 996 manual that now has a damaged camshaft with worn teeth and metal particulate in oil pan, oil filter and other engine parts. Some other parts damage besides camshaft but they say the L&N IMS bearing that was replaced in 2014 still looks good. Porsche dealership has not yet completely disassembled engine to check for other damage but believes there shouldn't be additional significant amount of damage to pistons, etc. Vehicle lost power quickly while driving and had to pull to side of road with subsequent tow. Worn teeth on camshaft did not allow it to rotate.
I am caught between walking away with losing a big chunk of change having to pay off the net value of the vehicle (the dealership has been working with me significantly on repair costs) or to risk throwing more good money at potentially bad money. The vehicle has never had a range 2 high rev but they have a range 1 high rev within the last 2.8 engine hours. There have been 10k ignition events with range 1 rev over the life of the vehicle.
Not sure of what other contributing factors could be or what to expect for ongoing issues after this if I do go through with required repairs?
These are interference engines. If the camshaft stopped rotating while the crankshaft was turning the the valve hit the pistons. And if you look at the sprockets on the camshafts it is hard to imagine how the teeth could “wear” done enough for the cam to slip on the chain. If you lost a camshaft advance paddle or the camshaft tensioner paddle broke this could cause the chain to jump a tooth or two. Yours is a five chain engine and having a chain jump in these engines is less common than in a three chain engine (varioCam Plus engines).
But it I am guessing you are in for more damage then you seem to be thinking. Does the technician working on the car have experience on the 996 engines? At a lot of dealers the techs don’t have that much experience working on the older cars.
^^^ This, only I think it would be a short block.
With particulates throughout the engine, you will be lucky to have an undamaged crank. If you can buy one of the Porsche "remanufactured" short blocks for about 7k, that would be the way to go. Those who have purchased them say they are made up of all new parts. You may need to obtain a good used head for remanufacture on the side with the camshaft damage.
I still have the original engine that I removed from my 2000 and it should have good heads. I haven't taken them off, but could if someone needs a set. Drop me a private message if you end up needing a set.
Abe, where are you located...I have lots of engine parts including heads and cam shaft you can pretty much have. If you are in the NW you can come by a comb through the parts. Normally I sell these parts but it breaks my heart to see someone just get a car and have this happen....Your experience should be euphoric and not one of despair.
