Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am getting smoke on the start up of my C4s 996 but under certain conditions. If the car is warm and has had a run when it was stopped, I have no issue. If the car is started for up a short time, like reversing it out of the garage, then left for around 12 hours (Overnight), I get smoke out of the exhaust for a couple of seconds. It is not out of both exhausts, but can appear out of a particular side. Sometimes the left and sometimes the right. No real pattern. Smoke is light and rises pretty quickly. To overcome the issue when I move the car out of the garage to access the kids toys I tend to run it around the block and the issue is overcome. Can anyone shed some light on what this could be? Car runs great normally and had PPI which didn't pick up any issues. I only do 2-3k a year at weekends, so not often used.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oil is level is at the mid point. I am not aware of the AOS every having been changed. Is the Crankcase pressure tested by pulling off the Oil cap slightly to feel an suction? IS there a more accurate way to tell if this is bad? I pulled the cap off slightly a couple of months ago and didn't feel any suction, but can recheck.

POST 5Original post

Could it be burning of the fuel air mixture when it's cold and disappears when warm?

Definitely a good idea to check the oil level - always... AOS? Eh,... aos is usually a "cloud" of smoke on start up, and sometimes persists for way more than a few seconds. What the op describes sounds pretty typical - especially if it's a higher mileage (over 100k) car

POST 7Original post

Smoke for a few seconds at start up and only after brief usage and long rest? Don't worry about it and enjoy the car. If that's your only issue you are winning big time. Some brand new Porsches smoke at start up.

This a fairly common issue with the boxer engines. Picture the engine configuration and you'll see how the oil could settle in the cylinders on shutdown. Mine usually will occur if I start the car cold, re-position it for washing etc., and shut it down after about 30 seconds of running. Typically will get a puff of white smoke on the next start. Search and you'll see it's been reported for as long as there have been members in this forum. Nothing to worry about - just embarrassing if your neighbors are watching you pull out of the garage when it happens
