POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey all, Have developed another annoying clutch squeak! Car is an 04' Carrera C2 84,000kms. Under 12 months ago I opted to remove the LWFW installed by the PO and address a very loud clutch squeak so it went off to the OPC and got: - New OEM flywheel - New throw out bearing - New clutch disk + pressure plate - New clutch helper spring (under dash) Now another squeak is back! Definitely coming from the gearbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f4sd1ger3j...95542.mp4?dl=0 It's booked in with the OPC in a few weeks but wanted to see what you all think. I'm betting/hoping its a dry or worn slave cylinder as I don't want to have the gearbox dropped. Thoughts? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Wow isn't going to the OPC all the time costing loads, with the age of these cars isn't a good trusted Indy better for your pocket ?? Anyway back to the subject, a slave won't make that noise I don't think it's hydraulic so no cable just moving fluid , that's the clutch pressure plate, if the opc did it get them to fit you another one , sounds like the release fingers in the plate creaking as the thrust bearing pushes against it when you press the pedal!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14141016

It's actually not too bad as the 996 qualifies for "classic pricing"! I supplied the new genuine parts which were significantly cheaper than the quotes they gave me. The flywheel came all the way from Canada I have read that the slave cylinder can get a little squeaky as it gets older but ill find out soon! The clutch plate was new as well so hopefully its covered under some sort of warranty, although I have a feeling they will try and blame the parts I supplied but ill cross that bridge if it comes.

POST 4Original post

Mine was making an identical noise after new flywheel, clutch, bearing, pressure plate and space cylinder. Then it stopped for no reason and hasn't come back. I know this isn't helpful - unless it's just a symptom of things needing to break in a bit and fully seat.

POST 5Original post

I had this symptom and it took several visits to indy to find it. I had what sounded like a creak when pressing and releasing the clutch pedal. Also sounded as if it was coming from gearbox.Turned out being the clutch release arm which showed wear marks where the slave cylinder pushes on the release arm. If you see wear, lube and replace the release arm. Edit: just listened to your video. Same creaking noise I had.

POST 6Original post

I win!!! My clutch squeak is louder and higher pitched. My attempt at a WD-40 fix didn't help anything. Any general guidance on how much replacing the release arm costs through an Indy?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 14142307

Unfortunately to replace the arm you have to pull the transmission. I wouldn't be surprised if this is $700-1000 range. There's a chance they could grease it by removing the clutch slave cylinder but I doubt it. You'd need some great dexterity and a scope.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone, I would hope the OPC would have noted if the arm was worn and recommended a replacement when it was all apart Its the one thing I really can't stand is the squeaking, drives me crazy! The original squeak only really happened when the gearbox got warm/hot it wasn't there when it was started from cold. This squeak is there from cold so it's definitely different from the first which was also significantly louder. Wish I had taken a video of the first for comparison. Anyway will find out exactly what it is in a few weeks when it gets diagnosed and keep everyone posted. Not keen to drop the transmission as it is a $800-1000 job and it would be the 3rd trans drop in under 3 years! 1st - LN IMS + new sprung clutch disk (to match LWFW) + pressure plate + RMS (indy) 2nd - Leaking/defective RMS (new one installed) (Indy no cost) 3rd - Removal of LWFW (new genuine installed) + new clutch disk + new genuine throw out bearing (cause of the first squeak) (opc)

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14142307

If it's really loud and high pitched like a rusty screen door then it's a combination of dry lubrication and worn throw out bearing or at least that was my initial issue. Also there is a TSB regarding older MK1 cars and a loud squeak as the older arm design was prone to this issue. The service bulletin calls for the arm to be replaced by an updated version. As my car is an 04' it already has the new version so im hoping its not the arm but instead the slave cylinder.

POST 10Original post

It's the clutch release arm and/or the throwout bearing. See my thread from 2011. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...the-pedal.html

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14143485

Interesting, throw out bearing is under 3,000 kms old and was the source of the original noise. If its a worn arm it might be tricky trying to prove they 'should' have told me it was on the way out and needed to be replaced at the time. Unless it didnt look worn at the time but now it is, seems unlikely after 3,000kms i'd say that if it looked worn 3,000kms ago they would have told me when they had it open. Gah I have no idea

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey all, Got my car from storage in Saturday to get the tyres fitted. It wasnt a great car weekend actually apart from getting the PS2s... First thing was there was a very small puddle underneath the rear sway bar. Definitely wasn't oil it smelt a bit like coolant but I might have been brake fluid im not sure. I'm guessing that maybe the slave cylinder has started leaking? Second thing I noticed was that my oil pressure seemed high at low rpms. Car was cold but the pressure didn't drop from 5 unless I was slowing down to a stop I haven't noticed this before. I was hoping that maybe the gauge isn't reading correctly unless I just haven't noticed this before. Oil is m1 0w40. Third thing was my clutch pedal doesn't return all the way. It gets to 3/4 and just sits there and when I give it a tap from behind it snaps back the rest of the way. There is a bit of fluid around the pedal im guessing this is the clutch master cylinder that's given up. Getting it towed to the dealership tomorrow, anyone experience the issues mentioned above? I don't want to risk driving it as it's quite hard to with a pedal that's only half working. Hope everyone else had a better 996 weekend than I did!

POST 13Original post

1) AOS or coolant lines to AOS will result in coolant puddle where you say it is. 2) Replace oil pressure sender unit 3) Clutch pedal spring is binding

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14166273

Thanks Joe, no smoke so im hoping the AOS is okay and its just a hose. I'll get the dealership to check the gauge vs PWIS2 to see if it's accurate The clutch pedal spring was replaced under a year ago so it's fairly new. Not too sure about that but it's the main issue at the moment.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay so just an update on this the dealership want to drop the gearbox but i've said no as I'm not willing to spend the money on dropping it. Only because its has a new flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk and throw out bearing. Anyone else experienced issues like this? I believe its the slave cylinder causing all the issues as its the only part in the equation that hasn't been changed. Clutch pedal spring is new Joe any other ideas? Would the slave cause a squeak then as its gotten worse and given up and cause the pedal not to return to full out?

POST 16Original post

Sounds like the noise is coming from under the car. You can remove the clutch slave and lube the end of its rod, where it presses on the release arm. If that doesn't fix it, it's something imside the tranny and dropping it is the only way to lube the components inside.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Ahsai, the problem actually because quite significant over the weekend the clutch squeak from the underside of the car went away and the pedal stopped returning to the full out position. So I could push it in and get in gear but upon clutch release it would get 3/4 of the way up and stop. I'd have to put my shoe under the pedal give it a small bump and it would spring back. These isn't enough pressure in the line to return the pedal. Could that be the slave, master or both? Or something inside the gearbox which i'm hoping is unlikely as the box was out under 3,000kms ago and it had all new parts: flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing and clutch disk. Other than the pedal all other gearbox operation was working as it should.

POST 18Original post

Dan did you read my post #5? I had same symptoms with my car. Only creaked once car had warmed up also. I replaced the slave cylinder first, didn't help but once I replaced the release arm the noise and pedal action was fixed.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14173715

Thanks hardback, that issue was actually fixed and it was fork arm related it was a bad throw out bearing which was probably destroyed by the LWFW I had. Dealership replaced it and the noise was gone. Now 8 months later the pedal won't return to full up position, the same as this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/828511-clutch-problem-pedal-is-kicking-at-me.html That was resolved by a new master cylinder. The dealership want to remove the gearbox to find the squeak but I believe that because they reassembled everything with new parts (flywheel, clutch disk, throw out bearing and pressure plate) it should be on them. Not sure how that's going to go. Anyway the priority at this point is getting the clutch pedal working again and they aren't really diagnosing the culprit, just wanting the drop the gearbox at my expense...

POST 20Original post

I feel your pain. These cars require an insane amount of money, maintenance and patience to keep running properly. I cant tell you how many parts I've replaced over the last 8 years of ownership including an engine rebuild. AND I still need to replace all control arms. Good luck with diagnosis and hoping the repair goes easy on your wallet.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14177108

Thanks, definitely painful, seems to always be something going wrong or happening The last word from the dealership was "we will sort it all out" to which I replied don't do anything without my okay! haha see how we go... My parts list continues to grow and its only been 3 years, luckily i've been able to do a few things myself and i'm getting better at it. Also the community is great for advice and knowledge! I just did the control arms, fronts were easy, rears not so much.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So just an update on this, interestingly there was nothing wrong with the gearbox or the hydraulic system! It was the pedal assembly that was un-lubricated. So the OPC removed it lubricated it and re installed it Had the alignment done, all good! Squeak hasn't come back yet, hoping that it never does!

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14212657

Well, spoke too soon... Same issue presented itself whilst on the way home from the OPC. They have it again now they are thinking either clutch slave or master which was my first thought... Mist likely the slave as it would make sense that it started making noise and now it's slowly failing. Luckily I was able to get it there without grinding any gears or losing any clutch action.

POST 24Original post

I got this on my previous 996 Carrera Mk2. Got it fixed by the official Porsche workshop here on warranty. The day I sold it I could hear it begin again, faintly. About a year after it got fixed. Only happened when warm and had been driving for some time. link to thread with videos

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 14218061, 12254954

Yep exactly the same noise I had last year, fixed with a new throw out bearing! I've got a new problem that the pedal wont return, I think its either the clutch slave or master.

POST 26Original post

I get a "chirp" on occasion, but usually when the car is cold. Often times I am at a stop with the car pointing slightly uphill, or when it is damp out. Only seems to happen in first gear. Definitely not the pedal assembly. Anyone else have this experience? Keith

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14222111

Someone else might have direct experience with this but from what I've learnt it could be: - slave cylinder - pressure plate - throw out bearing - internal lubrication of the gearbox How many kms/miles and how old are the various components?

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quick update, the pedal not coming back up was in fact the slave cylinder (my thought all along!). Anyway thought this morning that I should have the OPC replace the master cylinder whilst the system was drained but they replaced it before I could ask them to do it Anyone have any issues with replacing the slave and not the master?
