Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just recharged the A/C on my '01 996. The A/C was blowing nice & cold. I shut the engine down and went back to close the lid. I heard a hissing sound....escaping refrigerant I'm guessing. It's tight in there but I moved every hose & tube I could get my hands on.....no change in hissing sound. After about 4-5 mins. it stopped hissing. I checked the A/C pressure with car running and compressor turning.........0 lbs. I have not charged the A/C since the engine was changed out (IMS failure) last Fall. Thought? Ideas? Solutions? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Perhaps there is a loose or cut/torn supply hose? Or perhaps the connectors is missing one of the O-rings inside. So the lines maybe tight but not creating a seal without the proper O-ring with in. Could be worth taking it to a charge station and having them vacuum out any moisture and remaining Refrigerant that your system may have with in it and then have them pour some leak detection solution and then pressurize the system to identify the leak or connection missing the sealing o-ring.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good advice..... I think I will get to some of it by removing the Air Box.....but not all I think. Looks like more "stuff" to remove to actually reach where the leak may be!?! I'm thinking that when the Mech. put the thing back together....1. he didn't bother charging the system and 2. He may have not fully tightened all the fittings!?! More ideas???

POST 4Original post

Yeah removing the air box will give you better visibility to the compressor and the two lines back there. If the mechanic disconnected lines in the back near the fuel cooler you may want to check those out too. Because those lines back there also have O-rings too. The yellow arrows are the area behind the AC compressor, the orange one you should be able to see just by opening the hood. Check these lines (green arrows) on the back of the fuel cooler behind the Compressor. I still believe in my first response, to have a qualified service station find the leak for you, then once the leak is found they can drain the system properly for you and you or they can fix the problem then service the system accordingly. I seriously think it will be much faster and easier on you going this route.

POST 5Original post

A suggestion for some 'secret sauce' so you don't have to repeat the task after you have fixed this leak. Research using "NYLOG" on the threads+seals of the pressure fittings.Get the tech to consider doing a pre-test of the system with nitrogen. But before that -are you sure the receiver dryer is still effective ?

POST 6Original post

My local Autozone sells the UV/fluorescent stuff to find an AC system leak. Not sure what you use to detect it - I imagine it comes with a light. If not, I have an LED flashlight with UV diodes that works really well for spotting tiny little scorpions that decide they like living indoors better than outdoors...one just like it can also be yours from Amazon.com for the low, low price of a few bucks. Since your leak is seemingly massive, charging it up with fluorescent dye and then hitting it with a UV light should light up the leak brighter than a hotel room bedspread soaked in luminol. *edit* Amazon shows the kits coming with a UV light and some tinted goggles.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Device 2.........GREAT Graphic. Thanks! Schnell.........I'm on it. Appreciate the advice. As I do most of my wrenching......this really helps.

POST 8Original post

Use a halogen leak detector 'sniffer' for a small leak. Use nitrogen for a big leak like the OP has.Otherwise you will waste/pollute with Freon. A/c issues like this require so much special equipment now it is questionable as a diy project
