I've found info on replacing the stalk/switch set and I understand for that the steering wheel must come off, but if I turn the wheel a quarter turn left and right, I can access the 4 screws behind the wheel.

But the big question is will those covers come off after removing these 6 screws and if they do, will I have access to the screws to tighten the OBC stalk?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought my car (2002 996 cabrio) almost a year ago. I've addressed almost all the issues, mostly small, but the stalk for the OBC is wiggly. Works perfectly. I've found info on replacing the stalk/switch set and I understand for that the steering wheel must come off, but if I turn the wheel a quarter turn left and right, I can access the 4 screws behind the wheel. I know there are 2 more screws holding the upper and lower covers which are accessible from the sides. But the big question is will those covers come off after removing these 6 screws and if they do, will I have access to the screws to tighten the OBC stalk? Thanks in advance for any help.

POST 2Original post

No need to remove steering wheel. Take those 4 screws and the 2 side ones out and the steering column collar comes off in pieces. Some plastic and some soft rubber. Just notice how everything fits as you remove them. You will be able to see the two screws used to attach the OBC stalk, assuming they are both there. Blue loctite is your friend here.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's what I thought. Thanks for the reinforcement and I will attempt this on the next good day.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Did the job today. You were right, easy to disassemble,, one of the screws that hold the OBC stalk in was missing but was laying in the lower clamshell of the column cover! A little blue Loctite, repolace the screws and then fiddle for a half hour to get it back together correctly. Works perfectly and looks great. Thanks for the help.
