Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello. I have a 2003 996, RWD, 6-speed, coupe. Lowered on JIC's (which so far I have no complaints with). However, when I turn my steering wheel left and slowly go up the lip/curb on my driveway, I hear a strange combination of a singular clunk/pop noise from the driver's side rear suspension when my car is halfway past the lip/curb to my driveway. The noise appears to be nearer to the ground as opposed to higher up. The car will regularly make this noise when having to turn left or right up mostly any aggressive driveway. Hardly ever makes the clunk/pop noise otherwise. It's a very quick noise. Just one singular clunk/pop and done. Tried looking under the car to diagnose. Stock sway bar links and mounts aren't broken. Bushings on all the suspension joints look fine. Can't really see any wear marks on anything (though my vision is limited because I personally can't jack up the car). Suspension and car seems to ride perfectly normal other than that. What are your thoughts? Ever been through this? Thanks, Chris.

POST 2Original post

Hey, do also get the noise when moving off where there is a bit of force going to the rear? https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...se-noises.html

POST 3Original post

My guess is your rear wheel bearing is going bad. The lateral force turning left or right is causing the wheel bearing to clunk/pop.

Hmmm...IMO, I would think a wheel bearing would be more of a constant whine or grind than a "clunk" - unless it's really bad... I just can't see that much play in a bearing - if it was that bad it would be really noticeable all the time. In any case, the wheel bearing shouldn't be too difficult to check. My guess would be more like a spring perch or something in the control arms/track arms (ball joint?) etc... Anyway, get the rear up on jack stands and block up the right rear tire (so when you jack up the drivers side tire you don't upset the balance of the car and knock it off the jack stands - better safe than sorry). Then put a jack under the drivers side tire and compress the suspension - hopefully you can get the clunk to happen under this condition so you can identify it... Good luck

POST 5Original post

dporto is onto something and my quick response is just one of the elements that needs to be checked. The clunk could be anything from loose lug nuts to driveshaft, struts, strut mounts, control arms, links, basically every suspension component is suspect. OP is going to have to get the car up on stands, remove the wheel and start checking everything. Don't forget about checking the motor mounts as well. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

POST 6Original post

Whats your ride height? My guesses are 1) the spring settling. As the spring compresses it twists and there is friction where the spring sits on the perch. Instead of rotating freely, it may build up tension and than give making that sound. Or, 2) the shock mount.
