Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looks like my 2002 w/ 59k miles has a power steering fluid leak. Anyone experience the same under ownership? If so, what parts typically go bad and what could be the potential causes for the leak? I'll get my 996 into my indy this winter, but good to get some details from your experiences. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

My 04 996 had a small weep on the High Pressure line in engine compartment My Indy told me that the line has a control valve that is a known weak point right at the crimp spot where the rubber hose connects to the metal line its weeps Never let a drop on the garage floor but it dripped on the coolant hose directly below it I lived with it for a while but as a P car nut I had the hose replaced Some has said you can check the connections and tighten at the crimp. I tried and no joy. Good luck

POST 3Original post

The high pressure line is the one that leaks. It's $350 and takes 3 hours to replace.

Ouch.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Probably should have added the parts to the "while you are in there" list when my engine was dropped earlier this year. 21 year old part will eventually go. Didn't think about that one. Appreciate the insight guys!

POST 6Original post

Yep Its not easy to get to with engine in car There are a few good thread on DIY 3 hours maybe if youve done it before and have all the right tools. Crow feet wrench set is a must

Appreciate the info. This one is definitely beyond my skillset. Gonna add it to my indy to-do list.

POST 8Original post

There are o-rings in the hose right below the power steering reservoir that can leak. There was a post a while back that listed where to buy the o-rings as Porsche does not list them separately, as far as I remember. I'd diagnose the leak first rather than assuming it's the high pressure line.

Appreciate the comments. All comments are extremely helpful because I never studied nor paid attention to the power steering components nor potential issues. Yeah, I just got a flexible scope and plan to look around to see. Thanks man!

POST 10Original post

If you find the link to the o-ring source, post it here. I might go ahead and pick up some spares just in case.

POST 11Original post

I took the o-rings down to the local hydraulic shop. They measured them and gave me replacements for less then a dollar. Never did get the size, sorry.
