The only way to find out is to remove your center console, detach the offending cable, and check the resistance of the shifter during lateral movement.
Leading evidence: 'l' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'l' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check resistance of the shifter during lateral movement' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I tried lubricating the pulleys on the gearbox casing but no bueno.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A little persuasion with a rubber mallet did the trick for me.
Anyone with the original Numeric Racing shifter upgraded to the new version 2.0 with the self-centering spring? I have the original.....wondering if it's worth upgrading to 2.0 with the spring, or if I'm just overthinking it.
https://flat6motorsports.com/collect...ow-shifter-996
The lack of centering is my main issue with the 996 gearbox, I am also on the original shifter.
Wondering if a centering spring can be added to the original one somehow.
I have the V2 with the centering spring and installed it as such. There is an option to remove the spring upon installation, so it behaves exactly like a V1 non-centering spring option, but I havent done that. As such, I cant compare the differences between using and not using a centering spring.
I can say that I do like my shifter with the centering spring. It certainly made cable alignment, during installation, easier. On the other hand, I had to trim a bit of plastic on the cable end (which attaches to the bottom of the shift lever), because the protrusion from the centering spring interfered with the cable ends motion of travel.
In terms of shift quality: there is a noticeable bit of additional resistance when moving the lever from side to side. Shifting from 4th to 5th, or from 3rd to 2nd, requires a teensy bit more effort. The centering effect makes 2nd to 3rd very easy.
As Im typing this out, I wonder if I may be happier with the centering spring removed. I think it would minimize the inconsistency I feel between shift directions. However, I also dont find it enough of an annoyance to make me want to remove my center console to test.
I just ordered mine. I'll provide a report after install.
I'm just wondering for those that have self installed the Numeric, did you keep the cover that has the clips to hold the window controls or did you ditch that cover? If you kept it, how did you secure it?
My OEM shifter always returned to center. Now I have Numeric V1 and cables and it returns to center as well. I would also like to hear the difference in feel of V1 vs V2.
Mine also returns to the center, but its very slow. I really have to focus when going from 5th to 4th for example — by inertia the shifter just goes into 6th — centering is too weak.
I tried lubricating the pulleys on the gearbox casing but no bueno.
You probably have a malfunctioning cable. The only way to find out is to remove your center console, detach the offending cable, and check the resistance of the shifter during lateral movement. You could also move the detached cable back and forth with your hand and gauge its resistance. Do the same with the fore-aft cable (detached) to check whether theyre similar or not.
I don't understand — without the cables the shifter just flops around, there is nothing connecting it to the gearbox.
The problem is the l
eft/right lever shaft binding within the transmission housing.
Replaced the B&M clone SSK with the Numeric V2. Although the throws have remained relatively the same, the Numeric took out all the slop from the previous short shifter. For example, when in gear, the B&M clone had almost as much side to side play as when in neutral. There is minimal side to side play with the Numeric when in gear. Shifting effort is actually easier (I don't have any experience with a stock 996 manual shifter so I'm comparing it with the B&M clone), however, you still have to shift on purpose. The shifting is also more precise. With the previous shifter, going from 2nd to 3rd sometimes requires a bit of a reset if it hesitates going into 3rd. All in all, I'm happy with the purchase. The only tip I have is if you are installing on a carpeted tunnel, it will be tight fit getting the back of the Numeric into the posts. A little persuasion with a rubber mallet did the trick for me. I did not cut any carpet. Also, while I had the seat heater controls off, I fished out the Porsche Telephone connector to make it easier for me to attach the Rennclassic USB fast charging module when it comes in.
B&M short shifter clone versus Numeric V2 after installation. This video somewhat shows the self centering function of the Numeric.

The centering looks quite nice. On what throw level have you set the Numeric?
Also its funny how much play there is with an almost 1000$ shifter, the OEM Miata NA shifter is better than this
I have it on the middle setting. Also, the shifter it replaced is not OEM. It's a generic short shifter (probably from eBay) that was on the car when I got it. One of the circlips holding the bushing fell off which allowed the bushing and rod to fall of the back of the shifter (luckily, I wasn't driving when it happened). This is why I switched it out for a Numeric.
Best shifter I have ever used is in my 1978 280Z.
These shifters have one thing in common: they are directly attached to the trans. No cables. Might be challenging to do this is a 911 though.
Tell that to Honda
Also, the amazing Acuity shifter is 480 bucks, and looks to be very complex and high quality unit — even compared to the Numeric which is almost double the price. Classic Porsche tax.

Honda S2000 shifter is delightful, and uses cables. The cable shifter in my 2008 Fit was pretty sweet too. Admittedly much shorter cable runs, but it's undeniably true that Honda knows how to make cable shifters work.
I feel like the tiny amount of slop I have in my shifter is actually due to the play inside the transmission itself. I have new bushings in the transmission housing but there is still a touch of looseness in the shifter.
I may be overly **** though?
However, it is miles better than the shifter in my e30. It has a DSSR and Ive tried numerous shifters and transmissions
What bushings have you replaced in the transmission housing? AFAIK the levers are not resting on any bushings.
As for the play, I think part of it is also due to the stock shift **** the plastic inside probably gets soft with age. My next step is new cables + an aftermarket **** to take out the slack.
I think it was this one, Ill have to dig through my
notes. Brass sleeve is a better description.

Thank you!
Was the procedure as described in this thread
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turb...lacement.html?
Have you replaced the seal as well?
I can't believe I didn't do this while I was replacing my 2nd gear
