Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I did it by lowering the engine and also replace the aos while I was back there.

I hear rumor that one can use the 997 coolant tank in the early 1999 996 car, with possible modification.

Everyone struggles for hours R&Ring the coolant tanks, ( or uses a SawsAll on a bunch of stuff ) ..but if you lower the engine from the rear engine mounts you can also "push" the engine over to the passenger side a lot more than you think...

Now, if I can convince Porsche to stop using those quick squeeze clamps that always face the wrong way.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The proper 1999 coolant tank is 3x more expensive than the proper 997 coolant tank. I hear rumor that one can use the 997 coolant tank in the early 1999 996 car, with possible modification. I can tell that the 997 tank is a bit longer at the tail end than the 996 tank.
Please, can someone who has DONE this confirm that the rumor is true and if there to be any modifications?
The 997 tank is the same as the 996 2001 and up so that may help in your search for the answer.

From what I've read, the only person who did this did it with the engine out, so I'm not convinced that it's doable. It's tough enough getting the proper tank in.
I had a 2000 996.1 with a failed original coolant tank. I used one of those trash uro parts replacements and it failed in 2 yrs. The OEM . 1 tanks is $1300 or so in Canada, the .2 tank is 1/3 the price. It will fit. You have to trim off some webbing from the bottom to get it in. It's an extremely tight fit with the engine in the car and the intake manifold on. I did it by lowering the engine and also replace the aos while I was back there.

It makes the R&R much much easier ...
Let me confirm that this conversion does work. The modification is minimal and the longer tank fits without any issue. Now, if I can convince Porsche to stop using those quick squeeze clamps that always face the wrong way.
I too can also confirm this works. I used a 01+ coolant tank on my 99. Easier to do with the engine lowered quite a bit, and maybe the driver's side intake plenum removed, but I don't remember.
