I've changed the vertical one on the underside of the engine on left side, also the horizontal one on right side near to the oil filter, both being 32mm hex bolts.

Suggestion

On the occasional 1 out of 10 cold starts there may be just a muffled hint of a rattle for a fraction of a second...These oils aren't the very expensive oils many here use but plenty good enough for a street car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Try some 15/50 or 20/50 weight oil, that fixed 95% of my start up rattle compared to 0/40.Mobil1_Try some15/50Mobil1 or Valvoline 20/50 race oil, they will do the trick, at least they did for me.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im changing the chain tensioner bolts in the hope of fixing cold start rattle (might work), on my rhd 996.1 c4 with M96/04 engine. I've changed the vertical one on the underside of the engine on left side, also the horizontal one on right side near to the oil filter, both being 32mm hex bolts. I cant for the life of me find the third vertical one which has the 'Allen key head', i think the one for bank 2. There is a lot online on Boxsters, where this is located under the air compressor (which makes sense). So I removed the air compressor and ... nothing there. Can any of you help please?

POST 2Original post

Its there. May not be an allen bolt my y2k has a 24mm (i think) hex

Would you have a photo of where it is please .. I cant see anything under there at all?

POST 4Original post

Sorry that motor has long been blown up. 2 sec google search found this. I guessing that mine was an allen but forgot. Looks like u have to pull the ac comp mounting block too. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...y-for-ims.html

Its there, was under the a/c comp mount on my 2001 c2. I changed all 3 for the same reason as you. And no luck. Still had the same startup rattle for maybe 2-3 seconds on cold starts only. Feel the spring in the old or new chain tensor, its very very stout/beefy, try pushing it in. Even without oil pressure it will keep chain tight enough at idle, thats why its there is my guess. If spring is not busted and chain guides are still intact,, 3 new tensors probably will have 0 effect. did me no good. All new tensors did nothing for my rattle... Try some 15/50 or 20/50 weight oil, that fixed 95% of my start up rattle compared to 0/40.Mobil1_Try some15/50Mobil1 or Valvoline 20/50 race oil, they will do the trick, at least they did for me. With the 50 weight oil, now on cold starts 9 out of 10 starts have no rattle at all. On the occasional 1 out of 10 cold starts there may be just a muffled hint of a rattle for a fraction of a second...These oils aren't the very expensive oils many here use but plenty good enough for a street car. Add a half can of moly to the M1/50 if ya want more bore score protection. some say moly is the answer, who knows... The Valvoline already has enough moly.. And cheap enough for a try if your all new tensors don't do the trick for you

POST 7Original post

this is an 04, the tensioner is buried under the bracket for the power steering line.. this is with the AC compressor already removed. Yellow highlights where the tensioner is hidden
