Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. Yeah sorry 2004 3.6 ....That noise was not at start up, but sometimes I did get a metallic sound on start up and I thought it was the starter and that has been going on for 6 months off an on.

Suggestion
I'd like to hear more of this noise if you could make a longer video and add in some RPM changes/Revs, and maybe turn on A/C and off ...and maybe a steady few seconds at 1500rpm and 2500rpm ?
Leading evidence: 'starter' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'starter' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace /revs, and maybe turn' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just had a recent oil change with no debris or issues.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ive had a metallic sound on start up for a while now and not awalys and when I researched here it seems to be a starter teeth issue, but today I am thinking it was maybe pistons slapping? Just had a recent oil change with no debris or issues.
But I started to hear a sound as if some was loose and reserached again and seemed to be coming the driver side and thought maybe it was the baffles that came loose? And today this...No drop in oil pressure and engine revs fine and didnt seem to indicate issues as I drove home and took this video

Sounds exactly like rod knock to me. Whats oil pressure @ fully hot idle
Only thing throwing me off just a little is the rpm of the knock, seems just a tad fast for rod knock at low idle.
Does the knock follow rpm when rev'd up..? What rpm is that video at..?
Sorry, hope I'm wrong, just giving my edumucated opinion.
It appears that you have a 996.2, please confirm. Is this noise there 100% of the time or just shortly after cold start? How about when warm?
Many of the 99's would have a similar noise on cold start, you just drive away and put load on it for 10 seconds and it's gone until the next cold start.
Yeah sorry 2004 3.6 ....That noise was not at start up, but sometimes I did get a metallic sound on start up and I thought it was the starter and that has been going on for 6 months off an on. The noise on the video is from full warm up and oil pressure is around 2 bars. I just ended driving it again to my bank which is close by and its the same sound after warm up. This noise just started today or maybe a few days back
@911Dreamer
I assume this noise goes away under loads ??
Yes the rhythm sounds too fast to be a rod/piston knock...
When I hear this type of noise I tell people to take a good listen to the cats... but they never do and never report back...............I think they either get rid of the car or are too embarrassed to report back....
Get yourself one of these.

I dont hear this sound on start up, maybe a little rattle and while driving I dont hear it in the cabin as well. On loads the engine sounds fine pressure is fine and revs and drives as it should. My car has 80k+ miles on it. It seemed to be more on the drivers side and now it seems to be in the middle
I dont know what a failing cat sounds like?....I started it 2 times yesterday after 1st time warmed up and it doesnt make that noise on start up?

And of course either listen to the cats or go a PRo and tell him specifically to listen to the Cats...ASAP please??
@Porschetech3
Well I think my engine is not dead lol....But you tell me if this is making that rattle, I didnt look at these until you said to take another video. The engine to me feels fine and revs as it should and no oil pressure loss. 80k miles
Left side muffler is fine
But the right hand side, wow
@911Dreamer
I can't tell you if that is making the "noise".........I can't hear a thing from it !!!
But I can tell you for sure those mufflers are a piece of S**T !!! lol..
Let a Pro listen to it ........
@Porschetech3
Yeah I agree on the mufflers.....Heres the video
Start up, water is from rain we got this morning
