After a code brown like that I'm just happy to see the damage is what it is and you're obviously unscathed - besides your dry cleaning bill.

Insurance guy came out and took lots of pics and whatnot, the car does not have enough body damage to total it so the car is going to the repair facility for further inspection and a true estimate.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

All,
Title says it all. It could have been much worse for me and the car. The 18 wheeler got into the left hand side of the car while I was in the middle lane. Both wheels are toast, quarter panels and door are done for, and I suspect the drivers side suspension is bent.
Car is going into the Local Porsche dealers repair facility next week. Any one want to make a pool for who can guess the closest for the estimate? I'll start, 20k.
Be careful out there yall.
Also, please get a dashcam. For less than 100 bones you will not have to deal with any drama from the insurance companies. Ill post the video next week for those interested.

Fortunately you were driving a Porsche. In a lesser car you might not have walked away. These are solid cars. Been there, done that. But, it's a real shame it got crunched. Hopefully only body panels and wheels. Oh yeah, and maybe deep cleaning of the drivers seat.
Glad you are OK.
I have to say that while I feel safe in my C4S, I have seen an accident in the exact same car that ended in a fatality that shouldn't have...rattled me a little.
glad to know that you are ok! that is the most important. On the other hand, did you get the driver's insurance info or did he/she just drive away after hitting you? also did you file a police report over the hit? Honestly unless you came flying up the middle lane into the back of the truck while it was merging into the middle lane, the driver of the truck i believe would be at fault because he merged into you (even though its not super fair because he likely could not even see you). You would probably not have to pay too much (or anything out of pocket for repairs if this is the case, otherwise I'd estimate about 40-50% of the value of the 996tt now because its had a serious accident. Sorry it happened, hopefully you get it fixed and can get back out on the road! stay safe!
Wow! Bummer... I'm going to guess $20k range in damages - remember, it probably needs a full repaint - $8-10k right there...
"I have to say that while I feel safe in my C4S, I have seen an accident in the exact same car that ended in a fatality that shouldn't have...rattled me a little."
What do you mean "shouldn't have"... You can die doing just about anything, why would someone dying in a car crash surprise you? Not to be morbid, but if you're going to make such a claim, the circumstances of the accident (speed, location of impact, # of cars, object hit if not another car, etc...) would be helpful to determine why you're "rattled"...
Driver of truck pulled over and I called the highway patrol and got a police report. Its pretty obvious that he was at fault and he claimed it. The dashcam video makes it all the more apparent and un-debatable. We actually have the same insurance company so hopefully that will speed the process along. The insurance people have the video so i dont think much time will be needed for the fault to be allocated to the truck. Also a bystander stopped and gave his info saying he saw the wreck. It should be open and shut case.
Anyone have a broad idea about how much of a vehicle's worth need to be achieved before they total it? The car is prolly worth in the neighborhood of 45-50k. Would they total it at 40-50% of value?
That is I bummer. I had a guy in an SUV pull over on me on I85 out of Atlanta last night. Fortunately, I was able to move over while I accelerated because there was no one on my other side. He was driving without his lights on at 10 pm and I suspect he was drunk.
I am going to be an optimist and guess 15k. The car would probably bring decent money at auction so I am thinking they will total it if the repair estimate exceeds 20k.
I can't share the photos, but a Ford Escape T-boned a 2002 C4S at city speeds on the passenger side. There was a lot of cabin intrusion that was unusual for the vehicles and speeds involved. The passenger was killed.
Glad you are ok! Could have been much worse. Our cars do tend to hide in rearview mirrors. My uneducated guess on repairs is between $20k and $22k. Good luck. Keep us in the loop. Inquiring minds want to know...
No. The damage is not bad at all—at least from the pictures. Airbags didn't deploy, did they? The damage is equivalent to a low speed side swipe, not a crash. However, you might want to try for a diminished value claim as someone else suggested.
The left front wheel got hit pretty hard, but can't tell if that translates to suspension or steering problems. My guess is not.
I have the same Fikse wheels and the centers unbolt from the inside. You may only need the rims replaced.
My bet is that you will need new skin on the left front fender and left door. The rear can be bumped and buffed to new, I think.
Your total bill will be much less than the $20K. I have pictures of my 964 after an accident that makes yours look like a minor parking mishap. My bill was $22k (about $34K in 2018 dollars) and I went way overboard with all kinds of extras, including a full concours repaint at my expense. When it was done it looked like the first day in the showroom. Actually better.
Having been down this road a few times, I know it can be disheartening, but things will work out. Metal and plastic can be fixed. Blood and guts, not so easily.
Please keep us updated.
Side impacts are the real killers. Trucks and SUVs are the worst due to the height of the bumpers relative to the driver in a car.
First, there is a lot less material to protect the occupant.
Second, the human body's organs do not tolerate lateral acceleration well. My wife was a paramedic and has seen more than her fair share of what looks like the uninjured dead, but internally they bleed out quickly from the shear forces.
Something to be thinking about at intersections.
Is all the damage pictured? If so theres no way thats $20k in damage. Looks like a little fender and door damage and very minor quarter panel damage. Is the damage worse than it appears in the Pics?
Fair enough^^ by city speeds do you mean 40 mph or less? A square hit at that speed is definitely enough to slam a passengers head into the window, or even the roof edge. Its also possible that the airbag didnt deploy...In addition, its possible that the passenger had some other physical defect that was exacerbated by the crash... I guess what Im trying to say is that generally speaking, if everything is in working order, these are considered pretty safe cars
I'm in for 14K. Another thing to be thankful for is that the truck did not have those 8" spiked "chariot wheel" cutting lug bolts. They would have opened the side like a tuna can.
you got off lucky.
An 18 wheeler hit my driver's side (I was in the right lane of a 2 lane highway) and the 18 wheeler tried to occupy the space I was in.
His front cab latched on to my rear fender, dragged my car for 50 yards until it became unlatched and I did at least a 180 and then barrel rolled into a ditch into the median with 3 passengers in the car. The roof collapsed (car came to rest upside down). Luckily, all my track experience spinning kept me Calm and didn't touch the brakes otherwise It would have been worst.
All three passengers had to go to the hospital but no one hurt thankfully. State Trooper mentioned that he'd seen a lot of accidents and was totally surprised at the fact that we all walked away alive.
Moral of the story: Don't ever spend any amount of time next to the truck and keep out of their blind spots (which is much, much larger than you think). I rather risk blowing by a truck at 100 mph than to casually pass them at the speed limit.
The worst truck accident I saw was on a busy highway when a loaded semi rear ended another semi that had a large bulldozer on its trailer.
The bulldozer was knocked askew and had a few scratchesnothing a can of yellow spray paint wouldn't fix.
The "other guy" probably did not make it. The front engine compartment of the cab was compressed clean back to the cab's window. An impressive, but sorrowful, match between two titans.
Just as an aside, in Illinois if the damage is more than 25% of the value of the car it is considered totaled and gets a salvage/rebuilt title. These days is does not take that much damage for the cost to exceed 25%, particularly with an older 996.
This is an extension of the TED concept - the Time Exposed to Danger - it applies specifically to the time in the opposite driving lane when overtaking, and advanced driving training says you should keep this as short as possible by accelerating up to a speed well over the vehicle being overtaken. In this case - I always accelerate quickly past a truck even if I'm in a lane designated in the same direction - I NEVER cruise alongside.
In this country the idiot police will ticket you for speeding if you are overtaking and exceed the speed limit - they have no idea of the concept of TED, or if they do, revenue generation transcends that as a priority!
One of my best friends explained going 120 MPH on a crotch rocket as safe for almost this exact reason. He said: "I drive around the accidents."
It kind of made sense. Kind of.
Experienced moto guys will never be caught next to, or between deadly objects. I try to apply that to cage driving as well.
I once had a semi truck tire explode while I was overtaking in a car. It was so powerful I thought my sunroof blew off. Literally shook my car.
Glad OP is safe. Be careful out there all!
I ride a touring motorcycle and believe I'm safest when riding at least 5 mph faster than the cars around me. That way the danger is mostly in front of me and therefore avoidable.
One simple rule is: always leave a place to put your vehicle.
During training as a pilot we were also taught to think of "what might go wrong" and "have an action plan" if it does.
Instructors were always asking what we would do if...
You can't always be 100% in the "Condition Red" as in
Cooper's Colors
, but your situational awareness level should track with the level of the current threats and risks around you.
Quick update. Insurance companies found other driver at fault (obviously) and will get it taken to the collision center that the Porsche dealership uses. Ill give some more updates when I get them.
Yeah, Ill post it when I get home from work. I try to stay off YT at work so as not to pique the interest of our IT folks.
Also, Thanks for all for the great replies! Its giving me lots to ponder on.
Minor update, they are going to send out the insurance adjuster to my house to see if they are going to total it just based on the body damage pics (same that I posted earlier). I let yall know what comes of it in a few days. Wish me luck either way it goes.
If they come with a reasonable dollar figure Id prefer they total it since it will be hard to sell with the damaged record against it. Plus I could by it back from them, fix any suspension damage and turn it into a track car or sell it with a salvage title.
all ready on that. I got 1/2 a dozen or so that are about the same as my car from BAT that have all ready sold, some more that are for sale, and I grabbed some more on Autotrader that are currently for sale. Im gonna have an arsenal of them by friday.
Insurance guy came out and took lots of pics and whatnot, the car does not have enough body damage to total it so the car is going to the repair facility for further inspection and a true estimate. Then it will be decided if it will get totaled or fixed. More updates to come hopefully next week.
Car is still in collision repair. 11.5 and counting. Insurance co is fighting replacing all four tires even though Porsche says that you should replace tires by axle. I think I finally have them on board. They have not investigated if there is suspension damage yet. They gave me a convertible mustang (not a bad little car) for the rental so I havent been pressing the shop to hard. Ill keep yall posted.
Well, it took 4 months and a week to get the car back. It was a long wait but the car came back flawless and with new wheels and tires! Total was around 14k. I started the diminished value claim on Friday so we will see where the negotiation leads.
I'm glad you had a good outcome. I have the same type of damage (from the truck's lugs) but mine is considerably worse. If your repair bill was $14k, mine is likely to be totaled.
Latest update. I got a call from the insurance people yesterday asking me what I was looking to get for the DV claim. lols. I told them 15% of the value of the car (48k), so 7,200 and we can call it square. We will see how it goes with that.
A couple of weeks ago, I saw a brand-new 911 get peeled open as if with a can opener the entire length of the drivers side.
It was on the shoulder of the Deegan near Yankee Stadium which is a lousy enough ride on a good day.
I didn't see what did it, though there was a Hyundai suv stopped a couple of lengths behind it.
Somebody's spirited commute from Wall St. to Westchester will have to wait a while.
Well its over. Its finally over...They offered me 4310.00 for the DMV claim, i had an appraisal done that came in around 6600 and we met in the middle at 5500. Looks like its time for the suspensions upgrades/refresh. Thanks to all for the help as always.
