Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check codes, nada' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'exhaust - maybe mufflers or cats' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check codes, nada' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So after about 10mins I reconnected the battery, turned key on for 1 min, off for 10 sec, started car, and voila!

replaced the plugs and coils, used the bigger BERU's

Suggestion
So if folks are taking out their filter for inspection, go ahead and put the new filter in place after cleaning and fill the assembly full of oil again.

Suggestion
The advantage to putting the filter in the canister is to fill the filter/canister assembly with oil to the top, and that way, there a lot less air for the oil pump to deliver (and air is bad) when the car is restarted for the first time.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Outcome without a verified action link
To sum it up - it happened suddenly, no change in power.
03 996, stock engine, 86K, has the single row LN engineering IMS bearing.
Going to work this morning just driving along and it seemed to get a little louder, like an exhaust leak.
Driving home it seemed ok, just a little louder than usual. I have the mild Fiskar exhaust, not stock.
Please listen to this and tell me, should I drive it? My mechanic is out of town for 3 weeks, so if you say it sits then it sits for a while.
What do you guys think?

That sounds a little bit like my car when I lift off the throttle at RPMs higher than that which the fuel injectors are spraying (part of the fuel saving mechanism on these cars). Thats usually above 1200 RPM and a completely closed throttle position while slowing. So if that is the case, then I would suspect exhaust - maybe mufflers or cats.
If its not that, then it doesnt sound good.
I'm definitely not the one to diagnose engine problems based on sound, but I do know that Jake Raby claims that clicking/tapping sounds are often misdiagnosed as faulty lifters, but is actually a sign of bore scoring. Check out this video. Ironically, he is using a 2002 C4S as an example.

Does not sound good at all. Get underneath there and check all of the exhaust pipes, clamps, headers, manifolds for leaks or problems. When was the last time that thing had new plugs and coils? Last oil change and filter? Reason asking is it sounds like a tractor running...not smooth at all.
I'm no mechanic, but sounds exhaust related.
I wouldn't think bore scoring would get that loud, that fast, without experiencing other symptoms earlier.
Hoping it's something easily fixed!
Thanks for all the input!
To sum it up - it happened suddenly, no change in power. I tightened every nut/clamp I could, couldn't get to a few donuts. Just did a oil/filter change last week. I'm praying that it's just something with the exhaust, but to be safe I'll not drive it till he gets home and check it out.
Pull the oil filter.
Make sure you have something underneath to catch the few ounces of oil that will spill out.
Then look at the filter element itself.
If you put the filter on the engine and then lift the canister up, thats still the same end result and I wouldnt be worried. But thats without filling it with oil, or if you do fill with oil, it could spill out, or not be enough.
The advantage to putting the filter in the canister is to fill the filter/canister assembly with oil to the top, and that way, there a lot less air for the oil pump to deliver (and air is bad) when the car is restarted for the first time.
So if folks are taking out their filter for inspection, go ahead and put the new filter in place after cleaning and fill the assembly full of oil again.
While the case can be made to reuse an existing filter that looks pristine, I worry about any dirt or debris that may exist between the joint locations that could have been disturbed by taking the filter off. So I would be cleaning the canister clean, clean the threads, new o-ring, new filter, fill with fresh oil, and be done.
These filters are cheap and easy.
It would be a good time to upgrade to 200-cell cats.
Look at Fabspeed.
Or if you want used OEM, look at DC Automotive.

I haven't pulled the oil filter yet, bug I banged on the mufflers and cats and didn't hear any weird noises, seemed solid.
Had to do a bunch of other work this weekend, I'll try and get to the oil filter tomorrow evening.
So I went out to the car to disconnect the battery and leave the frunk open a tad bit and put a car cover on it...
Disconnected battery, and while I was waiting I decided, what the heck, let's do a DME reset.
So after about 10mins I reconnected the battery, turned key on for 1 min, off for 10 sec, started car, and voila! Its sounded great!
Went out for a test drive, drove it hard, it ran great!
Here's a video of it now...
Link to New video, sounds good.
While I was out test driving it, thanking the Lord that it's fixed, I get a sign from heaven! (Don't worry, I pulled over and took the pic!)
I'm still going to pull the oil filter this weekend and make sure all looks good, and when my mechanic gets back from vacation I'm going to have him put the p-puter on it and see if it shows anything. In the meantime I'll drive it some, not a lot till I'm sure it was nothing mechanical. And I'll probably order the coils, they're the original ones.
UPDATE: AMCPILOT (my mechanic):
1. checked the codes, nada
2. checked the oil filter, absolutely clean
3. replaced the plugs and coils, used the bigger BERU's
4. checked the exhaust system extensively
5. put it all back together, sounds, runs good, no codes
Drove it to work this morning, ran great. Hads lots more low end power. I left it in D and didn't shift manually, didn't need to, lot's more torque.
