I suspect the head unit is at fault but I don't know a proper way to test the speaker wiring w/o having another head unit available.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, new to the club! I've had my '01 996 C4 for a few weeks now but hadn't really used the stereo until today. No option code for upgraded stereo, so unless I am mistaken there is no dedicated amp for the speakers, i.e. the head unit powers them directly, correct? For more background, a previous owner claims to have swapped in OEM Bose speakers (haven't inspected to verify and I have plans to upgrade the speakers anyways) but otherwise he only added a bluetooth receiver wired into the stock AUX input. I pulled the head and see mostly untouched wiring except for what appears to be some electrical tape on the radio antenna connector and a couple clamp on taps on a couple power leads which I assume go to the bluetooth receiver (I will inspect and verify that once I dig into the dash and get access). Anyways wanted to troubleshoot an existing issue before replacing any parts. I noticed there is very low output only from front left dash speaker. I used the balance and fade controls to test out each speaker and discovered adjusting the balance between the rears works as expected, but not for the front speakers. When balanced all the way to the left, there is almost no output from the front speaker, but if I move the balance one notch to the right, so panned 7/8 notches to the left, the right front speaker emits nearly full volume audio and is significantly louder than the left. As I continue to move the balance left to right, the right front speaker doesn't really get much louder. This behavior occurs independent of any fade setting. I suspect the head unit is at fault but I don't know a proper way to test the speaker wiring w/o having another head unit available. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Look in the frunk, If there is an amp it will be visible on the firewall.
