The more conspicuous alternative is to find a new universal cc that is the same size pipe and cat diameter(roughly) and weld it in but preserve the original O2 bungs.,to test use the lap-joint pipe connectors. If it works, weld to look original(?)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My C2 996 is my daily driver and I live in California and have to pass smog. One of my Cats rattles so I need to replace it. I searched on line and bought a Magnaflow Cat. When my Indie tried to install it, he noticed it was 2 inches too short on the muffler side. The overall dimension is 30 inches which they say meets their spec. The attached picture shows the new one lined up on top of the old one. Difference is about 2 inches. Anyone else have this problem? Short of leaving the state I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

1. get a refund and find another manufacturer 2. Weld 2 more inches of pipe to make up the difference. 3. you said it yourself....

POST 3Original post

Paging kromdom...he had great success with magnaflow cats. Alternatively send them to Carnewal for a 200-cell cat internal element replacement. No more CEL.

POST 4Original post

Is the cat you purchased CARB-approved for use on your vehicle? If not, your car may still fail smog if the inspector notices that the cats have been modified. 5 years ago, I wouldn't have even mentioned this, but now that both of my "suspected polluters" have to go to STAR stations where they tend to be much more detail-oriented, I could see this actually happening... It looks like you're pretty deep into this, but for what new catalytic converters sell for, you want to be darn sure your new cats are street-legal. And yes, moving out of CA is starting to seem like a better and better idea. Eventually, I'm going to have to buy some "Hybrid Synergy Drive" stickers for the 996 so the environazis don't key my car.

POST 5Original post

Are these the same as what kromdom got in this thread? He didn't seem to have any problems. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...options-3.html

POST 6Original post

Welding a couple of inches of pipe to a cat that already looks non-stock might catch the smog tech's eye...is all I'm sayin'...

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 14652373

Yes, I agree. Btw, my reply was not directed to your post above.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Magnaflow says that I have purchased the correct, CARB compliant, Cat for my car. I agree that modifying the Cat won't work, but I think I can add a short piece to the muffler pipe to make it work. Sure would be easier to live in another state.....so many more choices.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 14651988

Magnaflow is the only aftermarket CARB approved manufacturer that sells replacement cats that are "direct fit." https://ssl.arb.ca.gov/PartsSearchTo...earchTool.aspx

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 14652588

The section of tubing you have to weld on is "after" the cat, thus it remains in its intended location. I would still bitch about it, so that they can issue an engineering change on their end.

POST 11Original post

There are also longer sleeves like these (you need to find the ones with the right dimensions) that may help. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-X-Exhaust...xX8jKq&vxp=mtr

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 14652637

idk brother. I live in NJ. All I have to worry about is my CEL being off and I pass emissions. My daily has had a cracked windshield for 3 years, modified exhaust (resonator removed) and I still glide through every time.

POST 13Original post

Yet you can't pump your own gas...go figure.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 14652770

Dont get me started on that. The amount of times I've had to clear check engine lights for gas cap codes is ridiculous. Started checking it myself every time I get gas.. OP, that sleeve that Ahsai posted may help.

POST 15Original post

Looks like these are 997 cats. These are shorter than the 996 cats. 61mm shorter on one side and 66mm on the other.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 14653862

Hi Gert! My 200-cell cats from you are still working fine after a few yrs with no CEL. I was thinking the same about 997 cats and thanks for confirming. Magnaflow must have copied the 997 cats thinking they are the same as the 996 ones. Just curious, do you think the 997 mufflers will make these match and can be installed on the 996 w/o mods?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 14653862

Looks like you're right Gert. According to the Magnaflow website they show the same part number for both the 996 and 997. OP should let Magnaflow (and distributor) know and return the parts.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ahsai, thank you for the sleeve suggestion. Great solution. I'm tempted to send the Cat back to Magnaflow but it does seem that they are among the few that make direct fit for 996 that are acceptable in California.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 14655017

But you've already determined they are not a direct fit.

POST 20Original post

Why don't you just buy a used OEM cat. I know it's not "legal" to sell or buy used cats.....but here are two of them in the classifieds in CA: https://rennlist.com/forums/parts-ma...ters-3-6l.html Here's one: https://rennlist.com/forums/parts-ma...60k-miles.html Here is a whole .1 exhaust in Chicago: https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/p...411851013.html I could almost buy that for you and ship you the cat.

POST 21Original post

LA, .2 exhaust: https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sf...407161672.html

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 14654159

Good to hear about the cat upgrade You could fit the 997 cat and mufflers on the later 996 . The positon of the tail pipes will be the main problem as the ones from the 997 sit a lot further to the middle.

POST 24Original post

There is a hack for this issue that we may be forced to consider. You find a generic cat with the correct size monolithic 'brick', peel open the 996 cat tin ,insert the new brick and weld up the old tin. Easier said than done until someone finds a source of the generic brick. The welding is the easy part. You Tube has the gory details of how this is done. Yes it is Smog-illegal but so are most of the options. Regardless of the petty rules, it would probably clean up the emissions to the point where it would pass Smog. You will have done your duty to the environment even if the others are horrified. The more conspicuous alternative is to find a new universal cc that is the same size pipe and cat diameter(roughly) and weld it in but preserve the original O2 bungs.,to test use the lap-joint pipe connectors. If it works, weld to look original(?) https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...t-options.html

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Found a used cat locally. If it doesn't rattle, I'll grab it. Thanks guys.

POST 26Original post

I have the same problem, (part number from Magnaflow 444067/444066). Align the 3X13 screws from the cat to the manifold, Don't tighten them yet Loosen the adjustable sleeves just enough to catch both end of the muffler and the cat. Tighten these screws (no.17) first. Then, slowly tighten the 3X13 screws. Just finished installing it over the weekend. .

POST 27Original post

forget about returning part to Magna Flow who sent me incorrect gaskets. I called and talked t a rep., left emails, messages. It has be three weeks now and they have not replied. Somehow, I knew this is going to happen, and the gasket is pretty cheap anyway. So ended up order extra sets.
