Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi - I purchased a 2004 996 a few years ago and brought it in for an IMS replacement. the mechanic went to do it, and said: engine already had the newer 3rd gen Porsche IMS bearing and updated rear main seal. My question is if this is possible? In what circumstances would this be possible? is there a chance that the mechanic (Porsche Specialist) would be mistaken? Should I be worried at all, or just consider myself lucky? thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

To install the latest bearing requires the engine case to be split to install, most likely the engine is a replacement engine from Porsche and will have the letters AT in the serial numbers. one thing i would do before putting it back together is check and remove the outside seal on the bearing. if everything else looks good, consider yourself lucky.

POST 4Original post

You need to check the engine number on the lower left side towards the bottom near the sump plate. Post it here - if it has AT in it - then it is a replacement engine. When Porsche replaced engines - they used the latest version M96. -Tom
