Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Repair + helicoil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair + helicoil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

But the guys are right, it's time to test things and then replace things.

If the oil test, sump, oil filter and bores are not good, then you have to make some decisions on how you are going to nurse the engine until you rebuild or swap a used engine or replace with a factory short block.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Recently did the IMS/RMS/AOS. Thought this pic might be interesting. Anyone want to guess at what we are seeing? Slow RMS leak + clutch dust?. Thoughts?
FWIW: Original bearing. 138k miles.
I wouldn't panic over any of it. Pretty good chance your 10 year old LN Retro bearing is in good shape. I just replaced my 10 year old LN Retro 2 years ago and it was in perfect shape after many track days and street miles. Nevertheless, at 10 years you gotta do it with a Retro.
But the guys are right, it's time to test things and then replace things. I am assuming that you are not a DIY guy just like me, so the most important thing is that you find an excellent porsche specific indy that knows the M9X engine. Importantly, don't go to just anybody to service your 996 because they are cheap. You gotta know and understand the engine.
Here are the steps I went thru in 2022 as I approached my second 10 year engine refresh. Did my first 10 year engine refresh in 2012. I bought my 2002 C2 in 2002.
Step One: Before spending big money on refreshing engine parts, you want to make sure the engine is in good shape first.
A. Start with the cheapest and easiest step first. Test your oil. Order an Oil Test kit from LN. Take a sample, send it in, and see whats in it. It will cost you $65 and will give you a preview of what you may find with (B) below. The results of (B) will confirm.
B. Next, have your indy drop your sump and and see whats in it. Also have them cut open the oil filter to see what's in it. Lastly, have them scope the Bores from the sump to see their condition.
If all is good, go to Step Two below amd spend money on refreshing engine parts. If the oil test, sump, oil filter and bores are not good, then you have to make some decisions on how you are going to nurse the engine until you rebuild or swap a used engine or replace with a factory short block.
Step Two: If resukts from Step One are good, proceed with refreshing engine parts. IMSB, RMS, AOS (UAOS) and Water Pump are critical to do immediately to mitigate the risk of catastrophic engine failure. But since the engine will be lowered, there are plenty of other things that you can do "while you are in there". Easy enough to give you a list if you want one.
Step One will cost you under $1,000 to have done.
Step Two will cost you between $5,000 to $10,000 depending on the number of "while you are in there" parts.
Good luck. Yep, it's not cheap, but the car is worth it.
