Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. My passenger seat back was vibrating visibly before I changed my motor mounts, and now its not doing that.

I got the OE with my previous 996 and now due to replace the motor and transmission mounts on my 986 Boxster.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think my 2001 996 motor mounts need replacing - after @ 102k it's about time. The tips are level and not too low but the exhausts with some sort of fister mod are touching the bottom inner lip of the bumper and rubbing. Is there an easy way to test them - if I place a jack under the sump with a wood 2x12 and apply a slight upward pressure should the motor rise somewhat with the exhaust system? Someone has also said that if the passenger seatback is vibrating at idle it is another sign that they need replacing. Any ideas appreciated
I think youve got a good handle on it. My passenger seat back was vibrating visibly before I changed my motor mounts, and now its not doing that.
I didnt pay attention to the height difference of the exhaust tips when raising my engine with a floor jack, but I imagine that a lot of movement would indicate failing mounts.
I compared my new and used mounts, and while they were visibly different, there wasnt a drastic difference like some of the pictures shared on Rennlist. Still, Im glad its been done for peace of mind, knowing I wont have to do it again for at least 5-10 years.
When did the exhaust go on? If the mounts were already sagging when the exhaust went on, the tips might be adjusted to them and not be a good indicator.
At 102k you definitely should replace them. I changed mine at 96k and 4 years later they are already sagging a bit. My original ones created a weird vibration when accelerating hard from highway speeds. The engine and trans were rattling around.
If the mounts are worn/shot, the rear of the car will feel like its sort of swinging through tight/twisty turns (water sloshing in a bucket feeling).
I suppose if you are keeping the car for a while, get the OEM. But if you don't really care, get the OE. I got the OE with my previous 996 and now due to replace the motor and transmission mounts on my 986 Boxster. I'm looking to get OE this time around since the car sees the track regularly.
Follow up on what you plan on doing on your before and after. You'll notice a difference, and a positive one at that!
I planned on doing this myself this weekend. The hitch is that the big box of stuff I ordered from Pelican did not include the mounts (which were the central part of my order) for some reason. Tracking those down today.
