Topping off oil level with a different brand vs running low is a no brainer for m96.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Currently driving my 2003 996 from New York to Miami, in the event that I need to add some oil to my car what alternative oils should I use if DT40 is not available? Its burned nearly a quart in the last 1000 miles of highway driving.
Thanks!
Won't help this time, but I always buy a couple of extra quarts/liters for each oil change and make sure there is a full quart waiting in the frunk...just in case. My car doesn't use oil but it's nice to have spares.
Same here. Porsche makes a cool leather case that holds a quart/liter. It was only $20.00 back in 2017 but who knows what it costs now.
It has Velcro on the bag so it sticks to the carpet.
I'm pretty sure you can just add another quart of similar weight oil, motul exces or liquimoly long life 5w40, it will make your used oil analysis tough, but if you tell them you added another type of oil, those folks are capable of still getting a good read. Contamination won't be caused using a different oil. Do an oil change early after mixing if you are worried.
If you are already burning that much oil there's no harm in mixing. Good oil is good oil right? People add additives all the time and that will have a far greater effect than adding different brand of oil.
How many miles on your whip? My car has 105k and burns no oil at all. I'm not picking on your car just curious. Is their a leak? Is oil burning? I didn't know oil consumption was common in other water cooled Porsches? I hear the 993 and older cars do burn more oil and can be prone to leak as well, but I thought only bore scored m96 engines burn oil and all can leak through the rms. Good luck and have a good drive!
Give Driven a call. They can tell you what oil will play well with DT40.

Bottom line here,
don't run low on oil level
j
ust because you don't have the exact same oil to top off with during a 1500mile trip.
In this day and age there are Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, Riley's, etc, in almost every town. Stop and get some synthetic X-40 or x-50 weight oil and top off as soon as possible. M96 don't like sucking air from low oil level blasting down I95 at high speed hanging a long sweeper.
Topping off oil level with a different brand vs running low is a no brainer for m96. Most all the current quality oils are compatible now a days. When you change oil types there is always a qt or 2 left in engine and its lines/coolers/heads/galleries/ims/ etc...
Thank you for all the replies and thanks for offering a quart.
I made it to Miami with no problem. Luckily I left Maine with 1 extra quart of Driven and I used up all of that, but didnt need any more. I thought it was burning more than it actually was. Looks like it burned about 3/4qt in 1,800 miles
