Is there a procedure for the non-electrically inclined to test the HVAC controls or that motor before ordering parts?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It all started out easy enough - cleaned up all the doors, put plugs on everything but when I went to test it, I noticed that the door in by the heater core did not move. I pulled the actuator arm off and the door moves freely, so I took the motor off and when I hit the defrost button, it moved a tiny bit and then twitched. So, I got a used one from ebay, hooked it up and voila - full range of motion. So put it all back together but saw that the heater core door only moved about 1/8". I couldn't find any binding and the arm only seemed to connect one way to the blend door. So I pulled the new motor off and ran it again and now it's twitching just like the old one and won't go through the full range of motion any more. Since both motors are behaving the same way, I'm thinking I either have bad luck with used parts or the HVAC controls are jacked up and the unit needs to be replaced. Is there a procedure for the non-electrically inclined to test the HVAC controls or that motor before ordering parts? I have a Durametric but am still learning how to use it. For the attached video I took the oldest unit apart to see what was actually going on. I removed the intermediate gear from the motor to the blend door arm and see the motor either moves a lot or advances one tooth at a time - which is what I'm seeing with the twitching. In the video the defroster is on, but the behavior is the same when it's off - the motor never stops, never changes direction, just randomly moves or moves one cog at a time. Sorry for the wiggly camera - was trying to run controls, hold motor and phone at the same time. Thank you in advance.
