Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

When I disconnected the outer tie rod ball joint from wheel carrier, the racks side of the inner joint was so loose it was flapping there.

I had the same symptom, and I changed literally everything and it went away.

The consensus has been to replace drop links, which I did.

If it isnt anything significant or dangerous I can live with it until I replace the suspension at some point, maybe after the new year with M030.

Lot's of posts about running lower pressures which I now do.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I attached a video. I just got the car but when driving it home through CT/NY where the roads are bad I hit a not so great but common large bump. I think this noise started after that, but I cant be 100% certain cause the car is new to me.
This noise is like a hallow shutter, not quite a dense knock or thud sound. Definitely coming from the front over small bumps in the road, and only under 35mph. Zero sound over bumps at higher speeds. Zero sound when steering or swerving or braking.
I am viewing this thread with great interest. I have the same symptoms and similar noise. The consensus has been to replace drop links, which I did. Same thing. No change in sound. My sound only happens after the car has been driven approximately 30 minutes. I have tried several times with prybars to isolate the sound both hot and cold with no luck.
The only thing that has reduced it is reducing tire pressures. I reduced tire pressures as I was running them exactly as is listed on the car. Lot's of posts about running lower pressures which I now do.
My car is also a 2003 996 with less than 50000 miles.
On the one hand this is reassuring lol, but on the other it isnt. If you know what I mean!

I had the same symptom, and I changed literally everything and it went away. Of those, the most worn parts were the inner tie rods - NOT the outer ones. And, one of the drop links.
Ive heard the inner tie rod tends to loosen up with heat because its the first thing connected to the steering rack which can also heat up - that would be your 30min minimum driving. When I disconnected the outer tie rod ball joint from wheel carrier, the racks side of the inner joint was so loose it was flapping there. I could not test it any other way.
I did Ohlins coilovers but stock components for everything else - control arms, toe arms, drop links, sway bar bushings, etc.
You could go GT3 everything but it was too expensive for me. The FCP kits felt more worth it.
Contact Gert at carnewal.com - hes a wealth of knowledge on the options. I considered it but M030 prices skyrocketed so I just stretched for the Ohlins instead.
