Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Those kits aren’t cheap, but once installed the top fits like factory.

I shopped around and found some used brackets and they were the bayonet style.

I found a good used hard top and the mounting brackets.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Group, looking for clarification
1. Can a 996 that did not come with a hardtop simply buy one and have it mount without modification?
2. If no then what is needed to fit the hardtop?
3. Will a Gen 1 hardtop fit a Gen 2 car?
Thank you
Yes, a 996 can fit a hardtop, even if not purchased by the dealership. its prewired for it, except for the rear-defroster button on your dash, and possibly the anchors.
the anchors are not designated by .1 or .2 - in 2001 they upgraded the anchors from a screw-in style , to a bayonet style. it was retrofitted to most 911 by the dealership to remedy a few noise issues as well as scratching of the paint when people screwed it in too tight.
its likely that yours is the bayonnet style, and thats what you want, but if needed you can purchase the retrofit pieces for probably about 200$
You’ll want to double-check if your car had the
hardtop delete
option in its original spec.
If it didn’t, then yes, you can just buy a hardtop and it will mount directly without modification.
If it did have the delete, you’ll need to purchase a
retrofit kit
(anchors and wiring). Those kits aren’t cheap, but once installed the top fits like factory.
Mine was spec'd with option 750 Delete Cab. Hardtop but it had all the correct mounting hardware. You just need to adjust it once you get it in place:
From the Cabriolet service manual:
This is backwards - the original design is the problematic 1/4-turn "Bayonet" style. The "Screw in" style was introduced in 2004 or 2005 and is significantly better (though slightly less convenient).
Yes. I did just this. My car is a 04 c4s Cabrio , from factory its hard top delete. I found a good used hard top and the mounting brackets. Did take a little fiddling to get the wires hooked up for the defroster, but eventually got it set up. I believe a well worth adventure.
I shopped around and found some used brackets and they were the bayonet style. The hard top will come with the male end of the brackets either screw or bayonet style. I recommend changing to the newer screw type brackets, gives a miore solid connection. Less rattle, more adjustment.
there are posts and videos on how to do it all.
