The car hasn’t used a drop of oil over the last 2,000km, so I’m hoping it’s just cosmetic.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I crawled under my 996.2 C2 tonight after hearing a scraping noise coming out of the driveway—turns out I’ve lightly scratched the sump. Annoying, but not catastrophic. While I was down there, I noticed the scavenge pump on bank 2 (right side) is dirty. I couldn’t inspect further up—no lift, and I won’t risk getting under the car with a scissor jack. For those with more experience: Would you say the grime is likely from the o-ring, or should I be looking higher up for the source? I’ve got a 1,000km drive coming up next week. The car hasn’t used a drop of oil over the last 2,000km, so I’m hoping it’s just cosmetic. Also, can anyone confirm if the pump orientation looks correct? The engine was rebuilt by the previous owner, and while many components—including the scavenge pumps—were reused, I’m not 100% sure everything was reinstalled properly. I’ve watched a few YouTube videos, but I’m still unclear on the correct alignment. Thought I’d ask the folks who actually wrench on these cars. Thanks in advance! The photo is from under the car looking up.

Pump's fitted correctly. The oil might be from a check valve at the top of the cilinder head, straight above the pump. I say might, as I'm unsure the 996.2 still had this like the 996.1 did, or not.
