Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
What dporto said, it's probably the top mount of the strut.

Leading evidence: 'top mount of the strut' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'top mount of the strut' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check top mount' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Check the top mounts - it's very possible that the rubber surround is cracked all the way through.

This is what mine looked like before I replaced them about 8 years ago.If you are in there I would replaced the bearings at the top too.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a C4S 2004 996. I have noticed a slight clunking noise in my front drivers side suspension. Mainly pulling away from a standstill. I can replicate it by lightly bouncing up and down on the front fender. (Only on drivers side). I removed the wheel and could not see any loose ball joints or loose nuts.
At high speeds in straight lines there are no issues. Go over bumps in the road and the front end feels light and bounces around. As if the alignment is out. I'm having to steer to compensate. Also going around a light corner at speed (bend in highway) it also feels unsecure. Not like the car is about to go off the road, just not a solid stance. It is very difficult to explain.
I had the alignment done 1500 miles ago and no hard knocks in the front end to knock it out of alignment.
I'm reading a lot about control arms, etc.... wearing out but cannot locate the noise or movement in joints, even with a stethoscope. Could this be the shock?
Any thoughts or tips on how to locate this issue?
Check the top mounts - it's very possible that the rubber surround is cracked all the way through. The pita is that you've got to remove the top nut and washer to see the rubber part of the mount...
Good luck
Does it happens to you that when you run over a road joint, it looks like if the car jumps side?
If yes, I would bet that you have to change your shocks? (how many mails do they have?)
Thanks for the prompt responses.
Yes it is like a jumping side to side motion when I go over cracks in the road. this is mainly at a >60MPH when I notice it more.
As for checking the top mount. Is it just a case of removing the nut and washer? Or is it more complex? Want to make sure the strut isn't going to shoot out, or be impossible to reassemble.
Removing the nut and washer is easier said than done. Best to use an air ratchet gun because there is no way to hold the strut piston without it spinning. Probably is a worn supporting mount. See diagram here

i had this happen on my 99 on the right front corner and it was a combination of a bad strut, bad tie rod end on that side and bad lower control arm (where the lower ball joint is.) just like you did, if I pushed it down suddenly and lifted it up, it would make the clunking noise. After thinking about it....I think at one time, that corner got dunked in deep water, causing the rubber seals to get water and dirt in them which hastened their wear. The other 3 corners didnt have this problem.
Do your self a favor and start replacing all the rubber in the front end, its old. The aftermarket parts r very affordable and may just prevent u from bouncing into a ditch.
Theres a special strut tool/socket you can get that lets you pass a hex key through (to hold the strut shaft) while loosening the top nut. I ground two sides off a 24mm socket so I could hold it with an adjustable wrench while passing the 8mm hex key through the socket...
ECS(Schwaben) sells one some that’s not too expensive.

I have the one for BMWs.
I don’t have one that fits Porsche’s.
My impact gun can take it off for me without any issues.
I've gone for new Strut mounts (L&R), New Bilstein B6, Bearing plates, Stops and boots. Once the wife forgets I bought all of this, I'll do the control arms and other suspension bits over the winter.
Can someone point me in the right direction to get the front suspension torque settings?
I've been searching on line and not finding what I need.
Thanks
The Knowledge Gruppe manual is not in digital format.
I didn't know that it had suspension torque numbers.
I thought it was just for engines.
I own one but haven't looked at it in a while.
I think my Bentley manual has torque specs for suspension.
I'll look for the specs in the Bentley manual when I get home tonight...if I don't forget.
Update:
Strut mounts were gone, so too the front struts. I got some new parts and installed it all together. One tool which I found a great help was this torque wrench adapter. - Images below. Really helped torque those hard to reach bolts.
I also included some screen shots of the torque settings which I eventually found. I hope someone else finds them useful.
Thanks everyone for your help. Now to get the front end aligned.
Car
I'd think you could just use a crows foot with your torque wrench no? It looks like the adapter with a full size wrench would be tough to use in all but the most open spaces...In any case, I'm glad to hear you got your suspension worked out!
