Drill a hole in each corner then use a dremel tool cut wheel to cut the straights.....works great.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am considering a center radiator kit for my 996.2 Aero C2 m/t. Other than the top smile GT3 vent on top of bumper, how can the air flow through the center radiator properly? Thanks for any help or ideas David D

POST 2Original post

Some people don't also install the duct for the center rad, which is poor in my opinion. The duct forces the air through the rad, instead of letting it bypass.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are you referring to the duct that funnels the air in to the radiator? I am getting that as part of the kit. In addition the correct Black trim that goes behind the front bumper cover, which has the center portion open, instead of blocked off as my factory Aero Bumper. I really don't care for the top vent, but I wonder how efficient can the center radiator be, if the air cannot free flow.

POST 4Original post

Mine exists under the car behind the center radiator when I had a 3.4 in it. Should be OK...Though I have been considering through the top. Don't think I need to though with my new 3.8 since I just put in much bigger turbo radiators so I will have plenty of cooling.

POST 5Original post

Yep, I meant the duct/trim/shroud (whatever it is called) that fits between the grill and the rad.

POST 6Original post

On the C2 the air flow through the center radiator goes down under the car, versus up through the top of the bumper cover as happens on the GT3. If you look at the underbody liner (black plastic panel) at the front of the car you should notice several rectangular cutouts; that's where the hot air exiting the center radiator flows out. Like Cuda and others have stated, the radiator works best if you install the plastic shroud to conduct the incoming air squarely into the center radiator (no bypassing). One thing to note: since the air flows through the center radiator only when the car is moving (no fans), you may see the water temps actually rise a bit higher in slow or stop/go traffic with the third radiator in place. Once the car's rolling along, however, the temps drop back to normal pretty quickly and will stay "normal" much longer under hard driving and/or hot days.

POST 7Original post

I read somewhere that the top bumper vent on the later GT cars is for aerodynamics not better radiator airflow. Don't quote me, no idea where I read it.

That is what I was hoping to hear. The point about stop and go driving, I didn't realize. So far I have purchased, 3 gallons of Porsche coolant, water, pump w/new bolts, Low Temp Thermostat housing w/ new bolts, Rennline grill mesh for front bumper, New Coolant tank, "fitting" on AOS line that is aluminum replacement for plastic factory unit. To buy some new hoses and clamps and possibly center radiator kit. Car is daily driver, with occasional track days. I live in upstate NY, so prolonged hot sunny days are non-existent. I have no leaks, and never over heated or ran warm. I have never added coolant in the four years and 30,000 miles that I have owned it. Previous owner had coolant flush at Porsche dealer a year before I purchased at 36,000 All of this is PM, jeepers, I started out just wanting to flush coolant, and now it is going to be pushing $2000, before all is said and done

I saw something like that as well, is was meant as down force, that is what lead me to question if I need smile vent, which I really don't want

POST 10Original post

Yes the center rad vents from below. Your Aero front bumper will have to have 4 square holes taken out of it to allow it to vent. If you look at the underside bumper there are outlines for the cutouts. Mask off the bumper around the outlines and use a marker to draw the outline....this will protect your paint. Drill a hole in each corner then use a dremel tool cut wheel to cut the straights.....works great.

Thank you for that how to, I remember seeing those outlines. As some as it warms up a little, I will pulling off front bumper to start the process. Do most people replace the drain plug and washer at bottom of the engine block?

My MK1 vents under as well - and I have the center rad installed. I'll have more info about my 3.8 in a couple of weeks.... It's going to be interesting to see how your 3.8 transplant performs and how my 3.8 stroker does. I have a friend locally with your same car (3.8 from a 997S) that's a track car.... its QUICK.
