It's obvious that the poor rep of the M96 motor has turned out to be a good thing for people that desire the 911 driving experience at the price of a used Honda.

I also replaced the factory radio with a Pioneer one that has Nav, Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and sounds great.

Just changed my oil for the first time and I noticed lots of metal and plastic parts.

Fact 2: Registering a specialty car involves visits to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Highway Patrol (to verify that the car is not stolen and to assign the new VIN), the Bureau of Automotive Repair (they do a smog inspection and then declare the car smog exempt.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Since I joined RL, this is what I've learned so far:
1. IMS failure is real... and amplified in the minds of every 996 and 997.1 owner
2. Intermix is not a fancy drink served in the Porsche lounge.
3. The M96 engines love to make tickin' sounds like time bombs
4. The favorite color of the Porsche interior designer is Graphite Grey
5. The M96 seems to be quickly affected by the use of crack
6. AOS is not a '70s rock band that loves to overuse fog machines
7. Porsche designed the electric rear hood and frunk locking mechanisms to help improve the towing industry
8. The Becker radio company's favorite song is the "Sound of Silence"
9. Silver horn crest sightings are as rare as Sasquatch and they're as valuable as the hope diamond
10. The engineer that created the Porsche convertible top system was enthused by the principle of "Glass half full, glass half empty"; therefore, he created the midpoint breaking mechanism.
11. eGas is not a competitor to "Gas-X"
12. One indicator that the Porsche 911 is a male, is the fact that it loves to take a leak in public.... And give off very impressive noises from the rear.
13. Two guys in a Cabriolet are no different than two guys in a Miata
14. The Porsche designer that came up with the special edition Miami Dolphins Nephrite and Orange colored 996 was forced to watch every game in the last 15 losing seasons
15. Porsche immobilizer technology not only keeps the thieves from driving off, but also the owners and Porsche too.
16. Porsche discourages having backup Keyfobs. They say it's because they want to stay in touch with their owners.
17. A "roller" is not a chainsmoker or gambler
18. KrazyK is rated top DIY POS engineer and "loved" by everyone on RL
19. 5CHN3LL should have been a English Professor, radio relationship talkshow counselor (a.k.a Dr. Chanel Show) and/or synth player for DEVO
20. Kalash is a Russan that loves women, malt liquor (hehehe), dumplings, and going shirtless (most of the time.)
21. Slakker is a mod-maniac that believes the '99 model 996 is the ONLY 996.
22. KC Attorney loves the NA 996 peeps better than the TT 996 peeps even though we all know what he drives.
23. CUDA911 is a 21 year old stuck in the body of a 50 year old.
24. Groovilla has lived in the same house for most of his life and has owned more Porsches than Ferdinand himself.
25. Gonzo is a speed demon known to do 51 in a 40. Darn speed cameras!
26. Ahsai is the Porsche Gandhi
27. Martin is trying his best to show the polish love, but can't find the words.
28. Sneaky Pete is trying to find the Martin love, but won't ever since he eye'd his wife.
29. Alpine is the immobilizer/code expert. Wikileaks and the Russians have nothing on him. Hillary even asked for email help recently.
30. Jake Raby is a modern genius that knows how to correctly spell the word "DAWG"
I could go on and on, but what have YOU learned since joining RL?
31. A Porsche 996 is the equivalent of a street vacuum cleaner (hint - clean your radiators).
32. You can only go really really fast if your wheel crests align with your valve stems.
33. "Scoring" is not the act of putting a musical track to a movie, nor making a point(s) in a sports game, nor hooking up with a hottie.
Scoring's bad, mmmmkay.
As far as car forums go, 996 section of Rennlist is awesome. It is 90% messing around, with 10% being serious enough to address most of the DIY issues and help people.
I feel that Ocean's and Hang Over movies are a good representation of what would happen when critical mass of 996 Rennlist section gets together in real life.
40. DT Miller, KC and Cuda will be hanging out on this thread competing to be the first one to post #10,000...
PS...nice job B3. And #12 was awesome!!!
Things I done learnt here:
996 owners are a weird bunch of mother****ers. I have found My People.
Pace yourself - otherwise, you wind up like John Ireland.
Many Porsche owners are desperate to differentiate themselves and/or prove why their Porsche is better than other Porsches. Some of the posts in 993 and 997 make me ashamed to own a Porsche.
996 and 914 guys give zero f**ks about what most people think.
The 986 and the 996 are incredibly easy re: standard maintenance.
It's a misconception that all people from Canadia are friendly.
I have a third ********.
Some people in this forum do not read lists in their entirety.
I don't have any Chrysler K cars, let along 30 of them. I will admit that they are odd though and probably only worth 150 bucks.
I've learned that my 996 will grenade its motor at any given moment for any number of different reasons (IMS, OAS, cracked head, etc).
I'm going to drive the **** out of it anyway because it's just so damn fun to drive.
And if it does blow up then I'll do an LS swap.
66. When driving, your 996 starts to make a sound like a 3000 pound maraca, pull over immediately, turn the car off, crawl in the ditch, and suck your thumb while you wait for the tow truck.
Jamie, if 5CHN3LL picks on you, it usually means he likes you. But he was just messing with your "150" comment. You forgot to put the K after the number. And so he was joking that his car was worth more than just $150.
quote... "My car is worth way more than $150 - so back the f*** off."
* Unless you're KK. I thought that guy was a sloppy sack of d**ks even before he elected to dry-f**k the poor dude who bought his car. I wouldn't **** on that guy if he was on fire. I'd kick him right in a bleeding hemorrhoid if I had half a chance. With crampons. KK, if you ever wind up pink-socked, I hope you accidentally sit in crushed glass.
But yeah, otherwise I'm a happy-go-lucky curmudgeon. With a hunnert-and-fitty-dollar-car damn you Turbojamie.
#73 - There are some incredibly smart people here who are more than willing to share their knowledge.
#74 - The Good Week thread is a 4 or 5 way circle jerk.
..I've learned a lot of real good info on here, which has saved me a lot of money. and I've learned a lot of real bad info on here that occasionally keeps me up at night, without the vodka...
and met and traded with a lot of nice folks...
0. 996s, especially 1998-1999 C2 Mt6 coupes, will eventually surpass 1962 Ferrari GTOs as a collectable classic (good thing 0 is imaginary... and real... and complex... never mind - but they're great driver's cars anyway).
Are you joking? What better thing is there to argue about. To wit:
A quick illustration:
Keeping the above in mind, the next time you purchase a Porsche, consider the following semantics:
And finally, to quote the inimitable Aldous Huxley:
Let's not argue semantics. Pshaww.....

One undergrad semester (bachelor's in English - surprise) I was taking both semantics and phonology. I was talking to my mom on the phone and told her which classes I was taking that year...there was this long pause, and she says (feigning innocence) "you're learning to diagnose illness by feeling bumps on people's heads?"
No, mom. Phonology, not phrenology.
My mom was a punk.
I am not sufficiently worthy to add anything new to this thread, but I will say this! I memorized it as follows...
two flashes = bye bye
one flash = hi
don't judge!!
I learned I'm glad the 996 does not have integrated wireless networking:
Tesla Patches Cars Against Wi-Fi 'Braking' Attack
Electric car manufacturer Tesla has updated its firmware after researchers in China remotely turned on a vehicle's windshield wipers, opened the trunk and applied the brakes in new Model S sedans.
I have a hard enough keeping all of my employees' computers and our servers hardened and exploit-resistant; I don't need a car I have to worry about patching.
Say, if Apple DOES start making cars, will they pull the same sh*t they do with their computers? "Oh, you want the latest version of CarOS? Sorry, your iCar 5.0 is no longer supported. You'll need to buy a new iCar 7.1 or newer to continue receiving CarOS updates."
When perspective 996 owners are considering ownership:
70% of the 996 owners (without a fix/solution) or IMS failure issues tells them that IMS failure is relatively not as big of an issue when considering 10% failure.
10% of the 996 owners with IMS failure tells them to be careful and usually their story of the money issues involved.
The other 20% that handled the problem with a preventive solution are laughing there a## off at both of them knowing that the 70% are standing in the same line the 10% were in, they just haven't been let into the club yet!
The Rennlist poll shows 10% (Approx.) failure with 90% (Approx.) showing no failure. Estimating a 20% of the 90% having dealt with the issue in a somewhat permanent fix/solution preventative manner before encountering a failure judging by posters in threads on the topic.
Just my observation - not meant in a disparaging way to the 996 as I am a owner myself.
I respect your opinion as I respect anyone's opinion whether I agree with it or not. Please do not take this in a aggressive manner, in no way is it intended to be.
What is the criteria for a poll to have "meaning" to you? Please note this was a poll conducted by a highly regarded Porsche site with nearly 800 Porsche owners expressing their experience with presumptively no shenanigans in play. Although no poll shows precise accuracy, I do believe the results would not be so far off to negate the validity of my opinion.
A poll on an internet forum for a specific car is fundamentally not representative of the population as a whole. People tend to go to car forums to find solutions to a problem; while not all of those problems are going to be IMS bearings, some of them are. You wouldn't assume that a poll of 1,000 people on an alcoholics anonymous site is reflective of the drinking habits of the entire population.
A sample size of 800 in an overall population of 175,000 is tiny; less than one half of one percent. While there are certainly plenty of studies based on a small sampling of a very large population, it's not realistic to think that Rennlist members are representative of the population as a whole. This is a technical forum; a place where people come for answers to problems. I think you'll agree that you are much less likely to go online and join a forum for a product that works perfectly and for which you have absolutely no questions or complaints.
It's also worth pointing out that the definition of IMS failure has changed over time. Today, a speck of IMS material in your filter is now considered a failure; in the past, IMSB failure meant a crumpled intermediate shaft and a few quarts of oil on the street.
We have to base our decisions on
something
; the information available here is far better than nothing at all. However, what we have here is fundamentally subjective; it's not "data." MAYBE if you squint at it you could rationalize calling it data-ish...but that's a stretch.
Yeah, we turned this thread into an IMSB thread.
Ooh, what have I learned since joining Rennlist?
869. All threads in the 996 forum are IMSB threads just waitin' to happen.
Fair point, and well taken.
Considering your explanation, would my opinion that is based on "Some Validly of data" be considered over an opposing view based on "No produced data"?
Couldn't stop laughing as I read thru all these posts, been Renlister for a year or so don't post very often but log on almost evrey day. Loved be3freaks list, almost read it to the end. Love Renlsit almost as much as I love my 1999 996
Well, there I have it! Brilliantly put. I stand corrected and I apologize for taken up your time. Please resume your topic of Boobies, Photo shopped pics of other members, etc. This discussion I started has no place among those other insightful discussions.

OK, I drew up this simple IMSB analysis decision tree a couple years ago, but we have enough newbies that I think it's worth reposting.
Simply start at upper right "Sage" = Jake, and follow the logical pathway to lower left "Increased Physical Durability." Note that most pathways also lead through the most-important "WTF" stage.
Now, if we take the output, and run it through a simple "before" and "after" IMSB replacement analysis, we can arrive at a significantly enhanced result:
Hi All. I'm a recent owner of a 2002 Carrera Cabrio, silver on blue. Car has only 36000 miles on and so far I love it. I have been lurking here for a month since I purchased the car and learned a lot about my car. For example, I now know about the IML failure and it's my plan to address this when I put the car away this winter. Not sure how yet but there's a fix that doesn't require engine removal and replaces the ball bearing shaft with a smooth bearing and an oil line for lubrication. Might go this route. I also replaced the factory radio with a Pioneer one that has Nav, Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and sounds great. I didn't put a sub since there is no really good place to put one. I also fixed the driver's window not dropping that 1/4" when opening the door thanks to this forum and I replaced the worn shifter **** with one from Renn, the satin finish ball one. Loving that too! I hope to be a contributing member though I typically post only from time to time. This is a really active forum so I will be watching.
Great to start the day with an insult from Gnat.
If it's any consolation, b3freak didn't make the list either! hahaha!
Actually, in all truthfulness, I had planned to add YOU gnat in addition to others like DTMiller, Tom, Hurdi, etc.!
Maybe call it the
addendummies
??!! hahahaha!
Sorry fat fingers, IMS Failure is what I meant. Well documented here. Also, the window on the doors is supposed to drop about 1/4" - 1/2" to allow clearance from the roof frame when closing. There are microswitches in the door that control this feature as well as the window regulator itself. In my case it was the window regulator. Works great now. I was able to manually push the window down so it would clear on closing and it would return to the fully closed position automatically but if I forgot, the window would slam against the roof frame and I was worried that it might break at some time causing more problems.
Well I found a local recommended installer for the "IMS Solution". Claims to be a permanent fix and the guy says he's done many and so far no issues. I'm gonna do it because I want this to be a long term purchase.
He quoted me a max of $2300.00 Seems fair to me based on what they do. They do the install but once in there they also replace some additional seals (he wasn't specific which) as well as a Mobil 1 oil change. Takes about 2 days for the job.
1120: Newbies are gullible and impressionable ... and, usually overeager to want to fit in with the RL elite. Some have self esteem issues and quickly go nuclear if you challenge their thinking or humiliate them on the forum. Some live to view another one of Cuda's eyebleach hotties. Most don't understand 5CH3NLL and never will and wonder why he points out that their textin' style jive doesn't live up to American English standards. Some try to pull the technical wool over Gnat's eyes with some of their Craigslist write-ups, but NEVER succeed. John Ireland usually directs them to take their car, bank account, and Vaseline to Porsche exclusive service centers because anything less than the best is worthless. Slakker wants to know if their car has the dual row bearings like his 1999 model, if not, they should cancel their RL account or set up an appointment with Flat 6. Hurdi usually gives them semantics that only make sense to him. DTMiller is sometimes thought to be the beer equivalent of DT40 oil. Sometimes they think Gonzo911 has something to do with Jim Hensen's Muppet RaceMania and that Woody has a "thang" for Buzz Lightyear. ok, i'll stop now.
Well bless your heart. That was a nice screed, but you still left out some of the more notable members (unless we want to grade this one in isolation, then you left out a lot!).
^ For those of you unfamiliar with regional linguistics in American english, "bless your heart" is southern standard American english for "go f**k yourself."
1121. If a sweet southern lady ever says, "well, bless your heart," what she means is "I hope this a$$clown dies in a fire after getting gangbanged by a horde of robots wielding glass-encrusted pneumatic dong-arms."
Because it wouldn't be AT ALL ladylike to say "dong-arms" in a genteel conversation.
Artist's rendering of dong-arm robot:

Thanks DT. Huge improvement over the last avatar - really no comparison. The guards red is more, well, guards redier.
(And, for 2 extra brownie points, you even finished it before that countdown timer expired)
There are a lot of red cars on the road, let's face it. What? It's the truth.
But the red Porsches are very, very beautiful cars. Fantastic cars. Incredible driving experience. The good people of Stuttgart are tremendous workers and I applaud them.
So let's not forget, there are red cars and there are red Porsches. Choose wisely, okay?
I used to love the marketing of Ferrari with their new cars.
They'd say, "You can get your new Ferrari in any color you like as long as it's
Rosso Corsa
."
It actually took me a few seconds to figure out what the heck you were doing there!!!
To be clear...I got a very nice warning but managed to avoid vacay because, presumably, that pic is so darn hot!
I think gnat is obsessed with it personally...
To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering one must not love. But then one suffers from not loving. Therefore, to love is to suffer; not to love is to suffer; to suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy, then, is to suffer, but suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore, to be happy one must love or love to suffer or suffer from too much happiness.
In any case, your IMSB is putting on a clown costume and plotting your demise. Stay vigilant.
Or as Rumsfeld said...
There are things you know you know and things you know you don't know and things you don't know you know and things you don't know you don't know. And then ther is the 996 engine.
Today's RL learnt:
People "that leave" Rennlist actually don't really leave at all, but show up with *new* accounts to harass and prove their sociopathic ways are actually true.
The rubberized paint that Porsche uses to cover the interior center console, seat backs, and dash surround is the same "scratch-off" paint used on Lottery tickets. Go figure.
Hey! There is NO way I could have survived the last 15 years without those leather vent slats!
Jesus, you people have no standards of taste around here!
(really though, the leather slates are quite nice)
Porsches "Full Leather Package" (code P55) doesn't really mean the 996 will be "full" of leather, but probably means more leather than the standard base model 996. In fact, Porsche has probably more than a 100 additional leather options above the so-called "Full Leather Package". Get this... you can get a "Key Pouch in colored leather" (CPU) or even the "Fuse box trimmed in leather" (CUJ). This one really gets me... "PCM packaged in leather" (CUR). How in hell do you leather Porsche's PCM??? Snake oil or what?!
Interestingly, a Snake Oil product was where Porsche originally obtained its "no substitute" slogan.
Also, many don't realize that Joe Gibbs was originally marketed as this, but sales were slow:
Now, for some real snake oil, try marketing this radiator treatment to the 356 crowd:
Our's has 2 different "full" leather packages in it, plus a couple of additional leather options to boot. There is very little not covered in leather in the car.
It's the frame that gets a layer of leather applied to it.
I spent years not understanding why people complain about the 996 interior. It isn't the same level as a Jag from the same era, but it's a nice interior that has held up amazingly well.
Then I finally sat in a 996 that didn't even have leather seat surfaces. Now I get it
So I'd say it's only possible to consider it Snake Oil if you haven't yet experienced both extremes.
15.5 years in and I'm glad we spent the equivalent of a new mid-range Golf on the leather options.
It was a not-very-nice post, and - though this sounds a little paranoid - "
They're watching...they're watching everything we do
."
It would be easier to hide indiscretions if delete was enabled here. I know of at least one Texan who would have found that useful.
Hi, Gretch. Nothing to see here. *whistles and walks away*
What I've learned so far?
1xxx0x75. After reading on these forums for months, I showed up to my mechanic at least 3 times with a 'sure failure any minute now!!!' just to be explained that all is still good.
I do swear though it still makes funky noises. Something is gonna break any second now.
1xxx0x76. Once you drive in LA, the ****ty road surfaces make any interior become a rattle park. Everything now rattles, and I've got tons to fix, though neither a garage nor the necessary knowledge yet.
1xxx0x77. Other P-car drivers in the city don't care about your car, neither do most others. Once you're out in the hills on the weekends, greetings galore, though. Nice.
Well, thanks for this forum. It's helped a lot, and given me a few nightmares.
I learned that BMW is working its way through oil companies like Kalashnikov through bunnies at the playboy mansion; it was strange to see a commercial for Pennzoil featuring BMW track cars. I didn't even know BMW dumped Mobil for Castrol before dumping Castrol for Pennzoil.
Kalash: Please do not gum up the grotto. Thx.
Even if you're cruising with a group of "normal cars" at only 14 mph over, the Cops will pick you out among the rest and make you an example of you. And let you sit on the side of the highway as a poster boy that says, "speeding is not a good thing boys and girls, look where it got this idiot!".
"Ya can't hide money!"
That's what my neighbors love to shout across the parking lot when I see them in town. Rural area, so they get "My used Porsche cost half of what your Z71 Silverado cost, smarta**". The puzzled looks are priceless. I've learned ya can't hide ignorance..
I get the same thing all the time and I usually respond with something like... "I bought the Porsche for less than most people pay for their Corollas!"
Funny how people don't know one Porsche from the other. My neighbor thought my 996 was brand new. He flipped out when I told him it was 13 years old.
People are like that. Years ago I bought an old BMW for $15k. People thought I was flaunting extreme wealth.
Now if the topic comes up, I tell them it was either this Porsche or a Subaru, and the Porsche was cheaper so it was a no-brainer. (Even with the IMS upgrade work, I spent less.) Invariably the response is

9237: call Jake Raby when any part on your car fails. He once touched a 996, so it's his responsibility to help you.
9361: A loan on a 10+ year old car is a wise financial decision.
742: an early withdrawal from your 401k to replace your motor is an even better financial decision.
1234: Not admitting you made a mistake and that you were a rude jackass to people you wanted to help you even though they had no connection to you or your car, priceless!
9001: cropping back up (and still acting the ***) after a year and thinking this forum won't remember you is just world class awesome.
((whispering)) Good point... I'll try to keep it hush hush. Our little secret ok? ((whispering)) Another secret... Porsches have nice asses, pass it on.
I've learned that Porsche 996 owners are performance enthusiasts.
I've also learned that if you desire higher performance via an LSx heart transplant, that despite the increase in horsepower without adversely affecting handling, it is for some reason considered sacrilege.
Ive also learned that new threads about oil preferences, cell phone storage, and cup holders are always welcome.
Oh yeah, and that photos of naked women included in posts are unfortunately not tolerated. So sad!
I don't think sacrilege explains the attitude. There have been a few really interesting and long threads that walked through the LS conversion. They started with an ambitious owner wanting 400 reliable hp and $50 oil changes. Getting there was an epic journey. 996's have a single brain that controls so many aspects of the car. When the brain doesn't like what it sees it starts flashing lights, turning things off, refusing to start and refusing to respond. Marrying an LS and the brain looks much easier on paper than anyone's execution has been. I know there have been pretty successful engine swaps but I doubt many are as reliable as a stock 996. The engine may have no faults but reliability at the car level is the target.
400 hp, or more, in a 996 would be great. If you have $$ you can get a Jake Raby 4.0 upgrade and get into the ballpark, or you could buy a GT3 or TT. All would be easier to live with than an LS conversion. If you make the swap I will eagerly read your posts about it. If you pay for a conversion, ditto. I like that kind of stuff. By necessity, the swap will make you your own mechanic or dependent on the shop that did the conversion. The way most of posters on the forum get involved is sorting through a problem and we give and get help from the forum. You will be more on your own. If you are looking for posters to tell you that a conversion is a good idea, well you haven't got that yet and probably won't. If you post about a conversion there will be interest.
From a personal perspective, I would love to see someone show up at a concours event with an engine swap. The faces on the judges...
Ditto what ditto said.
I would also add that many seem to look at the LS swap as a cheap alternative to an M96 replacement/rebuild, but it always seems to come out just as expensive as a rebuild when all is said and done.
Right, but if it is done right (and it can be) you end up with a motor that no one is worried about exploding randomly, which is the allure. The cost savings is really the back end peace of mind, in my view.
But people who think it will bolt right up and fire right up for the cost of the LSx and some hoses are delusional and deserve whatever happens to them.
I learned that the DSP unit is slaved to the amp, not the head unit; even if you remove the factory radio, the factory amp needs the DSP unit connected to its cable to function properly.
Thankfully, the
gutted DSP unit
takes almost no room above the passenger footwell.
The one that pops to mind is by user white out and titled something like no imsb worries or something. He ended up selling the car to a guy who made our good friend 1999 whatever butthurt's car look like a leaf hit it. I did not know he died in it.
THere are some great LS build threads; there are not any great LS DIY threads. In addition to White Out's, There was another LS swap started here, but the guy left and went to another forum (Corvette forum, maybe, or LS1Tech) to finish - somebody pissed him off by correcting his "Porsche" pronunciation, so he bailed.
The guy who bought White Out's car died in it - the 996 left the highway and struck a tree. The reminders of what can happen in an instant are sobering.

I think you guys all make valid points about the LSx swap. The tongue-in-cheek "sacrilege" quip was from witnessing the responses from a vocal minority when the guy was doing the swap and detailing it in this forum... prior to deleting his posts. Swaps are always easier on paper, but the good news is that it's not like reinventing the wheel. Between Renegade Hybrids for a hardware source and other individuals that have completed it and thankfully shared online their experiences doing it, it doesn't seem insurmountable. If my 996 ever experiences terminal vomiting in the engine compartment, it's the route that I plan on pursuing. I think a guy could get to ~500hp/tq and be (never) done for approx. 15k for the conversion. But having said that, I typically go over budget on fun projects. The low-end torque is what in my opinion makes the conversion more preferable to me over a warmed over 996 mill.
Holy smokes! Had to make helluva high-speed hit to crumble a car like that... so sad. My best friend was (stupid alert) *running* from police in a heavily modified Mustang GT and sailed through a three way and into a very large oak tree. He slammed the brakes and realized he was done, he laid down in the seat to embrace impact. He was cut out of the car and lived believe it or not. The trooper later told him, that he called it in as a fatality. That ended his high speed days.
^^^^ Yeah, I have seen plenty of pix of crashed 996's, but never one that mangled. Guess the LS really did give it a massive power boost.
Anyway, although the LS is a fantastic motor, and is available for a great price, something intangible bugs me about putting one in a 996. I know a guy with one in a 944... now that's a stokin' mod!
EDIT: Ooops... Forgot to number my post. Lost track. 17?
Holy **** Schnell. You got a background on the story? Was it just simple speeding and lost control?
Edit, googled it and found it:

Here is ...the driving video.

Torque is nice no doubt. But when the guy in the 700hp Bumblebee Camaro that you passed in the advance group comes up to you afterward to ask "what you've got in that thing", it's also nice to see the look on his face when you tell him 245rwhp flat 6.
Don't kid yourself there Slakker, that look is because he is still incredulous that they wouldn't put him in the fastest run group and you were holding him back.
As per B3's question, does the V8 affect weight, center of gravity, oversteer, etc... I like the thought if mine pukes the engine just wouldn't want a straight line brick!
I agree, I wouldn't want LS V8 motor in a Porsche as much as I wouldn't want a air cooled Flat6 engine in a Corvette.
Could you imagine your winning football team giving up it's star running back to play for the other side during the big game?
The two are rivals, let's keep it that way.
I don't assume anything until I have all the facts, that's why I ask and research the topic.
Which specific "LS" motor are you referencing? Aren't the LS type V8 motors pushing 500 lbs or more dressed out?
A fully dressed out M96/01 is about 419lb manual and 395lbs Auto
Can't promise that. heheehe
A properly-done LS swap weighs nominally more than the motor it replaces. The V8 package fits in the 996 engine bay, and a small-block V8 isn't necessarily taller than the M96 depending on how the intake and exhaust are treated.
If you want a belt-driven blower sitting on top of a foot-tall aluminum stack, you may have some fitment issues.
Take a look at the depth of a gen-4 Corvette engine bay - you'll be amazed at how shallow the entire engine package is.
If it would be smog-legal and I could do it PROPERLY (i.e. no canned foam and no 2x4 engine mounts), I would not hesitate for a minute to drop a crate small-block LS/LT engine into my 996. The C4 996 is a rock solid platform; it would be a blast to have an additional 100HP and 100 lb-ft of torque from a slow-spinning, bulletproof V8.
The c/g upset from switching motors would be less than the upset of having an adult passenger sitting in the passenger seat...I don't see people spinning their 996's into ditches because the wife or buddy came along for the drive...
If you're asking if it would be different - probably; I suspect nominally.
If you're asking if it would be an OMG FIERY DEATH big deal, no, I don't think so. If the issue is lateral grip, install a half-inch-wider wheel/tire package and move on.
Would that be a 200 lb woman...??? I see all kinds of gravity issues there...
I like the idea of dropping an LS motor in my 996 - but the thought of trying to get that past CA smog...!!!!!!!! Not to mention it's a 20k swap!
I'm with Mr 5chn3ll! If/when mine dies from one of the to numerous to count failure modes, I'm going to seriously look at having this done. Neb. doesn't have smog rules...for the time being. Speaking of that how do all the California Hot Rodders get by the test, especially with different engines than stock? "$20k"!? That would be less than a Flat6 or RND replacement with installation! I know it would be an abomination to many in the P-car world, but more HP, torque and better sleep. What's not to like?
It's getting harder and harder to grease the system. Folks with dedicated show/track cars now register then PNO (planned non-operation); they're not legal to drive on public roads.
There may be a time when a numbers-matching 996 will be worth a pile of money; today, a 996 with a pushrod V8 sounds awfully tempting but it's just not a California reality. Nebraska just climbed way up my list of places to consider moving...I'd love to drop a LSX376-B8 (ready for boost crate race motor; 500HP N/A or 900HP and 900lb-ft @ 5,500RPM ProCharged) or similar crate motor into my '96 Corvette, but the smog ***** will never let that fly as long as I'm registering it here.
It is a shame, CA DMV allows home built cars such as the Factory Five kit car to be registered in CA using certain forms. wonder if there is a way. I would have no issue going with LS3 conversion.
The last time I checked, registering a specialty built car like a Factory 5 involved acquiring a California SB100 exemption. The DMV issues 500 of these per year. If you don't get one, you wait until next year.
Fact 1: There are way more than 500 California DMV employees, meaning that your chances of getting an employee who has never actually done an SB100 exemption - or even HEARD of it - is pretty good.
Fact 2: Registering a specialty car involves visits to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Highway Patrol (to verify that the car is not stolen and to assign the new VIN), the Bureau of Automotive Repair (they do a smog inspection and then declare the car smog exempt. Let that one work on your brain for a while), a certified shop to perform the light and brake inspection.
Buying a kit car that was previously registered in another state in no way guarantees that the car will be able to be registered in California.
California used to be the epicenter of car culture in America; the DMV and CARB have pretty much exterminated it here.
IF you can get away with it, doing a conversion (like a Smythe) and keeping the car registered as the donor car is the best way to avoid spending a significant part of your life at the DMV, but if you get pulled over in a Smythe Ute conversion - with a VIN and license plate belonging to a Jetta - you may find yourself looking at a grumpy Officer O'Friendly (or, if he's especially suspicious, the loud end of his service piece) as he tries to wrap his head around why your pickup has the credentials of a Volkswagen with a salvage title.
Wow! That all sux! Cali used to be the street rodder paradise. Rat Rods, Woodies, T-buckets, George Barris, etc...I remember reading all of that stuff in Hot Rod magazine when I was a kid even though that was a long time ago. Just assumed it was still that way! Hey, what about all those boy ricer racers we hear about? How can a 9 second Civic pass smog?
BTW you would not like Nebraska especially when you find out your P-car should sit in the garage from mid-Nov. to mid-April because of frozen white stuff on the roads!
There's a 6-year exemption for smogging new cars; you can drop a Duramax into your Civic and be fine until year 7 comes along.
A lot of the tuner/import kids are doing "show, not go" mods, especially now that it's harder to cheat the smog system.
Cars originally registered in 1975 and before are smog exempt - so the rat rods, woodies, street rods, etc. are all covered. What sucks is everything in the middle; that gap between 1975 and less than 7 years old all has to be emissions-legal. Every so often someone will try to pass some less brutal smog legislation, but it gets shot down by the environmentalists who want as all to be driving free-range, gluten-free electric cars with hemp seat covers.
"...shot down by the environmentalists who want as all to be driving free-range, gluten-free electric cars with hemp seat covers."
So...How did they catch the VW Diesel scandal cars? Weren't they less than seven years old?
"...they do a smog inspection and then declare the car smog exempt. Let that one work on your brain for a while."
That comment just soaked in! WHAT! How much does that non-event cost the owner?
Not quite correct. The pre-1975 cars are smog
inspection
exempt, not smog exempt.
All
cars are required to have all of their original smog equipment and it must be properly functioning. So, a '74 914 that has been converted to carbs is illegal. But, since the state gestapo do not require smog inspections for pre-1975 cars, they prolly ain't gonna find out.
They didn't which makes it all the more infuriating that *** clowns on the opposite side of the country are making my life miserable.
It was some University students that figured it out.
Again, if it pre-'75, there won't be any challenges because no inspection is required. But, let's say one of your buddies writes to the Air Resources Board and notifies them that he removed the smog pump, put in a huge motor, etc., and gives them his name and address. Well, he better also buy himself a tube of KY... he's going to need it.
Oh: Post #873.
No way would I spend $150k (minimum) for a Corvette! Mid-engine/front-engine/side-engine/no-engine! I know people who own Corvettes because "it's the only car that scares me..." however many admit "the car is a piece of ----". Last one I had was a smog-controlled 1981 with less hp than my 911 so I have no current first hand knowledge. Much more tasty cars out there for $150k!
"Which specific "LS" motor are you referencing? Aren't the LS type V8 motors pushing 500 lbs or more dressed out?
A fully dressed out M96/01 is about 419lb manual and 395lbs Auto"
B3: The Chevy website advertise the LS3 at 403#'s. Not sure if this is turn-key or bare long block or a marketing/advertising number!
I don't want to go too far down the purist rabbit hole. We would all be walking if we were really the purists some claim to be. "Horses are for sissies!"
Right, Cuda was just being pedantic (sorry, Mike.
)
While it's technically TRUE that you should operate your 1975 and older car with its emission systems intact, there is no inspection to verify its presence and no tailpipe sniffer to ensure it's working. Unless you're blowing so much smoke that a "concerned citizen" reports your license plate as a gross polluter, you can do whatever you want.
pedantic
adjective pedantic \pi-ˈdan-tik\
Popularity: Top 1% of lookups
Definition of pedantic
1: of, relating to, or being a pedant(see pedant)
2: narrowly, stodgily, and often ostentatiously learned
3: unimaginative, dull
Also: overscrupulous, scrupulous, precise, exact, perfectionist, punctilious, meticulous, fussy, fastidious, finicky.
You know, like the kind of guy who would correct you for stating that your 1975 Camaro isn't smog-exempt and point out that it is not technically exempt, but exempt from being examined.
By the way, have I complimented you on your dictionary skills? They seem rather phat, perhaps to the extent of being mad. L33t? Who can say?

In the world of Porsche, Lobsters have forks. Or is it they have claws that hold forks? Or, is it that Porsche Lobsters don't have claws at all, but are born with forks?
The Porsche 996 was a radical car that saved Porsche and was the last 911 that Dr. Ferry Porsche witness to go into production. This image with Pinky Lai (996 designer) was one of the last for Ferry Porsche. It's my understanding that he died shortly after the image was taken.
Guilty as charged! Cut me a deal.
Actually, he died upon turning around and seeing the headlights. It was tragic.
Oh, sh*t! He designed the hats and T-shirts? That's cool info.
Ouch "It started the success story and really rescued Porsche" (re: 996 being his favorite).
Anyone want to go post that in the 993 and 997 forums for some giggles?
ahahaha... yea, I noticed that immediately. Look at the tow hole covered with some sort of cheap sticker. And it looks like the bumper had some unfinished repair to it. I'm not sure if that 996TT was a prototype or a working model.
Here's the first clay model painted.
And moderators really hate the "go into full denial and raging defensiveness when you have been called on your azzhat behavior", foil.
Not surprisingly this often leads to suicide by mod. Also not surprisingly, mods don't care.
Keep the personal attacks to yourself and all will be fine............ pedantic????????? fine, pedantic jackwagon??????????? vacation in your future.
As to differences of opinion on the subject???........... guess how much THAT matters???????
The Porsche's special blinker fluid is derived from extremely rare unicorns as shown in this highly secretive video just recently uncovered by Wikileaks:
I've learned that modern technology is a fragile pact with the devil. Simple is better than complicated. Friend of mine has been waiting for a dealer to get him a test drive in a new 911 but with manual trans. The dealer has been unable to provide him with one. It's been about two months now. Read a report on the new Ford Focus RS...complete with 4 programmed driving modes, including "drifting." The whole thing sounds like a condom over a French tickler.
Noobies to Rennlist are usually not aware that Google is their friend and how to find answers to FAQ like...
1. What type of oil should I use in the 996?
2. Why does my coolant look brown colored?
3. I just bought a 996 and the engine is making a loud ticking sound, should I be concerned?
4. I just bought a 996 from a local used car dealership, and started to drive it home and heard a loud boom sound. It won't start and I'm getting all the lights showing. I'm stuck at an intersection. Help!
5. Just changed my oil for the first time and I noticed lots of metal and plastic parts. Maybe I should use a different filter next time? Why would there be plastic in my filter?
6. I left my convertible top down and a storm flooded my car. It won't start and the alarm goes off. I'm currently hand-cuffed in the back of a police car. Help!
7. Was about to install a new radio and bought some new Craftsman wire clippers from Sears. I started clipping all those cute colorful wires and couldn't stop! Clip, clip, clip... it felt so good. But now the car is silent. Doesn't do anything. Can someone help? I think I may have clipped the wrong wiring harness
8. I just filled up my tank with some powerful 87 octane from Walmart, but the car is smoking like a freight train. I think my oil separator is going bad and so I ordered one from China. Can someone help me through the steps to replace?
9. I want to put some 20 inch Panamera wheels on my car. Will they work on the 996?
10. IMS failure - is this a serious problem, really?
Or you can move south and drive it all year around! ha!
Actually, you're selling it and so... you'll still sleep at night knowing it's someone else problem now, right?
p.s. You'll miss it like crazy!
This site has been invaluable to me...and costly, in that I've proactively addressed issues I wouldn't have without all of the hype/input found here.
I hope this is appropriate. Renntech.org is also a very valuable site and is in need of financial support to keep going. Renntech isn't the social site that Rennlist is, but they do have a tremendous amount of useful technical information. If you can contribute, please do.
the 996 is a relatively small car, when they're painted silver it can be
very difficult to be seen
if my car is a little dirty, it just blends into the asphalt
parking lots require heightened awareness, Yukons at Target just don't see
911's
forget the idea of ever 'stopping in' at a Walmart or warehouse club
the first dent I ever got on a luxury car was at a Costco, cart just traveling 'on it's own'
^^^amen to that man!
Walmart is worst place to park any decent car, but the 911s sit very low which gives the wal-rats a higher probability of damaging your car. I get so frustrated driving the car on interstate expressways... trucks are always changing lane without seeing me.
This conclusion is ... false. Having driven a vehicle with the same mirror setup (and overall length) as a semi trailer, there is no difference in the ability to see a 911 as there is a Camry or really even a midsize SUV.
If trucks keep cutting you off you either are driving too fast for the conditions and you think you are getting cut off or you live in that one magical place where everyone says they live but no one does -- that place where the drivers are worse than everywhere else.
Have you ever rode with a woman that likes to drive and fumble around with a cell phone? They're everywhere these days and they mostly drive big SUVs. They swiftly change lanes and in my experience, about plow all over me in those Suburbans and Expeditions. I wasn't speaking of semi trucks, but of course, I didn't clarify either. I did however, work at a truck stop during my college years and one of the most consistent things I heard was how smaller cars would hover in their trucker's blind spot. Most of the truckers were good guys, but grumpy and short on patiences with the little dogs nippin' at their rear wheels. I listened to many stories of how they would change lanes and then hear a blast of horns in sudden panic.
And...
Who says I drive too fast for conditions and how did YOU know I went to Disney huh?
Yes, gray foam hitting you in the face causes bad thoughts like metal bits in the filter, cracked heads, bore scoring, IMS failure, ISIS, Global Warming, apocalypse, etc.
Well, I joined RL when I bought the car, so kind of counts. But I learned that LA Porsche (and probably other exotic car owners) drive slow because our roads are sh*tty and you feel it exponentially more than in your typical Honda Camry crossover.
According to reliable statistics, 82% of "women" on the Internet have at least two **********.
*This can vary significantly by site. For example, 99.21% of "women" on Pinterest are actually women; conversely, the MMORPG community hovers at just less than 1% for "women" players who are actually female and not desperate (in every possible interpretation) guys trying to score an enchanted axe for their dual-wield tank or a polished Mithril toque.
Oh. And 100% of RL statistics are patently unreliable.

Changing topics....
One thing I've noticed in my 2+ years here is that lots of newbies act like these M96 cars are as valuable as the 47 or so Porsche 356 cars that were made in Gmnd. But history and the dreaded poor reputation of the motor have caused these cars to continue to depreciate. In fact, I've seen two 996 high mileage Carreras for $10,000 in the past week. It's obvious that the poor rep of the M96 motor has turned out to be a good thing for people that desire the 911 driving experience at the price of a used Honda. Still funny to see the new owners talk about how their car is going to be priceless one day. Yea, like in a 1000 years when it's discovered in a barn somewhere? ha!
That is strange. I'm not sure how that happened but I have fixed it now.
What I have learned is how to write sentences without apostrophes when using the garbage talk app.
Yea, I end up getting frustrated with the mobile app and just go use our desktop. Easier to type and navigate.
Does you app jump around at different positions in the thread? It does for me.... so frustrating.
Wait...They aren't priceless!!?? I can't sell mine now after four years of ownership, retire on the profits and move to Grand Cayman!!?? I feel so betrayed. Sounds like a class action lawsuit against Porsche to me. Thanks you have ruined my entire Holidays!
IMSB!
Since joining Rennlist I've learned to listen to members who encourage driving and enjoying our 996's and don't obsess about IMSB. Thank you to those members! /exthree
Overall a great forum , I've learned that it's much more Concervative in terms of modifications than most car forums ( ls conversions aside)
a few times I've asked about a few things like fitting 997 turbo frount brakes for example and 5 guys jumped in saying it wasn't necessary and no none offered anything constructive . Suspension mods are equally Concervative .
But if fitting a cold air intake , cup holder or fabspeed exhaust there are hundreds of helpful posts .
