I would try to replace the ignition switch as JTT says.
Leading evidence: 'Replace ignition switch as jtt says' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Does the light need to be reset by electronic means?

Found this but it doesn't say anything about how to reset the light.

I manually deployed and reset both roll bars and it did not help.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all, my roll over protection warning light came on today. What does this mean; they have not deployed?
i had an mot recently and put the hard top back on too.
any ideas of what I can try?
You should probably read your owners manual. I would guess that there is some way the car knows the hard top is on, and the extendable assemblies for roll over protection are turned off. Probably some microswitch and pin somewhere, or something like that. Are you sure you have the hard top on correctly and tight? Could always remove the hard top and see if the light goes out.
Thought I'd ask again.
Has anyone had their pop-up roll-over protection light come on - when they haven't popped up?
I have now removed the hard top and the light is still on.
I have an MOT coming up soon, so may have to deal with this.
Does the light need to be reset by electronic means?
How can I release them (without breaking my wrist) and reset them in place again - to see of that helps?
Thanks in advance
Found this but it doesn't say anything about how to reset the light. Maybe pop them up and push down to see if they reset. Someone else mentioned - putting the bars back down takes abut 2 minutes. Stick a rod down to hold the latch open, and push them back down till they latch in.

I don't know if this applies to a 996 or 997..might be the same procedure if they don't just push back down - The rollover bars need to be pushed back down into their housings. To do so you need to look down into the housing. You will see of the rollover bar shaft towards the middle of the car there is a lever that needs to be pryed out of the way to allow the bars to retract. You can do this using a long flat head screwdriver or a long pic would work also.
It "may" have nothing to do with actual roll bars. Mine came on when my ignition switch was on it's way out. That damn switch sets off all kinds of bizarre events.
I tried the following with no success:
I removed the fabrid covers and push down
I popped up the bars, and pushed them down again
Light is still on.

- I strongly agree with your comment about safety - the bars come up with one hell of a force - it is quite shocking.
btw, what is that nice red allen key on a stick located behind the back seat for - pic attached?
Anyway, any other ideas welcome...
I would try to replace the ignition switch as JTT says. I've read about so many seemingly unrelated gremlins being banished by replacing that thing. Even if it doesn't fit the issue it's an inexpensive mistake and it will go bad eventually anyway.
Thanks for all the advice chaps.
Being an electronics engineer, I'd like to know how the ignition switch can cause this problem before I change it.
Is it not reliably supplying power to some module somewhere - in which case I should be able to measure it/monitor it/bypass it to check it really is that.
Or is the ignition switch more than just a switch?
I'll have a search around the forum.
This morning the rollover light came on (02 996) and the rollbars appeared in their typical undeployed position. After reading this thread and realizing that theres maybe a trigger switch issue, I pushed down hard on the rollbars to make sure a bump in the road didnt trigger the switch. Sure enough, even though it didnt seem to move, the light went off. Problem solved.
Good morning, I have the same issue in my 996 cab and was wondering if you ever found a solution? I manually deployed and reset both roll bars and it did not help. Thanks!!
Hi Cory, No I have not.
Since my last post I bought a scanner which includes the roll-over module and it gives me a number of errors.
I have seen some posts which traced a fault to corrosion of the contacts in a connector in the footwell, but I haven't gone there.
I'll post the codes later in case they mean anything to anyone.
My roll-over module faults read as:
ID 3 - refer to manual (supply voltage?)
ID 213 - refer to manual (control module?)
ID 1 - indicator light (because I have removed it?)
If anyone knows how to diagnose the above, then please let me know.
thanks for sharing these. I did purchase a new control module so Ill be installing that when it arrives. Did you go to that extent? I found one on eBay.
Cory
Not yet. Can you share the ebay link please - so I can see what it looks like / costs?
Mine is a 1999 C4. What is yours?
Do you have a scanner, or do you just have the dash light on to go by?
I'm having issue with mine too. Just started troubleshooting it. I think its probably electrical. I found this....going to start working it through using this.
