I've already found and replaced a handful of broken items in the house via prints from this thing.
Leading evidence: 'Replace handful of broken items in the house via prints' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace handful of broken items in the house via prints' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I do use Fusion 360 for some things, but mostly I use Tinkercad, which is a free web-based application.

Once you're running the printer constantly, Bambu is just better IMO.

When I bought my first printer a couple of weeks ago, I was looking for things to test print and came across one for $7.00.

Depending on the size of a project, I sometimes split the design into multiple pieces and then combine them using glue, or screws and threaded inserts.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just bought an Elegoo Centauri Carbon 3D printer. I have a couple of early Creality printers that have served me well over the last 5 years. This Elegoo printer is amazing. It can print virtually any filament from ABS to Carbon Fiber and is super fast. The $300 price is unbelievable. Any other printer in its class will be at least $1200. The ability to print these other filaments is a game changer. You can literally make strong, heat resistant parts for your car. It's pretty much ready to go straight out of the box. My previous printers were more or less kits for hobbyists that required a lot of assembly and configuration. If you've been thinking about dipping your toes in the 3D printing world, this is your best bet.
The printer is the final tool. Do you have recommendations for a newb with regards to
- software needed to learn design
- libraries for parts
- is a 3D scanner a good idea, nice to have, or a must to replicate parts
etc
I know not much about 3D printing
While I dont simply because of time, a good friend of mine uses Fusion 360 for software. He does have a scanner but its pretty expensive, so Id say it would be dependent on how often youd think youd be using it.
I've worked in design a long time, so use lots of different software.
Fusion is great, inventor, even tinkercad are all good and useful.
Cults3d.com or thingiverse for parts, or search for "porsche stl" and see what pops up.
3d scanners are fine, but they dont replicate the part for you. They only create a facsimilie and you have to basically model over the mesh to get the engineering tolerances you need.
I had one, and have access to big industrial types but more often than not you can just model something while only knowing a few key features.
Learn how to model things, understand the engineering required. It all takes time, patience and experience.
I've used an old Ender3 for prototyping and then you can print versions of things quickly before maybe outsourcing the final prints if needed.
Fusion 360 is great but if you're new to CAD you will quickly get frustrated and give up. The learning curve is very steep. I do use Fusion 360 for some things, but mostly I use Tinkercad, which is a free web-based application. There are many great YouTube tutorials to get you started. Also, Thingiverse.com and other similar sites have many downloadable projects that you can print without doing any design. I've posted a few 996-related files there.
Thanks for this. I've been struggling to get ABS to print well on an old Anycubic machine. To be fair, I didn't know what to look for when I bought it. This will be a nice upgrade.

What is the build plate size for the above mentioned printer? Im guessing it would print say a cabriolet latch cover without any problem. That would be a nice application as they are expensive from the dealer in some of the less common colors. Thanks
256 X 256 X 256 mm, so about 10 x 10 x 10 inches. Depending on the size of a project, I sometimes split the design into multiple pieces and then combine them using glue, or screws and threaded inserts. Modelling the Cab latch cover would be challenging if you're new to CAD, but could be done.
following up here as I'm having an absolute blast printing stuff on this Centauri Carbon. I've already found and replaced a handful of broken items in the house via prints from this thing. It just works!
A 3D printer has been on my radar for a few years and after first considering Creality 2 years ago and then Bambu Labs last year, I pulled the trigger on this Elegoo unit yesterday.
I'm not sure what to make of the shipping from Elegoo though. I received an email from them this morning saying it was shipped with a USPS tracking number. A couple of hours later, I got another email saying it had been shipped but this time with a UPS tracking number. And right before making this post, I got a
third
email saying it had been shipped and this time with a FedEx tracking #.
At any rate, it's either coming from Chino, Cerritos or ??? in a couple of days.
Elegoo longevity seems to be hit or miss - like buying a cheap M96 Carrera, you either get a fantastic printer or a perpetual project. I'd consider the low entry price as exactly that, an introduction while you decide if you want to go full-bore into this hobby or just leave it as an occasional thing.
Once you're running the printer constantly, Bambu is just better IMO. I have four Bambu P1S doing my stuff; you can swap in a hardened steel nozzle to print carbon fiber and other abrasive filaments so that's the CC's real direct competitor.
Printer came in, was finally able to open the box. It would not complete the first self-check. It came down to the base plate not moving properly. Found a few solutions online, which was a bit daunting until I also found Elegoo's videos on how to reset the base plate and level, whcih included removing the bottom cover, etc. End of day, I was able to print my first Eiffel Tower BUT one of the self-checks resulted in a scratched printing plate. Thankfully, no issues with the nozzle.
That's a bummer.
I fired mine up this morning and it did everything it was supposed to. I printed two of the files that come with the unit as a test. One was the bin that fastens to the 'poop chute' and the other was the brackets that hold the glass lid to the side of the unit.
These modern printers are so different from the early ones. They print right out of the box. The original ones were more like a kit and you had to have a degree in alchemy and wizardry to get them to print well.
Chiming in since I use it for printing replacement parts. I own a Bambu X1C and a H2D. Love their ecosystem and point and shoot features. I'm also printing licensed trinkets at my shop.

I agree. I have a Bambu p1S. Had one minor issue and their customer service was absolutely fantastic. While they could've just sent me a new internal camera, they just swapped out the whole printer. I have 320 hours on the new one and have not had a single issue. Their customer service, engineering and build quality is second to none. That's why companies like Creality (junk. do not ever buy from them) and Elegoo keep coping from Bambulab. I expect nothing less from former DJI engineers....
If you can point me to a part number or shoot me a spare it should be easy to recreate. Harder to figure out how I should host the file without using a janky GDrive or 3rd-party site.
When I bought my first printer a couple of weeks ago, I was looking for things to test print and came across one for $7.00. I already have the part so I didn't buy it, but here's a link:
