Fortunately, my ECU and Immobilizer checked out so no additional repair work needed than the optional RoW and Stage 1.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

25 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I guess I have to buy one with the chip in it then get it programmed? The new basic key unlocks the door, turns on the ignition but not the engine.Paid $40 to have the key made after buying the basic key. Thanks,

A Porsche dealer needs to program a key to your car. It will be expensive. The new key I got from the dealer was just under $900.

Got to be some way around that one!! I don't even have a Porsche dealer nearby. Thanks,

POST 4Original post

You could buy yourself a key fob and find a generous Indy locksmith that will give you a steep discount.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 20213229

The way around it is take the chip you have now that works and glue it inside the steering column. Then any cut key will work.

POST 6Original post

OP do you have one working key fob ? I assume you do . If that is the case you have a few options . 1.Purchase a 2nd key fob from Porsche and have a dealer program it to your car . This is big bucks . 2.As already mentioned take the " pill " chip out of your one working fob and glue it somewhere near the ignition switch . Now any simple key cut correctly can start the car . 3.Find a locksmith/indy shop that can program a key . There are some out there . Should be less $$$ going Indy vs dealer . Only you can determine if full key fob capability is wanted vs a simple key to mechanically lock/unlock the car .

POST 7Original post

If you are handy and can lay the car up for a week , remove the immobilizer from under the seat and send it and the keys to Specialized ECU in Florida.

This is what I did to get an extra key made. Bonus is that I'm getting a RoW tune and Stage 1 while it's there (requires sending in the ECU as well).

POST 10Original post

If I remember correctly, they quoted me about $400 for a new cut key, FOB and programming for around $400. You may want to contact them to get an accurate quote. The website also has a lot of good info about their services based on your specific car.

POST 11Original post

U can save money with ecudoctors by getting the valey key. Also last year they had either a black fri or christmas sale for a bogo key deal if u want to wait.

POST 12Original post

OP, do you not still have the old key head with the working pill in it to swap into the new key head? Thats all I had to do to get the new remote functions programmed at the dealer

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 20213501

I was literally just looking into this today on their site because my key fob is defective. Then I saw the tune and started thinking ...

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 20214786

They turn it around pretty fast also. I sent mine in last week and should be getting it back tomorrow. Fortunately, my ECU and Immobilizer checked out so no additional repair work needed than the optional RoW and Stage 1. I got the RoW because I'm getting P0410 and P1411 (with a CEL) and did not feel like tearing into the vacuum system (and my 2000 is now exempt for emissions testing in GA).

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I could just remove the chip out and tape it to my new key. I don/t want to lose the ability to lock unlock the door with the key.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20214003

I just want a spare key that works fully. Not needing to change the key.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 20217928

still going to need a rfid pill and have it programmed to the car, but having the blade cut and head already is half the way there

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 20217928

Just in case you don't know... The 3 very different and separate parts of the working key fob are: 1)The cut blade 2)The 'pill', inside key fob about the size of a large grain of rice, Pill allows starting engine. 3) The circuit board that operates the remote functions. Pill is kind of hiding in fob, google it to see where its located. Both the pill and circuit board must be coded to match. Pill to the ignition start circuit & fob circuit board coded to immobilizer. Many that just want a spare key without the expensive remote fob functions, but want a key that can start the car and lock/unlock it manually,,, remove the pill from one of the old keys and glue it to the inside of ignition key cover plate. This allows any key blade that fits to start the car. No pill in key fob is needed or circuit board needed. Pills seem to never go bad and always hold their coding. Unlike the troublesome low life fob circuit boards that go bad on a regular basis... The pill glued into the back of the plastic ign key lock cover plate is a hack that PT3 taught us

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20218028

If I have this right the pill needs to be close to the ignition switch. If I place the original key with the chip in it next to the switch my new key without the chip should work? I only have one key with a chip i dont want to lose the ability to unlock the ,door & hoods remotely.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 20220747

Pill has nothing to do with remote functions, only allows engine to start. Fob with a good circuit board that worked before will continue to work all remote functions without pill inside fob. 'Pill' inside a 996 key is a glass-encased transponder chip, also known as an RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) pill . RFID pill is a component of the car's anti-theft immobilizer system. It does not contain a battery and is powered by electromagnetic induction.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I probably need see pictures of it before I start going into the key.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 20221311

I had my key apart while I was trying to debug the FOB. You can see the pill in the bottom left of the side of the key that has the blade in it. Looks exactly like a pill.

POST 23Original post

Early pills can be cloned with the right gear! Later ones can't. Contentious issue on here for some reason, but you'll have to research how/ who to do it.

POST 24Original post

The RFID pill is there for security. It's a go / no go immobilizer. You can't even get the information from Porsche. I have not heard of anyone that has cracked duplicating an RFID pill from Porsche. Walk very carefully if someone says they can do it. It's that way for a reason, and one I agree with.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 20221814

As I said, contentious! You can either copy an early one or not, you don't need to walk carefully at all! If you are paying for it then don't part with your money if/till it works! Early pills (97-98) are very simple, later not so much. Research it yourself though, or do Skips trick of sticking the pill to the ignition and don't worry about it.
