So it worked for me, as I said tho when I first installed the only LCD that lit up was the milage I had to drive the car at least 10 or 12 miles before the others came back on, here is a pic of the one I swapped in

I did a replacement on my 2001 a few years ago for same reason, my car had color matched gray faces and it bubbled up and actually moved and covered the little lights for the gear indicator on my tip, bought a real nice used 2001 tip cluster to replace it.

What I did is split both clusters, the original that was in the car and the used one I bought that had the nice guage faces, I used the back part with the LCD displays from the original and the front half from the used one that had the good guage faces in this way I was able to use the cluster I bought used without losing the original mileage so now I have black gauge faces instead of that old gray messed up color matched one I never really liked anyway

I know the mileage will be different but it will buy me time to repair the original .

Stories of misaligned gauges and broken needles have put me off from replacing the decals, and I want to maintain the original mileage so I haven’t done a full cluster swap.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 1999 996 C4 and the gauge face decals are a mess . I have new decals to replace . I purchased a gauge cluster a few years ago that is in pristine condition as a spare . If I remember correctly it was from a 2000 model . I am aware that the connectors on the cluster have to be the same color as what I am removing .
Let's assume that everything is same same . Is this just plug and play ? Or is coding needed ? Or a handover ? I know the mileage will be different but it will buy me time to repair the original . Or if I mistakenly damage the original I can still drive the car . I will record old/new mileage . Thoughts ?
I did a similar swap last year. You need to make sure the VINs are similar (not necessarily exact), as they can affect some of the major options (e.g., cabrio vs Cpe, C4 vs C2, Manual vs auto tranny, etc.)
I did a replacement on my 2001 a few years ago for same reason, my car had color matched gray faces and it bubbled up and actually moved and covered the little lights for the gear indicator on my tip, bought a real nice used 2001 tip cluster to replace it. what I found is that the cluster is a 2 part deal, there is part that has all the digital stuff and LCD screens and a part that has the analog gauges and they can be separated, they plug into each other. What I did was to seperat the digital part from my original cluster and pluged it into the analog part of the used cluster with the gauge faces and all. When I first installed it in the car the only part of the digital stuff lit up was the milage and it retained the original milage I had only to drive about 10 or 12 miles and the rest of the LCDs lit up and all has been well since then. Don't know if 99 and 2000 are compatible so no guarantee you'll have same experience
Yes, the top picture wich I believe you talking about has the LCD displays and most of the electronics this is the back part of the cluster after its been split in 2. The second picture is the front part wich holds the analog gauges such as the Tac, oil pres, fuel level etc.
Follow up for clarification . In the first picture is the green motherboard with the three white/black LED modules . Did you swap the motherboard and modules ? Or just the modules ? What holds the modules onto the motherboard ? Any other tips ? Thanks
Ok . So you split both gauge clusters . Then you swapped the halves is that correct ? And the halves you swapped is the item on the right in your Pic correct ?
The one on the right you want to use is the one that is original to the car, the one on the left should be the one with the analog gauge faces that you want to swap in, so you would be combining to halves of the 2 different instrument clusters together, there are two tabs on the back of the unit that have to be slid twards the each end I believe they are blue in color and then there is another tab at the bottom of the unit that also needs to be released and the two halfs can then be separated
Very interesting! My 2002 4s has the same issue with the gray color matched dials — bubbling and offset. Stories of misaligned gauges and broken needles have put me off from replacing the decals, and I want to maintain the original mileage so I haven’t done a full cluster swap.
if the 996.2 gauge can also be split in two such that the original digital components (with original mileage) can be retained, it will be a great option. Has anyone tried that on a 996.2?
So it worked for me, as I said tho when I first installed the only LCD that lit up was the milage I had to drive the car at least 10 or 12 miles before the others came back on, here is a pic of the one I swapped in
