Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I could pretty easily connect at the master cylinder and run lines into the vehicle, but it seems like post ABS would be preferred.
Leading evidence: 'Run lines into the vehicle' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run lines into the vehicle' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I'm new to rally (after decades road racing) so this is an inexpensive intro to the sport using a car that has been kicking around the workshop forever.

Suggestion
Otherwise, with a single cylinder handbrake, I think itd be better to use the rear line at the master cylinder.

Suggestion
If you use a single cylinder handbrake and tap into the lines after the ABS pump, youd have to tee both the rear lines into the handbrake and tee them back to their respective calipers.

I'm looking at using a single cylinder hydro handbrake that is also collecting dust on the shelf.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm repurposing my old 99 996 into a mild tarmac/dirt rally competitor. I'm new to rally (after decades road racing) so this is an inexpensive intro to the sport using a car that has been kicking around the workshop forever.
Any suggestions on where to tap into the rear brake circuit for the addition of a rally handbrake? I could pretty easily connect at the master cylinder and run lines into the vehicle, but it seems like post ABS would be preferred.
Any thoughts? Anyone done something similar.
The lines at the ABS pump are easily accessible after removing the trim pieces in the trunk. You could also intercept the lines beneath the car and drill some holes in the body to pass them through, too.
What kind of handbrake do you plan to use? If you use a single cylinder handbrake and tap into the lines after the ABS pump, youd have to tee both the rear lines into the handbrake and tee them back to their respective calipers. This combo would cause some unintended behavior when the ABS kicks in.
There exists hydraulic handbrakes with dual master cylinders that would be a better fit for tapping aft of the ABS pump. Otherwise, with a single cylinder handbrake, I think itd be better to use the rear line at the master cylinder.
Good luck with your build. It sounds like fun!
Thanks!
I'm looking at using a single cylinder hydro handbrake that is also collecting dust on the shelf. Plumbing into the rear braking circuit at the master cylinder looks remarkably easy.
I'm assuming after the proportioning valve for the rear circuit?
Unless I'm mistaken I don't see a factory proportioning valve in the 996 brake setup. Bias is governed by piston sizes.
On a 99 if you don't have traction control it should be dead easy to add a prop valve and a single-MC hydro handbrake, just bring the hardline into the cabin and make the flares.
