Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I am in the middle of moving my radio to the 3rd slot (hands cut and bloody). It keeps hitting tabs or something and will not go all the way in. Can anyone explain which pieces to grind down?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nevermind. I got it. Had to remove the center console to figure it out. Here are the results: I didn't realize the the dual cup holder was for gen1 and not gen2. Need to figure out how to cover old cup holder...

POST 3Original post

Normal procedure is to keep the radio in the upper slot below the cup holder option. Then, move the shelf directly above the AC control unit. It looks great either way!

I couldn't see the radio or climate control when the original cup holder had something in it. One of the original built in holders broke so I figured I'd get the new style and move things around.

Nice work! Been thinking of moving the radio down to the 3 slot as well. What did you have to modify? Was it extensive cutting? Also, the cubby below your cup holders...do you have the part number for that? Or does this one also fit in slot 2 like you did? https://cai-store.com/products/996-lower-console-cubby

POST 11Original post

Here is mine. It was already moved when i bought to car. I had to modify a trim piece to go around the hvac control but that wasnt that hard and everything is easy to reach.

You will need these 2 parts: 996-552-253-01-01C => Shelf. ($71.00) This one does not have the rounded corners like the one in the bottom, which is where mine was. 996-552-339-00-01C => Trim ($7.50). This climate control trim fits the bottom located controls perfectly. The 2 cup holder kit I got from Pelican: 000-044-801-91-OEM => Cup holder ($84.00). This was made for a gen 1 car. I had to modify the support brackets so that it fit my gen 2. As far as moving the radio to slot 3, it's a PIA if you have big hands (you know what they say about big hands .... big gloves). It is easiest to remove the entire lower console. 4 torx screws and it comes out easily. You will have to grind down 2 tabs on the top of the 3rd slot. I used a hand file. With the console / slots out, it is easy to see what you have to do. I ran the climate control wiring through the larger / lower gromet and the reach was good. I ran the radio connections through the smaller opening above the large grometed opening for maximum reach. I found that it is better to put the radio in the slot and connect the wires with the bottom console out (and slightly twisted), so you can see what you are doing. Maneuver the console back into place once all is reconnected.

Thanks! Do you know what the 2 tabs are used for? Right now I have the CD holder in there (useless) but I also want to be able to put the car back to stock. Are the tabs used to keep the CD holder at the right depth level? Just want to know the impact of grinding those away.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I couldn't see their purpose, except for maybe some structural aspect. But even at that, there will be ZERO impact by grinding the tabs off. You are taking maybe 1/16" of plastic off.

POST 15Original post

Any one ever move the radio to slot 1 and the HVAC to 2? That possible?

How did you mount the climate control in the 3rd bin? Is there a kit of did you have to gin something up?

POST 17Original post

I went with a double din in top 2 slots, AC controls and tray in bottom 2 slots. Loved it.

POST 19Original post

+1 ,, I'd like the double din head in the top 2, and the Climate in 3 and keep the pocket in the bottom. I know I saw the parts somewhere..
