Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Oil has been changed regularly during recent ownership, no records from early ownership.
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check bores' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Unless the oil was changed every year, I'd be concerned.

Any idea on expected cost and time to check the bores?

Up to $24K depending on condition, in particular, the accident severity and quality of the paint and repair work.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2001 C2 Cab, 38k miles, good condition throughout. Not many service records early in life, pretty extensive recent service including plugs, coils, LN dual row, RMS. Minor accident early in life, with a repaint of front fender and bumper cover (verified withpaint meter). Options are pretty limited, leather seats, psm, not much else. No hardtop. Selling through a reputable dealer.
what would you pay?
My scans of Porsche sales data indicates only minor differences in price between 1999, 2000, and 2001 Carreras Cabs...most are mid to high teens. Mileage and mntce. history are major price factors.

$22,583. Plus for the IMS and RMS, minus for the body work, plus for the low miles(market, not me), minus for the missing hardtop. But - the hardtop can be found on ebay, or CL unless a unique color. Check the bores, write the check.
Any idea on expected cost and time to check the bores? I have it going into the shop Friday for the PPI. I want to make sure the shop is prepared to do the borescope.
$16 - $22K depending on PPI/negotiations... FWIW - Super low miles on these cars is NOT a plus! You have to remember that 38k miles on a 20 year old car could equate to as little as 1500mi a year, but more likely more in some years and less in others. In fact, there's a good chance that the car sat for long periods of time with no use. This is one of the worst things for these engines. Early on, the recommendation for oil changes was 15k miles... at that rate, there's a chance that such a car could have realistically had the same oil in it for close to half it's life
The dealer missed bringing the car in for the PPI this morning. Doh!
The good news is I got to talk to the shop for a little bit. 8 of the 9 cars they had in the shop were Porsches (the 9th was a Noble M12!). 5 of them were set up as race cars. Within five minutes of talking to the shop owner he brought up bore scoring, cracked heads, water pump replacement, etc. These guys know their Porsches. I think i picked a good shop.
2 hours labor. Full oil service add 30 min. Will need the pan flange goop. May want to change to the LN no-bypass filter adapter. It uses a larger volume filter as well.
We need to know how close we are in the ultimate price. No holding out, this isn't the NFL.
Oh, sorry. $23k before IMS service. The dealer offered to do it but I may have the PPI shop do it instead. They seemed to really know their stuff. The dealer does have experience doing the IMS service but certainly not as much as the dedicated Porsche indy.
Not a fan of convertible cars, but high teens maybe with low mileage. Low mileage is nice on its face, although some people think that is not good for mechanical system longevity. On any 996, I like to assume I'm going to spend a couple grand immediately to get it up to service levels. I like the $5k rule of thumb: expect/budget to spend that after buying the car and you won't be surprised by those expenses. If you don't need to spend it, then awesome. Just be prepared for it to avoid surprises.
Whether or not low mileage is better mechanically, it definitively has a major impact on resale value. I'd expect to pay under $20k with 80k miles but I don't think you could find something with 30k miles for much less than $23k. This is via a reputable dealer, as well, perhaps in a PP sale if you did a lot of looking around. There's a 41k mile on CL about 3hr from me asking $25k. Maybe could talk him down to $23k.
These are the sub-40k miles 996 NBs that have been on BaT in the last few months. After the 5% buyers fee, none went for less than $26,250. With IMS done, the cheapest was $29,400.

BaT tends to bring inflated prices but there are a lot of variables for these cars. My 99 was 18.5k with 50k miles but no IMSB, I would have expected a little more with it.
I agree BAT is inflated, although nothing I've seen in my search comes close to 20, let alone 18.5, with 50k miles. The prices are up a bit recently, too. Even earlier this year the prices seem like they were lower based on the trend on BAT.
Here's a '99 with 52k on BaT ending Monday. We'll see where the market is at for your car.

Why did I think it had the IMSB done? Hmmmm,,, well that's a little high, I hope all the rest of the car was top notch. If it pushes all your buttons and the IMS service goes well I guess it's a long time keeper.
I like to watch the prices on Cargurus, you can see all the price adjustment and the time taken to sell. Auctions and dealer pricing are inflated and inaccurate for real world values...
