Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

One example of what this leads to: I've removed, cleaned, applied anti-seize to, and reinstalled every bolt & nut in my exhaust system.
Leading evidence: 'Clean applied anti-seize' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'easiest car i've ever done oil changes' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean applied anti-seize' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I changed my engine mounts because I couldn't imagine paying someone $200 (after I buy the parts) for essentially taking off two nuts.
Replace engine mounts in 25-30 minutes and charged me $60

Beyond that, it's probably the easiest car I've ever done oil changes on.

he did suggest bleeding/re-fill of the brake lines and i concurred.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im not a DIY guy:
First oil change. Porsche Indy did it for $120, mobil 1 0w-40, filter, drain plug seal. Collected sample for UOA for me too. Another $40 for new cabin air filter. Flushed brakes for another $140 since we had no idea how long it had been. 1st class customer service as well.
At these prices, especially without a proper home garage, Ill continue to not be a DIY guy.
These cars seem fairly DIY but that doesn't mean you have to. I am happy doing my own routine maintenance and saving a few bucks. At the same time if the car is already in the shop and needs something small I will just have them do it.
To each his own. Personally i dont trust anyone to do as quality of a job as i can do. One of the reasons i have a garage with a lift is because of all the money i have saved over the years. Good u found a good indy.
Im not a DIY guy either. No shame in it. I have a good Indy not far away and make enough at my day job to outsource. I would find doing routine stuff frustrating
Yeah, the shop made basically nothing on those services. Part of doing the work yourself is knowing it was done right. When skill work on expensive machinery is super cheap it kinda makes you wonder who has their hands on your car.
that's fine with me. drop the car off after hours, pick it up after hours. i asked if the motor mounts needed replacing and was more than willing to have them done, tech said they didnt need replacing yet. he did suggest bleeding/re-fill of the brake lines and i concurred. this indy has a great reputation within the PCA community and previously fixed my window regulator and horn issues. it's basically a 2 man operation so i know who has their hands on my car as well.
Mobil1 0W40 Walmart is $23x2=$46 plus $10 Mahle filter. The current Mobil 1 rebate offer is $12 per 5QT up to 4 per household (promotion ends at the end of September). So my DIY oil change is
$32
total
after rebate, maybe $36 with tax. Beyond that, it's probably the easiest car I've ever done oil changes on. There are things worth paying an indy for, but to me 996/997 oil changes just aren't one of them.
No criticism is intended. To each his own. I've owned Porsches now for over 10 years. For me, if I was paying a shop to do everything I could not afford to own Porsches, not only on what shops charge for labor, but markups on parts is just so much more than what they can be ordered for. Luckily at least the 928 and 996 are pretty DIY friendly and the forum provides a wealth of information on keeping them running.
I can't blame for supporting your local indy on simple maintenance. Being a regular patron and supporting him for small jobs will pay off when something more serious fails on the car. Kind of like your Doctor knowing your family's medical history.
Same here, in my youth when Speedy oil change shops began, I thought that was a great thing & took my cars regularly. Once I learned more about modern oil I would bring my own oil.
Since I gave some thought to the whole concept of a "speedy" oil change it makes you wonder how much of the old oil is able to drain out when they have cars waiting.
I do my own oil changes because its fun. Its an hour out of my day where I'm thinking about one thing and not 10. I changed my engine mounts because I couldn't imagine paying someone $200 (after I buy the parts) for essentially taking off two nuts.
Will I ever drop the engine, or do the clutch myself? Probably not. I don't really have the time, tools or know-how. I do what I can to keep the maintenance costs low and to get as familiar with the car as I can.
This is important. Every job you do yourself exposes you to other aspects of your car. You get to watch what's happening, where dirt is accumulating, if leaks are starting, etc. etc. You find small items that call for attention, and you feel better when they're attended to. A friend of mine calls it "bonding with your car".
One example of what this leads to: I've removed, cleaned, applied anti-seize to, and reinstalled every bolt & nut in my exhaust system.
I am the ultimate DIY. Have collected special tools over the years, bought a lift, and have never looked back. I have not been to a mechanic in 25 years. I dropped over 100 engines and rebuilt gearboxes in my time from Ferrari to Porsches. The trick is to never let it scare you. It's a car.
Having said that, it is not for everybody so I understand if you need to find an honest mechanic...
I agree.. some tasks I do myself, others I let my Indy do. He swapped my engine mounts in 25-30 minutes and charged me $60. Same thing with my fuel filter. I'm happy to give him my business for certain tasks.
I just had my AC system evacuated and re-charged, pressure tested etc. (something I just couldn't do on my own) Well worth it at $300. Now I have a brand new AC compressor for sale (which I bought but didn't need - I bought it because I thought I needed a clutch)... If anyone is interested PM me...
