Most cars that we service have at least a 1/2 quart deep sump, so you still end up with the same total system volume, even running the oil just above the min.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I changed engine oil and the oil level indicated the full bar over max and I got white smoke in the morning at cold engine condition and also got some kind of exhaust smell while driving.
So, I drained about 200-400ml and the oil level now indicated one bar below of max. No more the white smoke and smell.
Is it normal that the M96 engine is so sensitive with oil capacity?
It's just about 300ml overfilling.
In a word yes! Oil level is best if in the center of the electronic gauge (3 bars under max, 3 bars over min)... Over filling is worse for the motor than running a little low on the meter/dipstick. 3 bars is only 4-6oz of oil...almost nothing when you consider there are 9.25 qts of oil in there...
I was told the best oil level would be on the max level of the bar. Because of the IMSB in case of failure of the bearing seal.
Have I misunderstood it?
Did you remove the seal from your IMSB? If not, there is essentially zero exchange of oil inside the bearing.
Definitely run the oil level below the full mark. If you track it, the ideal is running it at the half mark with a deep sump installed.
We typically set the cars that leave our shop one notch above min when the cars have been sitting overnight on a flat surface. Most cars that we service have at least a 1/2 quart deep sump, so you still end up with the same total system volume, even running the oil just above the min. That helps reduce windage inside the engine (these are not dry sump) and there is oil and oil mist being slung around the inside of the engine. As far as the IMS is concerned, if there is no seal on the bearing, you have chains whipping and throwing oil around as well as the discharge oil from the main bearing sitting directly above that all provide lubrication to the IMS.
We've seen customers create their own oil consumption and AOS issues by overfilling, so we wrote a directive on setting the oil level properly:
https://lnengineering.com/education/...n-and-911.html
It is not uncommon for the AOS to puke oil into the intake if overfilled, however if the AOS is old, it might be a good idea to do a manometer test to verify the AOS is not failing or failed.
Hi Charles,
It's been10 years since I ordered the almost full set of my old 996.1 engine components from you.
Is your .5 deep sump solution like Porsche Oil Sump Baffle (
https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin...0GT3%2529%2509
) ?
I appreciate your help.
Thanks for the feedback. This is the first time I remember hearing "one notch above minimum" on this forum. I use my 1999 3.4 (stock) primarily as at track day car at Road Atlanta. I installed the LN Engineering 2 quart deep sump and run the oil at the half mark (cold). I have the spin on oil filter installed. I use Joe Gibbs XP9. It holds about 11.5 quarts at the half mark.
Road Atlanta Turn 12 is a long sweeping right hander that you can run almost flat out. If I have oil starvation issues, it would probably be there. The car has run great with no oil pressure issues.
Our two quart deep sump includes an X51-style baffle designed to work with the sump extension properly. The half quart sump kit is designed to work with the stock baffle, however we do offer a modified version of the X51 baffle that will indeed work, but it comes separately.
I've just seen this article and they recommended "
There are a few things you can do to protect against oil starvation problems. Firstly, be sure that your oil level is always at the high-level mark of your dipstick."
https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...a_Problems.htm
So, It makes me confused about between mid-level and high-level of the oil for stock 996s.
There are two forces at work. To prevent oil starvation, running at Max level would be ideal. To prevent overwhelming the AOS, you want to keep the oil level as low as possible, within the acceptable range. My solution was to install the two quart deep sump to get the extra volume and run at a lower level in the dipstick. Since I track my car, you also have to factor in oil foaming which would lead you to maximize volume.
The car hold 9+ quarts, a half low is safer than 1/8 over..
Its holding 2 more quarts than a 500HP wet sump corvette..
I thin it will be fine,,
BTW the dash display is the high level monitor, always
use the dipstick as the final check.
