Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm having the frost plugs replaced with threaded plugs.
Leading evidence: 'Replace with threaded plugs' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace with threaded plugs' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Sealant is necessary, yes, but something like Curil T is what should be used instead of silicone.

Suggestion
It more a question of the installer using too much sealant but I suppose the material can also be problematic - I would stick to Porsche or FSI/LNE recommendations GLWS!
Use real gaskets we never have a problem (head gaskets)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 3.4 996 engine that has crank damage. I have salvaged 5 pistons and Carillo rods that are currently listed here. I have a set of 'AT' cases with steel dry sleeve inserts. Number 6 is damaged but both LN and EBS saw pictures and said the cases were workable cores. I should also have the fresh (3000 mile) heads available. I'm having the frost plugs replaced with threaded plugs. Valves, guides are new less than 3000 miles ago. I'll have alternator, starter, clutch flywheel, intake (e-throttle) as well. I'll be getting pictures of all and posting in the classifieds over the next few days. All prices are negotiable. Just looking to move on and get rid of parts and roller.
It did happen on track on an outlap. Could just as easily happened on the street. Number 6 journal must have been blocked with a piece if silicone. No oil and the rod, bearing and crank burned beyond blue to black.
The cases and other parts had silicone seals not what you should use. Doesnt take much to plug up the works.
Unfortunately, the M96 mostly uses sealant between case parts (I assume this was a cost saving measure). Where they use real gaskets we never have a problem (head gaskets). It more a question of the installer using too much sealant but I suppose the material can also be problematic - I would stick to Porsche or FSI/LNE recommendations GLWS!
Sealant is necessary, yes, but something like Curil T is what should be used instead of silicone. There was evidence of over application as little strings of silicone were peeled off the inside and outside of mating surfaces. It's too bad as the build quality was actually very good. The cylinders were resleeved in steel to prevent cylinder failure, the heads are really nicely rebuilt as well. I'm having the frost plugs replaced with threaded plugs and will have those available soon.
