Suggestion

The Conti radios have so much potential, but without a clean way to send a audio signal to a frunk amp, most 996 owners will just purchase units from Alpine, Blaupunkt, Pioneer, and others that have been providing pre-amp outputs for more than 30 years.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay, I'll soon be the proud owner of what is apparently the "finest example of a 996" I'll ever find. That being said, it has an after market stereo system (which is the way the current owner bought it) and he doesn't have the original. When I looked up the VIN and option codes, I discovered it came with a CDR-220. That's easy enough to find for $150 to $200, and a very simple install. However, I've contemplated getting the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System (despite the price), but I'm not certain if it will fit in the 996. Porsche's website notes it fits in pretty much everything up to the 993. However, the site also says it fits in "Porsche cars with a DIN-1 slot." I'm fairly certain the 996 has DIN-1 slots (though I could be wrong). Does anyone know if the Classic Radio Navigation System will fit and work in the 996?

POST 2Original post

Wow, very cool. Looks like it's just a single DIN setup. I'm sure it will work on the 996.

POST 3Original post

The basic OEM radio is single DIN, so it's just a matter of getting the correct cubbies. That being said, I really don't see the point of that radio. Seems like the screen is just too small to be of any real use.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13923577

Oh yeah, it's pointless but I still like it! I have a contact, so I can pick one up for about $1000 instead of the $1250 it normally is (which is still a lot), but I still haven't decided if I really want to do that. I also realized I attached the wrong photo earlier, not sure if that was a prototype shot, render or what, but here's what it actually looks like:

POST 5Original post

IMO, just looking at the locks for the radio to lock into the dash, is not going to work. no slots at the bottom.

POST 6Original post

You may want to do some double checking. Everything I've read from Porsche says it won't fit the 986/996.

POST 7Original post

What system does your 996 have? Door subs? Frunk amp???

POST 8Original post

What year do you have? It does not work with the fiber optic system in the >2003 996.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 13923731

slots on the bottom? If it is in fact a single DIN radio, it should fit physically. Looking at the wiring diagram, other than no MOST connection for 03/04 amp and CD changer, it looks like plug and play

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 13924373

the radio will fit physically, just won't be able to lock it in the panel.

POST 11Original post

I've got an Alpine single DIN in my car, and it looks (and sounds okay). I still think it would be super cool to dump the HU and just have a cable (under the center armrest) to go directly from my phone to an amp. Then I could just have a cubby under the HVAC. Super clean look, especially with my center console delete.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 13924512

IIRC, the guides and locks are on the side, not the bottom

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 13924179, 13924278, 13924618

I haven't got the car yet, it;ll be shipped from Georgia, I'll probably get it about the third week of February. However, according to option codes, it originally had the CDR-220 and "Basic Sound System" It's a 2001, so I should be good there. So, it should work on the 996 and properly lock in? Here's what's in the car now (so you can see why I want to replace it): And it appears there an Alpine amp up front, maybe? I would be interested it taking all that out. I don't listen to a lot of music in the car as I'd rather hear the car. But, it's nice to have when I want to hear music. I don't need a fancy, loud sound system. Stock is fine with me. I just hope I can take that amp out without causing any damage. The radar detector is something else to contend with, I don't like the placement of it or really, much of the center console. I'll be doing some rearranging.

POST 14Original post

Hopefully the person that put in the aftermarket radio did not destroy the factory harness and used an adapter harness, otherwise you will need to find a harness and wire it in

POST 15Original post

Yep, dude you may be in a world of hurt trying to sort out what's been cut and re-wired for the system. On the bright side, it looks like that's an old Passport SR1 custom installed radar detection system which could mean the stereo was also professionally installed. As Jay mentioned, if they cut the original harness, then it's going to be a lot of work going back to a Porsche/Becker radio like the CDR-220 or new Porsche Nav Classic.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13924800

Good observationsthe stereo was at least professionally installed, like the radar detector, so I'm hoping it's not destroyed back there. It shouldn't be, but, you never know until you see it. I also just spoke with the current owner, the red things are crossovers, the silver thing is a CD changer, and the there are amps as well. I intend on having all that professionally removed when I get the car. I had to do that with my Boxster as well. I loathe aftermarket audio equipment.

POST 17Original post

One of the European car mags, I don't remember which one, did a test of the Classic Radio and put it in a bunch of Porsches including a non-MOST, 996 and it worked fine. I have the same setup with the token cup holders and the Classic Radio is on my list for Santa.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 13924829

Yea, I feel ya... most of the aftermarket stuff looks spaceshipish. Why they like to make the units looks like something off a sci-fi flick is beyond me. You have a lot of options, but you need to think it through before paying big bucks to have a professional rip everything out and start over. Few things to think about... 1. Single DIN or Double DIN? 2. Factory re-install (e.g. Becker/Porsche CDR-220) or Aftermarket stock look 3. Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music and phone? 4. Factory 10 speaker setup with frunk amp and subs in the door? 5. Backup camera? etc. etc. etc

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13924852

I couldn't agree more! It's not a low-budget sci-fi film, this a great car with great design!! The only think I'm uncertain is whether or not I want to shell out for the Porsche Classic Nav System, or just pick up a Becker CDR-220. I'm much more concerned with a clean, factory look than anything else.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 13924888

Any chance the original owner has the factory CDR-220 that he's willing to give you? Personally, if the original factory look is what you desire, then reinstall what came with the car. Personally, I think the CDR-220 are better radio that the successor (CDR-23). I have both and thought about putting the CDR-220 back in the car, but I love the bluetooth streaming audio of my Blaupunkt and so I'm sticking with it.

POST 21Original post

Another alternative that would be plug and play Bluetooth, USB, CD, etc Porsche factory look Under $300 http://www.continental-automotive.co...18UB_OR_en.pdf

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 13925061

The only concern about the Continental unit, is that is doesn't show a pre-amp line-level output on the C connector like the CDR-220 has. This would be a problem if his car uses a frunk amp to drives the subs.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 13925105

Could always drive it with the speaker outs In my case, I don't have an amp, so speaker out is perfect and adds Bluetooth and USB

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 13925124

Absolutely, if the car has the base system (8 speaker/4-channel) setup, then the Conti will work fine. It has a nice layout. I wonder how the sound quality is?

POST 25Original post

The Porsche Classic looks very cool. Honestly the price, while it gives me pause, isn't the deal breaker for me. I have the MOST setup and this doesn't look like it will integrate with third party amps, even assuming I want to rip and replace the bose amp with something aftermarket. In your case, since you're considering ripping out the Alpine anyway, assuming you can get it to fit it might work well for you. Another option that could work for both of us would be the Becker Mexico Retro... But the price on that one very much is a deal breaker for me. But if your pockets are deep enough, that would likely work if you fed it into your existing Alpine, it also has speaker outs so it would work if you decided to rip out the alpine, and it would work for me if I wired up an adapter to feed it to my MOST amp.

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 13924936, 13925814, 13925176

No, the current owner bought the car with this already in it, and he never got the original stereo. A CDR-220 is easy enough to find for $150 to $200, and I could easily get a cable that allows iPod/iPhone connection and/or bluetooth if I want. By far, that's the most cost effective solution. I don't really like using my phone as navigation. When I do that, I then have to find a place to mount the phone which means some weird crap attached to some awkward place on my dashboard or console, or suction cup sticking in my window (which the state of California will not allow if placed in the center). Additionally, it looks cluttered and messy, and I don't want my car to look that way. According to the option codes: 490 Basic sound system My biggest fear is that the installer of the stereo might have cut up the wires. I'm hoping that's not the case, but I won't know until I take delivery.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 13925977

That's where I'm at too. So I'll probably end saying to hell with it and go double din, get something with Apple Carplay. The Sony unit actually even looks decent to me, but I wish it had an actual GPS in it as well. For what it's worth, if you do go the aftermarket double-din route you already have your hvac controls relocated, you'd just need to get the double din trim bezel and you'd have to ditch your cupholders.

POST 31Original post

Just get this and move on to the next item on your list (no affiliation).

POST 32Original post

That does look to be a good price

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13926562

Not a bad price, but, I don't have any other items on the list, this is literally it!

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 13926562

Bad advice. The CR-220 is really old and if you push that button (arc arrow) about the right ****, it will flip down the front display to reveal, hold onto your seat, a cassette player. hahaha Does that tell you how old it is? You need the C D R-220 which is the exact unit that came with the car.

POST 35Original post

Or if the CR-220 isn't old school enough for you, check out the CR-210. That came in my car, plus the ever so useful cassette holder! And the hi-fi system. 75% of the center stack space devoted to a worthless audio system! Oh, and a CD-changer and amp in the frunk. All that stuff is in a box in the garage now. Not sure if it's worth hanging on to those parts or not.

POST 36Original post

^^That's a relic! I love the cassette holder! hahaha

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13927268

Nice! I still have the CR-210 from my Boxster. However, this is what it looks like right now:

POST 38Original post

That looks great! I've done almost the same thing. Please excuse the colors in this pic, my phone cannot handle all those shades of red and pink! Also, I've added new black floor mats since I took this photo.

POST 39Original post

Looks good Chris... I'll be tackling the console delete soon as well. I need to relocate the HVAC up to where the cupholders currently are (will be purging those!). but I also have the multi-CD load accessory, and have no idea where I'm going to move that.

POST 40Original post

Get the Porsche classic. If your car is in great shape its an excellent addition. I love having a great drivers car with added not overdone modern amenities. That radio will probably holds its value and if you ever sell your car you can sell the radio separately and recoup most of your money. If you buy it post pics of it installed!

POST 41Original post

One thing I really like about Blaupunkt aside for the value and audio performance, is the design is less spaceshipish. The matte black look and *real* buttons match the look and feel of the 996's center dash area nicely. Here's my setup. My car came stock with the 10 speaker/6-chan "Hi-Fi" setup. Which means there are bass enclosures in the doors.

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 13929654

I like that. I have the same concern about getting rid of my PCM. I don't want anything too modern looking - it really clashes with the 996 interior. Any details on your deck? Link? Thanks!

POST 44Original post

I think B3freak has the best setup. I liked it so much I copied....I have the MOST system in my 2004 AE so I also ordered one of the converters for the fiber connection input. I appreciate the simple or as-close-to-factory as possible. The reviews on the receiver are pretty decent to!

Here the links... Crutchfield has dropped the price even more which may mean they are about to discontinue the unit. I started out with a single DIN Blaupunkt, but I explored the reviews on the New Jersey and made the decision to upgrade. It has a much better tuner and more EQ controls... also supports 6-channel amps. Anyway, here are the links: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_023NJ2...tp=72406&avf=N and, I also changed out my amp.... They discontinued the exact model I purchase, but here's the closest one... https://www.crutchfield.com/p_023GTA....html?tp=70135

POST 48Original post

First thing I did was add an AUX port on my PCM1!

POST 49Original post

^^Smart man! Wish you could do that on the PCM2, but since it's MOST, well thats another story. ha!

POST 50Original post

Quotes source post: 13930866

Thank you! I am going to order. Since I have an MK1 car w/o most (and I don't have an amp either) I think it should be a pretty straight forward swap, no? Strange that Crutchfield can't sell me a harness for the car either. Also, I assume no dash kit is required since it's a straight swap DIN to DIN?

POST 51Original post

I should probably start my own thread, but what about something like this? https://www.crutchfield.com/p_109GTR....html?tp=70135 I could stream music directly to the amp via bluetooth, and then not even have to worry about having a HU at all. Just need to hide a charging cable somewhere and it should be all set.

POST 52Original post

Quotes source post: 13930883

Just be mindful of the wiring.... don't get'm crossed (no pun intended)! The wiring harness can be purchased from CAI or you might even find one decent on eBay. Instead of buying double DIN mounting adapter, I used the mounting cage that Blaupunkt included, but I had to modify it to work. You'll have a little bit of a gap above the unit. I modified the old AC bezel for mine and used the stock Blaupunkt bezel. If that concerns you, you might want to buy the bezel/cage from CAI too or buy the cheapo from Metra. Again, the PCM has the full bezel design, but the Blaupunkt will need an adapter or modification. Here's your cheapest option. http://www.ebay.com/itm/182346632147...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT The Suncoast Porsche double DIN adapter/cage bezel is better... http://suncoastparts.com/product/9X6DDIN.html Here's a closer view of mine. Hope that helps!

POST 54Original post

I'm the new owner of a 1999 996 that came with the tape deck and changer in the trunk. Base system otherwise. I'm leaning heavily in this direction since it would give me all the connectivity I need/want and also get rid of the dated looking tape deck unit while still retaining a stock-ish look. It seems to me that all the information that states that the Classic Radio unit won't work with 996s has refer only to the MOST system (which I don't have). Before I pull the trigger, I would love to hear from someone that has installed it or has spoken with someone that has it in their 996 (the photo from the Klassic issue is obviously encouraging--thanks for posting).

Vandalizer, I'm saving up my lunch money for one but since I carry my lunch, it is going to take a while... I cannot post the text from the Porsche Klassik article but I can talk about their findings. They tried the radio in eleven different Porsches including various air-cooled 911 variants, a 914, a 959, a 924, 944, 968 and 928. Finally they tried it in a 996 Turbo with the pre-MOST Bose system. They said that even though the literature said through-993, they felt it would work so they tried it and it worked fine. In fact they really liked it with the Bose system. My take is that the pre-MOST 996 systems were the same as in the early 986s which was the same as in the 993s. No reason it should not just drop right in. The one issue may be, but I just don't know at this point, is the alarm system switch. Since the switch is defeated for any aftermarket stereo anyway, it is essentially a non-issue either way.

POST 56Original post

Thanks, Tharbin. That is helpful. I tried to find the article online but could only find that I could purchase the full edition from Amazon so your summary is very much appreciated. That's encouraging information and probably enough for me to be the guinea pig of the group. I'll let everyone know if I move forward and if so, how it works.

POST 57Original post

Vandalizer, One thing to note. The USB/iPod connector is a dongle block that you have to mount somewhere. They are not just on the front plate of the unit somewhere. It probably looks better that way but thought you should know up front.

POST 58Original post

Thanks. My plan is to mount the block in the to-be-removed cassette holder. The one thing I'm concerned about, and it was raised above, is whether the radio clips into place via the existing clips. I guess I haven't done enough radio installs to know whether the clips on the bottom of the stock radio will line up with the clips on the classic which look like they are in the middle on the side.

POST 59Original post

Welp, I pulled the trigger. It should arrive early next week and I'll have a chance to install it next weekend. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

POST 60Original post

Update. I received the Porsche Classic Radio last week and started installation last night. I pulled out the old tape deck and mounting bracket. I drilled a hole in the bottom storage shelf and mounted the USB/Ipad media connector there. I had to sand down the sides of the radio opening to fit the new mounting bracket in place. It was almost imperceptibly larger than the existing hole. I ran the mic cable with the mic placed on the driver's side A pillar adjacent to the visor. I have to finish routing the mic and media connector wires. I also have to run the GPS antenna wire. This is something I am not at all excited about. The instructions say to place it on the dash in front or parcel shelf in back. Neither of these options appeal to me. Given how little I expect to use the GPS on the PCR (I expect to just use my phone as usual), I may skip it or mount it in the storage shelf. I probably won't get to finishing the install until this weekend but I'll post pictures when I do.

POST 62Original post

Quotes source post: 13995425

I'm sure there are a lot of us that would like to see this. Congratulations and I hope it all works out okay. On the GPS antenna, you may want to search this forum a little. I seem to recall that several guys have mounted their GPS antenna under or on the black windshield cowl trim around the wipers. I know there is a firewall pass-through right near there as well used to hook up the factory amps and cd players to the radios. Just a thought. Also one of the aftermarket audio installers markets a GPS antenna mount but I have no idea if it would fit the Classic Radio's GPS antenna or not. Edit: I may be recalling their XM radio antenna mounts. I just don't remember for sure but I thought it was a very clever solution to an inelegant problem.

POST 63Original post

Hope it works out well for you, but I don't care for the setup. It's located too low and the screen is pretty small, making it not ideal for driving and navigating. I got rid of my CD-R 210 and replaced it with a Kenwood with Bluetooth for hands free calls. It matches the interior really well. I use a small magnet mount to place my iPhone up high and use that for navigation, etc... best of all, the apps such as Waze, Google, etc... get updated automatically without any hassle.

POST 64Original post

I finished up the install last night. It fits perfectly and I think it looks great. The lights on the PCRN can be set to amber, white or green. The amber lights make it look right at home. I'll post pictures tonight of the process and completed look so that you can all make your won conclusions. I wound up running the gps antenna underneath the passenger side of the dash and then up between the a-pillar and dash. There was no cutting or dash removal required. The look of the antenna is not perfect but I don't think I'll notice it much. I will second the feeling that the nav is not functionally all that useful. We'll see how it works in practice but it is low and the screen is obviously small. That said, the screen still looks great and is easy to read. There was only one problem in connecting it. The factory am/fm antenna doesn't reach the input on the new radio. The female connector on the PCRN is inset and the factory connector is at a right angle from the antenna cord. I'll have to look for some sort of adapter. I'm very happy with how it turned out. Despite the steep price, I feel like I now have the best of all worlds: a factory look that is technologically current. Pics to come tonight.

I apparently need to post these over several posts. First the unboxing.

POST 69Original post

Stereo came out easy with $7 keys purchased on Amazon. Factory harness has little slack.

POST 70Original post

Plenty of slack on the new cables. My wife helped run them under the dash and up through the console. The media connector is run into the bottom shelf via a hole I drilled in the back of it. It was later mounted in place with supplied Velcro. Gps antenna mount. No drilling required. Mic before being stuck into place.

POST 71Original post

Competed install of radio. Initial boot up. Media box is mounted in place here.

POST 72Original post

The amber is a closer match in person than this photo shows. I suppose you choose select the white option as well. The green looks cool but doesn't fit obviously.

POST 73Original post

That covers it. I had to type this up three times. This final time was unfortunately the briefest. Apparently I could only load three photos at a time. Hit me up with any questions. The only way I could be happier would be if this thing only cost $600 like it should.

POST 74Original post

Vandalizer, That looks really good. Thanks for the great write up. Now we all know for sure. It fits and it works. Let us know how it sounds and whether the GPS is useful there or not. It looks great, even better than I thought it would. Tom

POST 75Original post

Wow. I'm tempted...but now the HVAC looks awfully dated. Hope you will keep us posted with how you like living with it after some time.

POST 76Original post

Great work Vandi!!! We really appreciate the write up and it's great to know that the PCR unit can be integrated into the 996. Do you know if the unit supports a pre-amp output similar to the CDR-220? This is important for those that have the "HI-FI" option which includes the door subs. Also, for those that don't want to spend the $1200.00 price tag of the Porsche Classic Radio. This is an alternative that has all the functionality of the CDR-220, but adds BlueTooth Streaming Music/Phone support as well as USB input for mp3 playback. One of the best design features is that it has the orange display that matches the LED color of the Porsche dash. But bare in mind, this is not NAV unit (as you can clearly see), but if you want a single-DIN alternative to the CDR series, then this is the one. I'm not 100%, but I believe the unit will also output a pre-amp output (like the CDR-220) to a frunk amp for sub-channel bass. These unit sell for around $300.00

POST 77Original post

I think it while it "looks nice", it's not a very practical unit. The nav screen is way too small and by locating it so far down on the dash, it's not easy to see while you're driving. Nice job on the install though.

POST 78Original post

Looks great! im thinking of buying one also. Has the sound quality improved? How do the bluetooth phone calls sound? Can you stream music via Bluetooth from your phone?

POST 79Original post

I think it sounds good. I've had a number of cars with excellent factory systems. I'm very pleased with how it sounds. I'm sure it could be improved with better speakers but it definitely made a noticeable difference. I've only played music by streaming via Bluetooth so far and it works great. The hvac doesnt look quite as dated in person imo. I'll check on the preamp question as well. I'll definitely keep everyone posted on what it's like to live with it. Unfortunately since it's march in Wisconsin, it may be a few weeks (or months) before I have an update.

POST 80Original post

Quotes source post: 14003346

Agreed. But I bought it strictly for looks, improved sound, and Bluetooth. I don't anticipate much use of the Nav. The maps have to be updated manually (and I think purchased) beyond the initial maps that come with it. You can always swap it with the hvac to mount it higher.

Quotes source post: 14003261

I have been looking that unit as well. The reviews I have seen are very good and has a factory look

POST 82Original post

Jealous of you guys without MOST....so many more options.

POST 83Original post

I wish the unit had RCA outs so it would make it easier to go into an amp. I am considering this unit also.

POST 84Original post

Yea, that would be a perfect replacement if the Conti had simple pre-amp RCA outputs for the frunk amp. Didn't seem like too much to ask from a company that manufactures car sound system.

POST 85Original post

Quotes source post: 14003261

Unfortunately it does not appear that this unit has preamp outs. http://www.continental-automotive.co...16UB_OR_en.pdf Otherwise I'd probably spring for one of these. It looks like it belongs, the price is right, and it has most of the features I'd want.

POST 86Original post

Yea, I was hoping it had the same pre-amp outputs similar to the CDR-220 which are located on socket C1 (top left). It would be great if someone from the Conti group respond to this question.

POST 87Original post

Quotes source post: 14008438

There is a wiring diagram for the conti on page 10 of the PDF I posted.

POST 88Original post

Quotes source post: 14008459

Yea, thanks... I've viewed their pdf wiring diagram before, but they're not clear what the three C sockets support other than the 2 RCA inputs, MIC input, and SWRC ctrl cable. I know that most would say not to assume that the other C sockets are being used, but since this was a direct competitor to the Becker units, it was be fair to say there's a slight possibility that the unit outputs a L+R signal for amps on one of the C1 connectors. It would be nice if Conti had a support line for their radios, but I haven't had any luck getting an answer.

POST 89Original post

Quotes source post: 14008485

So you're going on the assumption that there are unused (or otherwise unlabeled) pins on the connectors? Sounds a bit optimistic to me, the same optimism that keeps me buying lottery tickets. I'd love to be wrong, but no way I'm going to buy one to find out.

Well if you wanted to gamble here's picture of a harness which could be used to hedge your bet: I used this ISO connector to RCA adapter in the "C1" location previously to utilize an aftermarket amp. POST 94Original post

B3, that Kramer-Auto Porsche Classic PCRN (2nd generation) radio looks like a nice alternative for that classic radio look with some upgrades.

POST 95Original post

The Continental head units have the labelled in- and outputs only. There's no line outputs, nor any circuitry inside that could be enable to get this. A line output could easily be done by using a LOC device. (speaker-line level converter) A proper plug-and-play harness for the 996/Boxster will take care of this. Cheers, Tore

POST 96Original post

Quotes source post: 14013792

Speaker-to-line level converters are so 1980s. Sound quality from those converters are so poor. The Conti radios have so much potential, but without a clean way to send a audio signal to a frunk amp, most 996 owners will just purchase units from Alpine, Blaupunkt, Pioneer, and others that have been providing pre-amp outputs for more than 30 years.

POST 97Original post

Kraemer is the maker of the Porsche classic car stereo but they ceased to sell those stereos retail. Currently none available on German or EU ebay either. I have one original Kraemer (KR737) in my 993 back in Germany. OK for the price (400 Euros). Krmer KR-737 is the same unit (with modified firmware) as the classic radio offered by Porsche for 1184 Euro. Continental car stereos (as well as Axion and VDO brands) are made by Kienzle and geared towards commercial vehicles. I have not seen a single DIN radio by Continental with line level outputs. Also, these units offer a hands free Phone connection via BT, but to my knowledge they do not transfer your phone book to the stereo. Basic BT music streaming is provided, but not always reliable in my experience with intermittent drop outs. Kienzle MCR 1016 has 4 line level outputs but it's style might be objectionable to Porsche style patrol. http://www.hifitest.de/test/naviceiv...mer-kr-737_423 (In German, very positive review). I have the 412UB (no CD) installed in my other car in Germany. The fit and finish are great, installation a breeze. Please remember that this unit does not have a line level (pre amp) output to use with an external amp. ... The internal amp struggles with loads < 4 Ohms and overheats and shuts off."

POST 98Original post

Quotes source post: 14015220

Probably another reason not to use it with the 10 speaker/6 channel sound systems in the 996. Even if you use a low-pass filter for the door speakers, it will overheat since the subs are rated at 2 ohms. uggh. But with base 4 channel Porsche sound systems, the Conti single DIN radios should work just fine. Unfortunately, most of the Mk2 996 cars have the HiFi and/or Bose systems which are 6-ch systems.

POST 99Original post

b3freK, you are right, 2 ohm or 1 ohm (as in cabs) will kill this radio. It is not very stable at 3-4 ohms either. How about a Becker Mexico Retro Becker Mexico Retro for paltry 2,900 Euros?

POST 100Original post

$3100 USD??? Ouch, pass the Vaseline please! If you're going for a factory single-DIN look, then I think it makes better sense to purchase a used or refurbished CDR-220 which supports 6-chan systems. Those Mexico units look like they should be in a 1955 Chevy or something. Ha!

POST 101Original post

I started to get confused about which radio did what. Just to clarify, the PCRN does work with the factory sound systems. It works directly with the Nokia (most common) and with an adapter the Blaupunkt sound systems. Since Porsche Klassik used it with the non-MOST Bose ststem, it must work there as well. It also has direct out 4x45 for the base systems.

POST 102Original post

Quotes source post: 14015386

I believe you're right. The new Porsche radio will support speaker level at the HU as well as amplification signals on the back. Nokia made many frunk amps for Porsche over the years. Wonder if the connectivity is the same for 996 owners that have Becker amps? This definitely would NOT be for MOST based systems. Still, it's a big price to pay if it doesn't work.

POST 103 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay, I have mine PCRN installed in my 996 and it's absolutely beautiful! However, I have some fairly technical questions about it and I can't seem to find where to get support for this. I'm not having any problems, my questions are largely centered around the SD Card for music, and also maps. Does anyone know where one could find the answers to technical questions for this system? I'll post pics later, I simply haven't had time to take any photos yet!

POST 104Original post

The SD memory slot for music works in the same manner as a USB thumb drive. You save you music in a digital file like mp3, put the memory card in the slot, follow the playback instructions, and wahhh la... you have digital music. The Map memory card I assume is to store the most recent map information similar to the days of PCM1 and PCM2 where the map data was stored on DVD discs.

POST 105Original post

It would be helpful to the Rennlist community if you'd post pictures of the install and your current OEM system. Thank you!

POST 106 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14060052

I'd love to do that but, I can't post pictures of the install as I didn't do it! There was so much after market crap in there (head unit, amp, crossovers, speakers, nav unit), that I didn't want to risk screwing something up. So, I took it in to a stereo shop that specializes in Porsche. Yes, that exists! I will, however, post a before and after picture. I just haven't had a chance to take a shot of the new install yet. Will do that today or tomorrow.

POST 107 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14060050

Yep, I got all that… the questions I have are much more technical. In fact, here they are, just in case anyone knows the answers. In regards to the microSD card for music (NOT the Maps microSD card): 1. Can the microSD card slot accept microSDXC cards, or is it only able to read microSDHC cards? 2. Is there a maximum capacity for the microSD card that the system can read? 3. The microSD card that came with the system for the music side (not maps) is also write protected (locked). Is it safe to unlock this and write files to it? 4. The file format of the microSD card is MS-DOS (FAT32). Does the microSD card have to be that format, or can it be MacOS Extended (aka HFS+)? This makes writing to the card much easier on a Mac, which is what I use (I have no access to a PC). 5. The microSD card that came with the system for the music side (NOT the Maps microSD card) has a “device.nng.” file on it. The .nng file extension is most commonly used by the Pioneer AVIC navigation unit. These files contain the serial number assigned to the associated navigation device. The NNG file is used to synchronize the Pioneer AVIC unit with the Poicon Speedcam service. — is that .nng file needed? 6. If the .nng file is needed, does it need to be transferred to a new card in the event I purchase a new, higher capacity card? 7. How can music be managed on the microSD card and USB drive (or - what’s the file structure needed for reading music off a USB drive or the microSD card)? Can the music files sit in nested folders (Artist/Album/Song), or do they need to be sitting loose on the drive? In regards to the microSD card for Maps: 1. How regularly are the maps updated? Porsche documentation just states “periodically” and TomTom offers no support at all. 2. TomTom generally offers free updates of maps on new devices, does Porsche not offer this (even though it’s using TomTom maps)? 3. If Porsche does not offer free map updates, then I could understand that each year a new map would need to be purchased if you want to stay current. However, TomTom generally releases quarterly updates at no cost. Are these updates not available to PCRN owners?

POST 108Original post

I thought about replacing my CDR-220 with the Porsche classic radio, but when I saw the price and realized that it did not support the HAES amps in the front, I knew it wouldn't work out. Having to convert speaker level output to standard line level pre-amp output is the big problem for me. Continental units have the same draw backs.

When I first saw this radio, I thought this is a got to have item to update a single din radio. After having spent $3g for NAV in my daily driver (no apple play at the time), and now I exclusively use my phone and Waze. I would suggest that this radio will soon look quite dated.
